I know it has been frustrating and he has worked hard, but it seems like Stevens and the players have been talking him out of being kind of hang-dog for a year now.

Just 'cos I'm silly...

After his recovery from leg injury, it took Paul George 150 games to record a 30-9-8 game, in 48 minutes. It took Hayward 21 games (and less than 30 minutes) while coming off the bench.

TRADE Hayward!!! Trade him now. He's no good. He's a bust! Ainge is an idiot for trading for him. He was never really that good before, and now he's just awful! Etc....
The funny thing is that this kind of drivel was not only being spouted on the GB, but in this (the C's) forum as well.

I do love seeing Gordon coming off the bench right now. I think that was exactly the kind of motivation / opportunity that he needs to help get his confidence back. As a starter I think there was just way too much pressure being put on him to be the old Hayward too quickly, and not enough time to work his way back into things.
I also love hearing how Smart got into his craw during practice. Smart's importance on this team is amazing. I wonder if GH ever had another teammate like Smart.

After watching the game and then the Gordon highlights afterwards... it was apparent to me Gordon was haunting familiar grounds as he probably had a lot of great games in Minnesota the past few years while playing for Utah. Almost every time Gordon drove to the basket, Minny's defense would panic and collapse... then Gordon would consistently pass out to the open teammate for a uncontested shot. Unbelievably, several times Minny's defense would inexplicably lose track of Gordon sitting alone at the three point line for his own open shot.

The man is dangerous... I for one am totally expecting great things from this point on for the Celtics with two or three go-to guys firing on all cylinders every game. The question for opposing defenses is not going to be how do we defend against Kyrie or Gordon... it is how do we defend against the Celtics' team as they are playing very unselfish?

This perfectly puts his progress into perspective. What's important is that there is a noticeable trend of improvement.

Almost a triple double, I hope this doesn’t become an habit... I’ll be very worried for the EC.

My first thought was how in the heck is that a Celtics record off the bench? Surely McHale had games with 30 points, 9 boards, and..... oh wait, nvm. :)

was he always facilitating during his time in Utah? I've been positively surprised with his capacity to share the ball and find open players.

It only took me two days to complete this project... two seconds for the concept and the rest of the time for image editing. I couldn't be more ashamed to post it.

It's very nice Constable. You should keep making Gordon goodies this year and various Celtics things.

Good article.

https://www.bostonherald.com/2018/12/16/in-search-of-the-old-gordon-hayward/

“As I get further into the season my ankle will get stronger and stronger, and then that will translate into confidence going to the rim, and challenging bigs and things like that,” said the Celtics forward. “I still think I’m not there yet on that front. I’ve made a lot of strides as far as my movement is concerned. But I’m still not fully confident as far as challenging bigs at the rim, going for alley-oops and stuff, and getting as high as I’m capable of.”

Though Hayward has engineered some bright flashbacks to his pre-injury self – that 30-point, nine-rebound, eight-assist near-triple double in Minneapolis on Dec. 1 was more than anyone could have predicted this early in the comeback process — his progress still charts like the stock market.

“It’s hard, coming back from the injury he came back from. We commend him,” said Marcus Smart. “We’re proud of him, and he has a lot of work to do just getting back to Gordon. He judges how he feels. But we’re happy for him. We’re here to do everything we can for him. It’s a tough challenge, but I think he’s been taking it very well.”

Indeed, Hayward’s greatest contributions won’t come until he’s once again comfortable in his own body.

“Getting healthy and being healthy is the first thing you have to worry about,” said Hayward. “When you’re not healthy you can’t do the things you want on the court. That’s the hurdle I want to go over first, and then I can try to figure everything else out.”

I am 100% cool right now with Hayward coming off the bench as he works his way all the way back. He has given us glimpses in games against Milwaukee, Atlanta, and especially against Minny. We all know what Hayward is capable of and what he will eventually be again down the line.
For now, he is doing well. He's so versatile even at 60% of his capacity. He can create for himself and score...he can shoot. But what he's doing the best out of his game right now is facilitating for others. Seems like he is most comfortable deferring to teammates and getting them the ball in good spots. Gordon is a HECK of a passer. He sees over defenses exceptionally well. I'm pretty sure he could average 10apg if they let him have the ball in his hands to create more often.

Anyway, I'm staying patient. He had me worried for awhile, but has played much better over the last 10.

Don't worry, Gord. I've been getting as high as I'm capable of for the past 22 years, and it's not really all that anymore.
