JD Davison’s MVP is a good reminder that Celtics will probably sign a 15th player over the next week or so. It’s felt all along like Drew Peterson made the most sense given his involvement in NBA games, but wonder if C’s could affirm what JD’s done over last 3 yrs with a deal.
Right it’s kind of present vs future will be interesting to watch for next week.
I’d rather it be Peterson
You know I was thinking this was a bit of a toss up but after mulling it over JD is going to get the 15th roster spot next week.

Re: Welcome to Boston, JD Davison! – (G League MVP, 2025)
Think of it this way-
Roster guys that can play the following positions:
1: PP/White/Jrue
2: Brown/White/Jrue/Hauser/etc
3: Tatum/Brown/Hauser/Scheierman/Walsh/Craig etc etc
4: Tatum/Horford/Double big/Tillman
5: innumerable big men
I like DrewP and whole heartedly throw him a two way next year but I’ll be shocked if they don’t give the 15th spot to JD for both now and later.

You know, I can't see Davison getting in over Peterson.
Peterson is more NBA Savvy. Davison is great, but only in the G League, thus far.

Even if Peterson is a better NBA player right now, which certainly isn't a given, the fact that he has a year of two way eligibility left and a lot more guys on the main roster that duplicate his skills, make Davison the logical choice to elevate to a regular contract.

Re: Welcome to Boston, JD Davison! – (G League MVP, 2025)
I still just struggle to understand what we'd do with JD in the short or long-term.
Short term (e.g. this season) I don't see a scenario where he'd crack the rotation even in the face of multiple injuries. Even if we lost 2/3 of our PG's, we've got ball-handling wings and guys who can cover guards defensively, so I'd expect minutes to just get redistributed across the guys already on the roster.
Long term I don't see JD as a fit nor do I see a realm where we can develop him in a way that he could be flipped for value. He's best with the ball in his hands making things happen, that doesn't fit Joe's system. We're never going to give our 3rd/4th guard the ball and say "go cook", he's not suited to play off-ball and if he's not producing offensively he's going to be a net negative most likely. And since we can't let him shine in our system, teams aren't about to give us anything for him.
His G-League play has certainly earned him a shot at the NBA level and I wouldn't begrudge Brad giving him a contract for the 15th spot (especially considering he can't come back on another two-way in the future), but this just feels like a situation where he's gotta go elsewhere if he's ever going to reach his full potential.

At this point, we don't really know if JD's game can translate to the NBA, and more specifically to the Celtics. We have only seen him in garbage time for the most part. I would be really curious, however, to see him get substantial minutes alongside our starters. Getting 25 minutes or so of playing time with Tatum, Brown, Holiday, and Porzingis over several games would perhaps give us an answer. I agree that he's best with the ball in his hands, and that that does not fit Joe's system, but can he adapt his game? I'd like to find out, and I think he deserves that shot.

Pretty much agree. JDD may be an NBA player, or may not be. But it’ll be hard to maximize him here in Boston.
But, as an aside, if a guy has a chance to be impactful at the NBA level and you spend 3 yrs and probably a couple million dollars in team resources to develop him, you don’t want the payoff to be on someone else’s team just because he doesn’t fit your “system” …
That’s something I really appreciated about Brad, if a guy could help the Celtics win, Brad would adjust the scheme so that player would have a chance to shine. It wasn’t like Brad could only succeed with one player archetype. In the bubble year our four centers were Theis, Kanter, Rob and Grant, who were all different types of bigs…
It’s hard at this level to get talent within the budget. If a player can help us win, I want him on the team. And a guy with a quirky game that doesn’t fit the system I particularly value those players for several reasons. They are easier to get because other teams overlook them bc their value isn’t obvious. And with Mazzulla ball particularly, we sometimes get into redundancy/predictability ruts where all our offensive players are trying to play the same way. So a different style of player is like a knuckleballer and just the notion of variety or diversity is sometimes valuable as an offensive concept.
Okay, kinda longwinded and not about JDD so much as just a general observation about the Mazzulla Celtics wanting all the players to fit the “system”

Agree with the posts above, there's no place for JDD on this team unfortunately. I can't see Brad just letting him go, so I expect him to be signed to a contract that could be later used as trade ballast.

If Davison signs with another team this offseason, will he get 30 pages in that teams forum ?

Huge for Chisholm if true...
Per Bobby Manning: "Davison's contract for 1 game will be worth around $26K. That keeps #Celtics in 5th luxury tax bracket and only increases their tax hit by about ~$90-100K."

Congrats to the G league king! I’m surprised, but it’s the only way to retain his value as an asset. Glad they’re able and willing to do that.
