What Jordan Walsh needs is playing time. He got 36 minutes last night, he might not get that in a month in Boston. He put up 9 threes and he even had possessions where he brought the ball up the floor and played as the pick and roll ball handler. He can stretch the limits of his game in Maine in a way that he simply can't with the main team.
It's not worth jeopardizing his long term development for what is at best a marginal upgrade on the 9th man in the rotation in mid November.

Exactly.
Plus, while the stats Walsh put up are encouraging (and the way he looks out there)..
a) it's just 1 game
b) it's just G league, which is miles below the NBA in terms of competition level
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

That is such a narrative that so many people use..JD has played 30+ min..Begarin keeps playing. Big minutes overseas..neither improves..Walsh plays in the G league all he may learn is how to be the main guy from
that league and won't know how to adjust his role on Boston.. Jordan can probably already contribute to Boston better than Brissett all while learning to FIT in with an NBA team.
We are not talking about a major rotation piece, but rather than ninth or tenth man... Walsh may have games where he makes significant impact or doesn't even play at all.. But just learning and being around Tatum and brown in practice and in games I believe will do more for his game and his confidence Than playing at a much lower level and get a full sense of security... Look how well Luka Samanic has played in the g league last year and he can't make a Dent in the n. B. A.
2 things need to go.. my lack of spell check and Joe..

I didn’t watch the game last night but just looking at the box and some highlights the 4 threes from Walsh is nice. I think they play again tonight (tomorrow maybe?) in Portland. Will probably go and check them out one of their next home games.

So what? Begarin and Davison were both late 2nd round picks. The hit rate on late 2nd round picks making it in the NBA is very low. There's zero evidence to suggest that Begarin or Davison would have developed more if we gave them NBA minutes. Clearly, neither player is ready to play at the NBA level - especially not for a team with championship aspirations. If we had put either player in there, we would have lost games as a result and fans would be going nuts on here, complaining that we are playing these 19 yr old kids who aren't ready, losing games for us and the player would've struggled so badly that their confidence would have been crushed - along with any chance of them ever making it in the league.
Brice Sensabaugh (1st round pick of the Jazz) is developing in the g league. Taylor Hendricks (9th pick over all, by the Jazz) is developing in the g league. Cam Whitmore (20th pick by the Rockets) is developing in the G league.
Leonard Miller just got picked early 2nd round by the Wolves. He's in the G league. The wolves also had both of the guys they drafted last year Wendell Moore (late 1st round pick) and Josh Minott (early 2nd round pick) in the G league for basically all of last season.
Noah Clowney (late 1st round pick by the Nets) is on G league assignment. GG Jackson (early 2nd round pick by the Grizzlies) is playing in the g league now. This is what happens for most rookies - at least most of them who are taken outside of the lottery.
Jaden Springer was a late 1st round pick by the Sixers in 2021. Played g league for 2 yrs and is now contributing for the Sixers off the bench in year 3. Ziaire Williams (10th pick by grizzlies in 2021 draft) spent pretty much all of his first 2 seasons in the g league - now he's a contributor for their big club.
All of these guys started off in the G league:
Rudy Gobert
Khris Middleton
Pascal Siakam
Jordan Clarkson
Terance Mann
Danny Green
Robert Covington
Rafer Alston
Sam Hauser
Jonathan Kuminga
Hassan Whiteside
Kendrick Nunn
Danuel House
Spencer Dinwiddie
Christian Wood
Duncan Robinson
Max Strus
Ish Smith
Seth Curry
Shaun Livingston
Chris Andersen
JJ Barea
Quinn Cook
Gary Payton II
Gabe Vincent
Norman Powell
The G league exists for a reason. One of the main reasons is so young players who aren't ready for the NBA level have a place to develop, get reps, get minutes..
Nikola Jokic was stashed overseas for a year before coming over to the NBA. Ginobili was a draft and stash. You can certainly develop overseas or in the g league and go on to be a contributing NBA player.
playa-hater wrote:Jordan can probably already contribute to Boston better than Brissett
We have no evidence to support that. Brissett is 6 years further along in his development, has 3 years under his belt contributing at the NBA level - compared to 0 for Walsh. Brissett has a few games under his belt contributing for this celtics team in meaningful mins - Walsh has 0.
Training camp was Walsh's chance to prove he is better than Brissett. Not only training camp, but preseason games as well as the 4 weeks or so of workouts that took place before training camp (that both Walsh and Brissett participated in). If Walsh outplayed Brissett in camp, then he'd be getting those minutes that Brissett is getting. Obviously, that didn't happen. But it's ok - there's no rush for Walsh - he's just a 19 yr old rookie. He'll get his chance eventually.
The meaningful mins that Brissett has gotten have mostly been at the 4 for us. Walsh is more of a 3 and it's unknown whether he can play the 4 at the NBA level. Hell, it's unknown if he can play any position at the NBA level. He'll get his chance for NBA mins - just not yet. He's developing in the g league, and meanwhile the Boston squad is winning games. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's no reason to make some bold change right now when everything is going fine.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

Re: Maine Celtics, 2023-24
OK what team is the first to come to mind for successfully developing young players?? Everyone knows it's Miami. In fact they develop NON drafted players better than most develop their draft picks regardless of 1st or 2nd.
Last night, JJJ, who was a pre-draft similar graded player to our own J Walsh, played and started for 38 minutes and 2nd in minutes only to Bam. was 2nd in scoring. They could have started either J Richrdson or K Love. But they didn't. In fact undrafted player Dru Smith is already averaging 19 min while shooting above 48% and 45% from 3 this season.
And No one is asking for J Walsh to even step in and be a starter. Far less pressure than JJJ for sure.. since no one is even asking anything of him outside of 9th or 10th man. Even more so considering Walsh's competition is NOT playing well. Brissett, Svi and Stevens.
I will repeat yet again I believe Walsh would gain so much more being around Tatum - Brown - Jrue - White etc.. with 10 -15 minutes per than getting a false sense of himself playing G-League BB and 30ish min..
EDIT now for Boston' perspective. Having a player like Walsh come in off the bench may have the crowd even more pumped than the others. I feel he would be an instant fan favorite. If he makes just a couple of baseline 3s and learns to play defense like he is capable of, his confidence may just go through the roof.

Some very important differences; Jaime is 3 years older than Walsh and dru smith is about to turn 26. What Walsh needs that these guys have had in previous competition levels is lots and lots of reps. On ball and off ball. Reps he will not get with the Celtics playing 10 min every other game. Even in College Walsh was like a third option. It’s just not comparable. The kid is 19. Furthermore, Miami is doing this out of necessity, not desire.

Last night Butler, Herro and Martin were all out. Let's not take a game with half their rotation out over years and years of data on what they want to do with prospects.
In 2022 the Heat drafted a 19 year old (Jovic) then proceeded to give him just 200 NBA minutes his rookie season.
Duncan Robinson played 161 NBA minutes and 1218 G-League minutes his rookie year.
Gabe Vincent played 83 NBA minutes his rookie season (and that was after a year in the G-League).
Bam freaking Adebayo didn't become a full time starter until his third year.
Miami is pretty much notorious for bringing guys along slower than any other team. You seem to think that they are the example to follow so you should be happy that Boston is doing the same thing and taking their time with Walsh.

I thought that this game was over, when Maine was down by like 30 pts.
Down only 10, going into the 4th.

Clearly this is a philosophical difference of opinion and no one is changing their minds. So no point to go back and forth. But I high-lighted 1 part. Yes Miami may play young players "out of necessity" but they develop and in many cases quite fast and well.

Miami has had half or less than half the draft picks of Boston the last 5 years and all but 1 player you listed was either an undrafted player or 2nd RD pick. Man even Cailb Martin was basically a throw away pickup who no one really wanted.. Now he is a quality role player.
As I said in the post above. No one is changing their opinion. Let's hope Jordan Walsh becomes what many seem to think he can! Peace!!

for the record I have "went bald" and shaved my head around 27.. So.. I developed thick skin in reference to Baldy jokes..
My son calls me and now apparently Jordan Walsh "Mr Clean"

Developing quite fast as you put it is relative. Vincent and Strus didn't become everyday rotation player for the Heat until their third season there (and they were 25 at the time). Robinson also didn't become a rotation guy until he was 25 (although to be fair it was only his second season). Caleb Martin came to the Heat at 26 with 2 years and 1000 minutes of NBA experience. Jordan Walsh is a 19 year old rookie.
You want to believe that Walsh would be better served being on the fringes of the Boston rotation instead of playing in Maine, that's fine. But don't try to defend that position by saying it's what Miami would do when we have years and years of evidence that it's actually the complete opposite of what they do.

Clearly this is a philosophical difference of opinion and no one is changing their minds. So no point to go back and forth. But I high-lighted 1 part. Yes Miami may play young players "out of necessity" but they develop and in many cases quite fast and well.
Carry on Gents..
Really?? undrafted but older Rookie Kendrick Nunn started the season as a starter over previous season's all star guard G Dragic. D Robinson had 1 game started the previous year and almost no NBA game experience when he started the season as a starter over highly touted and promising Rookie Tyler Herro. Gabe Vincent was also thrown into the Mix over former All star Kyle Lowery at ome point. Max Struss barely had any NBA experience when he was thrown into the starting lineup near the start of the season with Miami. Yes they were all older than our Rookie but they all played over many far more Proven NBA players on Miami while having Proved almost nothing on the NBA level. How much NBA experience did Highsmith have last year when he was thrown in the playoffs over Kevin Love at times.
If your argument it was due to "G League experience" and being older than Walsh than so be it.
But I Hate to remind you we did just lose the conference finals to a team with 7 undrafted players who clearly had Less experience than our team as a whole and by a lot.
Experience is fine, but a bit overrated IMO. Just look at how much NBA and playoff experience we had with Tatum Brown Al and Smart vs Miami and how that mattered for nothing. Sometimes you just have to get the young player in there.
Thank God our team didn't have Tatum the 19 year old rookie come off the bench considering we were a playoff team the year before. Kyrie Smart Rozier J Brown Horford and recently signed Gordon Hayward all were there day one with Tatum.
Yes I know Tatum was a talented Lottery pick. But at the same time was thrown right in and responded awesomely. All I ask is give our other talented 19 year old a small but steady role and I believe good things will happen.
Damn the most I have replied in maybe ever... and I want out of this circular debate.
2 things need to go.. my lack of spell check and Joe..
