Also, I don’t imagine a female head coach facing any extra scrutiny in this day and age. She won’t have to go through what Jackie Robinson did. Would likely be celebrated, might even be judged less harshly for her coaching (which is complicated in its own way for thinking about fairness and equal treatment). Like, it wouldn’t be a huge PR win?

There was a D'Amico tweet saying those who love the Celtics Championship Team in 2008 are up for a good awakening tomorrow...

KG as his guest?
And if he moved to the right market he could rename his 'cast View from the Raptors.

I think he intentionally made the tweet look like it could be the naming of a coach.
I guess it's possible? I have no knowledge. I just looked back in his twitter feed a little bit and found that. I've never listened to that podcast, but nothing has been released since he tweeted that on June 7th.

Don Nelson parted ways with the Mavs. Maybe CBS can snatch him up in front office.

I'm not sure if it's just not being articulated correctly by people that have this opinion but I wonder if what they are alluding to is that a woman CAN'T be the most qualified. They've never played in the NBA. They've never been inside a men's locker room, privy to the banter and chemistry formed there and in all likelihood have never coached professional male athletes before. How can someone that lacks all this BE the most qualified? It's of course impossible to get that experience without first getting a chance. So there's a Catch-22. But a woman will never know what it's like inside the locker room with male athletes. Obviously she experienced locker rooms with women but it's a completely different thing. So won't it be harder to win them over and command respect? Won't it be that much more difficult and a barrier is being introduced that doesn't need to be something an owner, G.M. and players necessarily want to deal with? I'm not saying many of these posters aren't misogynists with their takes on a female coach, maybe they are, but maybe they just know it introduces challenges that aren't attractive to teams and players and for various reasons, they feel a woman can never truly be the "most qualified", but they aren't properly explaining that in their posts.
I personally think these challenges can be overcome. It will require a little getting used to and a chance will need to be taken and adjustments made and there are some very qualified women in this sport who deserve a chance. The woman will need to be very brave and resilient though because breaking that barrier will require it. She'll get so much heat. I think once it does happen and the woman has some success it'll open the floodgates in all sports. I also think a subset of fans will mock it no matter what and there's nothing we can say or do to change their minds about it so why even try.
Thanks for an honest and non-inflammatory post about a tough subject.
My immediate counter would be that there are female assistant coaches in the NBA and I’ve heard absolutely no evidence for the kind of difficulties you describe. Celtics players absolutely *loved* Kara Lawson.
Is that documented anywhere?
I saw the pic of all the players wearing Duke shirts to congratulate her on accepting the Duke job. And the video of Scal saying how at one practice he observed her really command practice and plays jaws drop when she was giving them tips to help their game (not sure if Scal was exaggerating that, though..)
Is there anything else out there (quotes, articles, tweets, videos, etc.) to support that Celtics players *loved* Lawson? If they was really that loved, I would think this should be a pretty easy decision on hiring her.
Also, Tatum went on record saying he hoped Evan Turner would get the job (seemed like a quote that was worded oddly, like maybe it had been taken out of context) but if Tatum was coached by both Turner and Lawson but his choice is Turner, what does that tell you about how he feels about Lawson?
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

I can look for a quote, I may have misremembered. But it sounded to me like Tatum was joking, and even if he genuinely preferred Turner, that doesn’t mean it was because of tension with Lawson.

Yeah wouldn't be surprised if he was joking - considering other than that 1 quote by Tatum we have heard literally nothing at all about Turner being even a remote possibility as the new head coach..

It really doesn't matter who we want as the next coach.
It is who the players AND ownetship wants as a coach. For the players it's their preference, for ownship it's who they believe will be best for the team. Theresa Witherspoon sounded awesome today on the airwaves.

Maybe you need a man coach (to become a better man), but technically speaking we are in the market for a basketball coach.

That'd be a hilariously obvious choice. And very Celticish.

Okay, overlooking the fact that Lawson was apparently incredibly successful as an assistant coach for the C's male players last season, I am curious as to the capacity by which you have managed a comparative study of the differences between men's and women's locker rooms.
is a study needed? A woman can't enter a men's locker room. She can't be a part of the banter, camaraderie, big swinging D energy that's in there. Of course women's locker rooms have their version of this too but it is different enough to be an adjustment. She won't be as close to the players as a male coach because she won't be around them as much and maybe won't see them quite as unfiltered. It just makes it that much harder to establish a rapport that's all. It can be overcome and will. And if a player has an issue or lets it affect his play they likely aren't worth keeping.

It’s not idiotic to question whether a female coach is a good idea. I mean, if the players advocate for it fine but I haven’t heard that yet. That guys post wasn’t in the best taste but a ban? Seems excessive

Ban is due to his entire history of bad posts, not just this one.

Re: Who will coach the Celtics in 2021-22?
This man simply loves the game of basketball. You can just see it. I feel like our Celtic players will find this type of energy refreshing, with the way cassell gets out there onto the practice court with the players, mixes it up, and isn't afraid to go 1 on 1 with a really talented young player (SGA) with everyone watching. I see Sam out on the court mixing it up, playing 1 on 1 vs SGA, hitting a shot and then walking off the court with a big smile on his face saying "it's playoff time, baby" and I can see how this is the type of guy our Celtic players would be able to relate to, have a bond/connection with him and he's the type of guy our players will want to go to war with him and run through a wall for him.
Maybe Stevens did walk onto the practice court, challenge Brown or Tatum to a game of 1 on 1 during their rookie season at practice before a playoff game, and then proceed to nail a jumper in their face, but I doubt it..
