Meh, would have liked ot keep him but I hadn't realized the tax bill starts accumulating day 1 not from the deadline. Inefficient 2-guards who can't defend are literally the most common player profile in the g-league. probably half a dozen guys better than LWIV down there right now.

let's face it, if lonnie walker was getting any non-garbage playoff minutes, we're in such injury hell that a championship is already a pipe dream. this guy doesn't really move the needle at all.

meanwhile Joe doesn't have to worry about having too many mouths to feed. let walsh ease into the 10th man role without looking over his shoulder.

Doubtful we find a better 15th man who would make more of an impact in the playoffs than Lonnie.

If Brad doesn't have something up his sleeve with some bench depth this season, this could go down as his worst move as GM.

That's not all we have for bench offense. Ever heard of Hauser or Horford? Tillman and Kornet are good. Pritchard appears to be improved this season too..and does more than half court heaves.

We were like 10 points better than the 2nd place team last year in bench net rating. Spare me.

Green89 wrote:We will be going up against much better teams

That remains to be seen

Green89 wrote:a guy off the bench who can win you playoff games is exactly what every playoff team needs.

Yet 0 playoff teams offered Walker a guaranteed contract this offseason.

Zero.

Face it. The Terance Davis, Austin Rivers, Lonnie Walker, Will Barton, Reggie Bullock, Terrance Ross' of the world aren't that valuable in today's NBA

Green89 wrote:Doubtful we find a better 15th man who would make more of an impact in the playoffs than Lonnie

We don't need a 15th man. You only need to carry 14 guys. Carrying a 15th man would just add to our astroomical tax bill.

And in the playoffs, you only play like 8 or 9 guys. Your 15th man ain't moving the needle in the playoffs. What did Svi and Queta do in the playoffs last year? Nothing

Green89 wrote:If Brad doesn't have something up his sleeve with some bench depth this season, this could go down as his worst move as GM.

This makes no sense. *Every* GM in the league declined to offer walker a guaranteed contract.

At least Boston gave him a chance..at least we brought him on an exhibit 10 deal. Brad was the only GM in the league to give Walker any type of contract this offseason.

And we're the one team that doesn't need Lonnie Walker...because even without him, we're the favorites to win the title:
https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nba?tab=nba-finals

To my knowledge, there has never been a GM in NBA history who has paid $11 mil (that's what we'd pay in taxes + Walker's salary if he was on the team) for a 15th man.

And as Keith Smith explains, 15th roster spot is going unused more and more these days..especially under the new CBA..and with the addition of s 3rd 2-way spot (which means we have 17 guys on the roster..14 standard and 3 2-ways)

https://www.spotrac.com/news/_/id/2487/the-nbas-vanishing-15th-roster-spot

If there was a way for him to make the roster I think he would actually have been more like our 10th man. He would have been basically our backup SG. I think he would play ahead of Scheierman and Springer certainly and while Walsh has taken clear steps forward I think he would make more sense to play ahead of him as well just because of his scoring abilty.

White/PP
Holiday/Lonnie
JB/Hauser/Walsh
Tatum/X
Porzingis/Horford/Kornet

That's a pretty complete rotation of players that could handle injuries or extended "maintenance" stretches to keep everyone fresh over a long season. But the money obviously didn't make any sense especially with the sale of the franchise happening.

Being selfish, I hope he decides to stick around in Maine and gives Brad time to maybe make some moves because he's a player that I have always liked and he actually does potentially have a role on this team.

Think about this for a second -- The Celtics have never won a championship with a Walker on their roster. Like ever. We may have dodged a bullet here. Phew.

I think that description kills it for him “inefficient two guard who hasn’t defended” but if he goes I also think he Will absolutely murder the G league and be the best guy there.

Which will be fun so I’m fine with it for now. He’s in extended training camp/tryout mode imo to see if he can get his game tighter if not he’s a foot note.

Brad signs him to Maine
Brad trades Springer at the deadline to Char for their 2nd or the Pels 2nd they own
Brad elevates Walker to replace Springer
Brad wins 25' NBA GM
Brad raises the Larry O'Brien Trophy

I think the last two on the list are likely.
I think Brad likes Springer more than Walker.

I think waiving Lonnie was was the best thing for Lonnie with NY and LA rumored to be interested. Denver is crazy if they don't at least inquire as well. I wish him the best as long as he's not playing us.

I agree with this. We usually have multiple starters who can score on the floor with the second unit so I'd argue that Springer's defensive ability at the point of attack is more valuable than Walker's ability to iso-score (along with being 3 years younger). I think the tax implications are just the icing on the cake.

Everyone was saying that Walker would have cost us $10M in Taxes.

But . . .

What would be the relief on the Taxes, if we Traded Springer, with no one coming back?
And, isn't Springer a higher Tax liability than Walker?

There's no question that Walker is a better player, Right?

Short term absolutely a better player.. Also a far better fit.. I said it before and I will say it again, if any of our starters were to go down Walker could start and fit in seamlessly..Springer would be like throwing a wrench into an Engine..

I don't see how denver wouldn't be considered a big time option for walker.. With the way the joker passes and sets up his shooters, he would be a solid pickup..

The problem is that no one wants Springer unless the Celtics pay (2nd round pick or two) to move him. Springer is viewed as a salary dump.

Idk it’s looking very strongly like no one wants Lonnie Walker. I’ll have to go back and check the details but it sounds like they didn’t even give him one of the tiny bonus/affiliate G league contracts.
