Best things I've watched this week...

The Last of Us. Duh.

"Chloe" on Amazon. It's a British drama/suspense/mystery type of thing about a gal who is obsessed with an old friend's social media and puts her on a pedestal, and then she can't believe when the seemingly perfect gal commits suicide. So she fakes a new identity and infiltrates the other gal's life and group of friends in order to get to the bottom of what happened while trying to avoid getting caught in her own complicated lies. I didn't know if it was really going to be my thing but I found it very fascinating and absorbing. High quality.

"Island" on Amazon. It's a Korean fantasy/action/drama series with monsters and martial arts and whatnot. Entertaining.

I haven't gotten into the new season of Mandalorian yet but I'm looking forward to it. New season of Ted Lasso starts this week too. Also Lucky Hank with Bob Odenkirk premiers on AMC soon and season 2 of Yellowjackets on Showtime.

TLOU finale was great and super intense. They really set a new standard for video game adaptions that's going to be tough to beat. Amazing season, though I fear we're going to be waiting until 2025 for season 2.

Agreed. It was fantastic. Love the inclusion of Ashley Johnson in the finale and her surprise role in this whole thing. Only nitpick is that I would've liked a few more clickers, maybe some more FEDRA to add more tension to the story. But that probably would've required more episodes than they were greenlighted by HBO to work with so you do what you can with what you have. And in general, it was sensational.

Something to cheer you up after this putrid loss to the Rockets.

I remember when this song came out. Good times.

And then, almost 30 years later I learned that the song wasn't an original.

From Linda Lyndell's Wikipedia page:
Linda Lyndell (born as Linda Rowland, November 22, 1946) is an American soul singer from Gainesville, Florida.

Lyndell sang in gospel churches as a child; though she was white, she sang in both white and black churches, and eventually began singing with R&B groups as a teenager.[1] In the 1960s she sang as a support act with James Brown and Ike & Tina Turner, and in 1967 Atlanta disc jockey Dave Crawford introduced her to Stax Records producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter. They recorded her first single, "Bring Your Love Back to Me", in December 1967 and released it on Volt Records, but the song did not become a hit. In 1968 she did a second session, cutting the tune "What a Man"; this song reached No. 50 on the Billboard R&B charts.[2] In response to the release of her single, she received threats from white supremacist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, and retired from performance soon after.[1][3] She remained out of music and lived in Gainesville for the next 25 years. Linda recorded songs at Fuller Studios in Tampa, Florida, in the sixties with Gene Middleton and the Soul Survivors.

In 1993, rap group Salt-n-Pepa sampled "What a Man" for their hit single "Whatta Man", which was a massive hit. In the wake of the single's success, Lyndell began performing again, and in 2003, at the opening of the Stax Museum, she performed "What a Man" live for the first time ever.

I finally got into Succession last night (HBO). I kept hearing how good it was but just didn't think it was going to be my thing for whatever reason.

It's really damn good! One of those shows that's so high quality it will become your thing even if it isn't on paper. I'm 4 episodes in and totally hooked. Final season is airing now so it's a good time to catch up.

I finally finished Last of Us, so I can visit this thread again. :)
Everyone's always good about spoilers, but I still didn't risk it. I was always trailing an ep or 2 behind since it was a "watch with the wife" show and she's not a binger.

Gonna go back a few pages and see what I've missed...

Ahh… maybe I’ll just remain blissfully unaware of ep 3 responses.

I knew the song but caused me to lose the only music bet I ever lost with my wife. I thought for sure it was En Vogue with S&P guests not the other way around. Maybe I can go say the bet was a draw since it’s technically not an S&P song either…..

Watching it right now with my pregnant wife which means 1 episode takes 2 days (“I’m not sleeping!”)……lol. On episode 6 so almost done. I played the first game as well. I think the show is very good. I enjoy it. Do think it’s a bit overrated by some but pascal has been very good. Ramsey obviously as well. Offerman obviously. Didn’t really like the Melanie lynskey casting and normally like her.

To call it the best video game movie or show ever is obvious but that’s because mostly every thing else has sucked.

Pregnancy's at least a good excuse. :) I usually get, "I don't wanna watch something heavy right now". We did pretty good catching up overall, tho, I'm just playing. Got at least a couple episodes in a week. I just probably would have blown through them a lot quicker on my own.

Definitely a very well done, entertaining show. I never played the game - my prime gaming era was running to the right. But it does have us interested in seeing how they got all this plot in.

I was sure it was En Vogue too. I'm not a fan of dance music, let alone girl groups, but these chicks could sing. Their stuff wasn't (as) cookie cutter, and "Free your mind" was truly different (and got a message to boot).

Aaaand I've just learned that "Free your mind" was inspired by this:

On first listen, sounds like the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" was also inspired by this, lol.

Also, it never crossed my mind that Linda Lyndell was a while gal from Florida until I read her Wikipedia page.

making my way through 'Yellow Jackets' and it's excellent. Vibes of 'Lost' with great casting, action and music. Saw 'The Whale' and agree that Brendan Fraser deserved the best actor Oscar. 'Women Talking' could have been woke trash but instead, it's a very nuanced take on misogyny and power dynamics between men and women. It's like 'Twelve Angry Men' except with almost entirely just women sitting around and talking but it's powerful stuff. 'Afrersun' is brilliant. If you liked 'The Florida Project' you'll probably like this. It's just one of those "a day in the life" movies some find boring but this one isn't at all.

I watched Akira the other day for the first time since (I think) I was a teenager, thirty odd years ago. It was still a great watch, but to be honest, I am not sure I understood it a whole lot better than I did when I was 15. Pretty amazing design and animation, especially considering it came out in the late 80's.
