The Celtics should be going after real stars/ difference makers such as Kevin Durant, Cousins, Davis, Griffin, Harden, Westbrook etc. Plus I don't think Butler will be able to recruit another star player here.
Davis and Westbrook aren't going anywhere this offseason. Harden too esp. if Howard's leaving. I also don't think Harden would defer to KD as the alpha on the team. Griffin would be my preference over Butler. A guy who works harder than most and hates losing more than anything -- why wouldn't anyone want to play with Jimmy?
If I'm Durant, my line of thinking should be, "okay, I've already tried beating these guys by outpunching them on offense and failed. Maybe the way to take them down is to have crazy, rabid mofo defenders at every position and just enough offense/shooting." Sell him on the defensive core of Smart-Butler-Crowder-[insert defensive center here*], one of the best coaches in the next 20 years, an easier road to the Finals in the East, an ability to upgrade (via incoming picks) if need be, and an owner who isn't hesitant to overspend if it would mean banners. It wouldn't be easy, but if he's leaving OKC, he should at least listen to Danny's pitch.
*Howard on the cheap (although I doubt some stars would like to play alongside him), Bogut, Mahinmi, Biyombo (?); Not too many options here unfortunately.
EDIT: You want as many two-way players as possible, not necessarily superstars, alongside Durant. This is why I would prefer John Wall as the Celtics starting PG over IT (but IT's contract is obviously a bargain with his current production).
