I find it even more impressive since D White seems to go back and forth as a starter/6th/7man

I don't think White needs to be a great shooter to be a super positive impact for us. I think for him and Smart to play together he does need to keep this up (or close to it).

With the addition of Brogdon and the emergence of Hauser we SHOULDN'T need to rely on that combo playing together in a playoff rotation so honestly it's not really a big deal.

The guard depth on this team is ridiculous. DWhite has been outstanding shooting the ball. Hope he can keep it up.

Average expense for 4 years college is about $250,000. If Derek paid it all off at once this year, he would only have $16.6 million dollars left to spend.

Don't want to Hijack at D White thread, but just looking at this is really is an amazing testament to how great Tatum is.. Boston supposedly is extremely deep and yet you would think the +/- drop-off wouldn't be that major.. Yet it not only is, but it is a ton higher than so many of the other stars in this league. Tatum's shot making and much improved play-making is an obvious answer but so is his on the ball and help defense, which I still say is highly underrated.

as far as D White, how can you not like a former D2 player with such tremendous BB IQ  8-)

He's a less maniacal and less menacing Marcus Smart. I think he's gotten comfortable with his role on the team. I just love how he pushes the ball every chance he gets but rarely forces the issue.

I LOVE Derrick White - his amazing skill set on BOTH ENDS, his hard work, his undrafted ascendancy to the NBA from literally no where, his humbleness, everything about him.
He has been an incredibly important addition to this incredible team - a GREAT **** trade.

And JJ should coach - at least be a shooting coach - he was so pure as a shooter.
My youngest daughter (who was wait listed at Williams [they have not received a **** dime from me since] & at my Med School Duke - who ended up getting a beyond fabulous education at UVA & now is a key member of the Google/You Tube music recruitment team) & I saw him shoot the lights out at Duke numerous times. If not for his back, he would have had an even more successful pro career.

Or do color commentary.

JJ’s intellect & ability to elocute (interjecting occasionally well placed profanity) are remarkable.
As is the case with Brogdon (and Hauser) being 4 year UVA grads, it matters that JJ graduated from Duke.
Duke & UVA aren’t Williams or our just as academically elite rival Amherst, but they are amongst the best universities in the USA.

Ditto for the best shooter in NBA history who graduated from Davidson (‘the Williams of the South’) - WHOSE MOTHER **** ASS WE NEED TO **** KICK ON SATURDAY NIGHT ON ABC - REVENGE GAME TO THE NTH POWER!

That is NOT AT ALL to say that other pro basketball studs who can barely compose 3 word sentences & took basket weaving for 1 year in ‘college’ before being drafted & earning preposterous millions of dollars do not possess innate intelligence & high bball IQs - aside from possessing otherworldly athletic skills.
SamIam 2010: Truth's ability to play so incredibly efficiently is so UNDERAPPRECIATED. Bballcool 2012: Amazing how great Pierce has been for so long. Continues to defy age! KG 2013: P is original Celtic. Wherever he goes, we go. This is The Truth's house.

Hard to deny. His confidence and shooting just has elevated him to another level. Great personality. You could argue he's their third or fourth best player. He's been that good.

Proof that sometimes good things can happen to unheralded, nice guys... And that nice guys can contribute to good things happening -- hopefully #18.

Celtics have won 41 of their 52 games with a point differential of +10.87 since trading for White. 65-win team based on win %. 70-win team based on point differential.

I know this isn't how this stuff works but that's a lot of winning since trade deadline.

Derrick White has to go

Post#479 » by celticfan42487 » Thu Dec 22, 2022 4:58 am

Derrick White, Mr. sunk cost fallacy himself.

The 6'4" drunken college kid's piss version of Marcus Smart.

He has no place in this rotation. And we have no time to waste because championship windows can close in one season's time.

We all know what Derrick White is.

- He can't shoot
- He can't create
- He can barely make simple passes
- Our offensive rating last playoffs was 108 with him on the court, 114 with him off it
- He's too short to play SG with his t-rex arms
- But most importantly too weak to defend people who aren't point guards.

Unless the other team is playing a strong PG like the Celtics do with Smart then he can't even defend PGs and he can be targeted in the playoffs in pick and rolls and put in the weight room by PGs as well as your standard guards you'd expect to do that to him all throughout the playoffs.

Derrick White is the kind of guard you have in your rotation and you're ecstatic about it when you're a treadmilling team, not a winning team. He's the guy when your team barely cracks .500 and it gives your announcers someone to give Tommy Points to and your fans hype up when they know he's really nothing special.

Well guess what... we have Marcus Smart and Brogdon and Jaylen Brown. And **** it, if we want we even have Pritchard... we're a winning team so this asshat needs to go for someone that can help us.

The thing is, in today's NBA unless you happen to have a prime LeBron James or an MVP version of Curry stepping on that court... you can't be the ONLY team in the NBA contending with two starting guards in White and Smart who shoot below the traditional average of 36% from 3.

You could if say... our starting Center was Dirk, or Jokic. But it's Rob, and we have to win a ring. Let's not waste it on a sunk cost fallacy and deal with the reality that is.

So

1) We need TimeLord in our rotation
2) We need Smart starting in our rotation
3) These DPOY players are poor shooters at their position, so give them spacing AND give them size to take advantage of Smart and TimeLord's special defensive presences without neutering it with a "get out of free weakling here" jail card.
3) We can't put players that don't have the size to play switch defense, and the spacing to support our guys in Smart and Timelord in the rotation

So, White has to go.

If you can trade him to the Pistons for Bojan, great!

At this point I'd even go so far as to swap him straight up for Jae Crowder and save the Owners luxury tax as a last resort.

Not that I'd be thrilled about Crowder in the rotation. But he has multiple season of extremely large 3 point attempts at 38% or better, including 2021 in the playoffs.

But stop wasting the size this roster has with a 6'4" weakling who can't shoot, we already have defensive savants in the rotation in Smart and Rob who are poor at their position for shooting... well support them with size and 3 and D so we can play switch everything.

But yes, even as a last resort for a Jae Crowder trade suddenly you have a rotation that can switch everything full of F U defenders that CAN ACTUALLY HIT 3s and have in their entire careers.

Smart/Brogdon
Brown
Tatum
Grant/Jae
TimeLord/Horfie

That's an 8 man playoff rotation with the smallest guy being maybe Brogdon who is a big PG who we watch bully his way to the rim every single game over and over again. Also obviously we have the option to bring shooting off the bench as needed with Pritchard and Hauser there. And Jae is a proven playoff 3 and D performer who needs to perform to get a contract in the offseason.

He was one of the critical cogs of the Oct-Nov Celtics killing machine. He has to go nowhere, and he'll be back to normal soon. I hope you manage to keep the thread going until then.
