Rudy and his agent say not interested.

And if they say not interested, then there is no deal.

Nice story.

Rudy ain't coming here. That boat sailed when we signed Wafer. It's all about a big man now.

We know. My post explained the why.

Doc, obviously, wouldn't commit to the rotation minutes.

It never got to the point of what the Celtics would give up in exchange.

Rudy isn't a FA Boston can't have any contact with Rudy Fernandez. He specified the teams that he wanted to go and Boston was one of them the "he wants to start" thing was simplification of the issue. He wants to play he wants to go to a team that fits his style of play and not back up the teams best player who is roughly the same age as him. In POR he is caught in a situation because of his age that he was playing out his prime essentially waiting 3 years for his contract to expire and then would either have to go to Europe or essentially take a make good contract at 28 years old. While neither Boston or Chicago are likely going to start him he would have been given a chance to earn the 6th man role and possibly become the starter down the road a situation he doesn't real have in POR.

Boston still has a chance for Rudy IMO because the Blazers want an additional 1st round draft pick that they can throw into a larger deal to get a big fish. Rudy wants to play for Boston and it looks like the Celtics are willing to include one 1st round draft pick. Will it be enough? Who knows?

I expect both the Rudy saga and the Celtics big man search to end this week.

Just my understanding of following the situation is that POR under Pritchard was looking for a 1st rounder for Rudy, and the market was created and teams sort came forward with their deals. When Cho replaced him he saw all of these offers and instead of thinking that this was the high end of the market for Fernandez decided all these teams are so interested I will try and get more and in turn just pissed everyone off who had already been waiting a month for answer. My guess is that CHI already moved on with the Brewer signing, Ainge has said he is done at the SG/SF spot and now Cho may be faced with taking the Knicks offer which was considered the weakest of the 3 because of having to take back Douglas' contract and waiting till '13 for the pick. I don't think Fernandez plans on showing up to camp in POR, if he isn't dealt he will just try and play overseas.

^ Can he do that? I thought the NBA/FIba put in rules that expressly prohibit that sort of thing. Unless tou mean Portland just releases him or something.

In my opinion, Portland got greedy in their efforts to trade Fernandez. That is, if you're to believe any of these reports and rumors. First I'd read that Portland is seeking a first round pick for Fernandez. Then I read a rumor that they'll want an additional first round pick if they include Przybilla too.

My feeling is Ainge might have scoffed at that seeing as Boston could be the one team with an interest in acquiring Przybilla as well. I think Portland sees that Boston is willing to offer a first round pick for Fernandez, and feel that they'll try to squeeze Boston for an additional one for Przybilla. That's unrealistic. You've a center who'll turn thirty-one in October and is rehabbing from two separate surgeries on the same knee. He isn't worth a first round pick from any team.

Here is the "rumored" offer by Portland:

$8.65M - Rudy Fernandez, Joel Przybilla and Portland 2011 2nd to Boston
$7.08M - Rasheed Wallace, Tony Gaffney, 2011 & 2013 1st round picks (both picks lottery protected over several years) to Portland

Aldridge still thinks it will be us or the Bulls landing Rudy. Hopefully this thing doesn't drag out too much longer.

11) Portland: Blazers stlll likely to deal Rudy Fernandez to either Celtics or Bulls

Since you just signed wafer and your roster is at 14, adn the Knicks is in negotiations with Brown. I think the Bull's have the best shot at landing Fernandez..especially if they're dangling the Bobcats pick or Taj. We'll find out soon.

While I am sure there a rules against it the problem is enforcing the rules and whether or not it is worth it for POR and the NBA over Rudy Fernandez. In the reverse it is simple a team in Europe can sue the NBA a huge international corporation to stop them from taking something that is theirs. The NBA wants to be able to do business overseas so it has to be mindful of the situation, but some team in Spain, Italy, or Greece doesn't care about its American market.

It certainly is interesting with the lockout on the horizon. Guys are going to need cash as they will be unable to secure the crazy lines of credit they could in the past and will likely go overseas to get it contract or not.

Are the Bulls actually offering that though? The only offer I heard from the Bulls, not what fans, Sam Smith, or what the Blazers wanted, was James Johnson. The Bulls are under the cap so if they wanted to they could send a future 1st. But they already have Brewer, Korver, and Watson that they added this off season. Now I am not saying they don't need more depth at the position and wouldn't be interested in Rudy but he doesn't seem to be a clear upgrade and could end up in the same situation he is in with POR rotation wise. I don't see them giving up a Taj Gibson or anything more than a lottery protected 1st.

Boston needs Przybilla as much as it might want Fernandez. In Boston Rudy would be competing to back up a 35 year old Ray Allen and 33 year old Paul PIerce with Marquis Daniels and Von Wafer.

Celtics still in market for a long-range shooter

The Celtics will start the regular season without defensive-minded center Kendrick Perkins, who is recovering from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The club is seeking another long-range shooter as well as a big man to complete its roster.

So I went and read through the clublazers thread linked earlier in this thread.

http://www.clubblazers.com/blazers-disc ... 94-60.html

Some interesting stuff some interesting links. As I mentioned CHI doesn't make sense and there only involvement was the offer of Johnson and they were turned down and signed Brewer.

The Knicks are still just offering 2014 first rounder and Tony Douglas and don't seem interested in dealing Randolph which only makes sense.

The delay may be that POR is trying to make this a 3 team deal and sending Sheed and the picks to New Orleans for Darren Collison and some contract ugly they have most likely Posey.

Boston trades Rasheed Wallace, two minimum contracts, and a package of draft picks for Rudy Fernandez and Joel Przybilla

Portland trades Rudy Fernandez and Joel Przybilla for Darren Collison and James Posey

New Orleans trades Darren Collison and James Posey for Rasheed Wallace, two minimum contracts, and a package of draft picks

This deal works and makes sense for everyone involved as POR turns Rudy and Przy into Collison and Posey, NO gets to dump some money but now we see what the sticking point is on the second first rounder as NO is going to want more than a late first for Collison.

But I would like to see this done.

Przybilla probably doesn't help Boston right now. Instead, he's a player that would help you after the All-Star break. When healthy, he still must work himself back into game shape. That takes time, a lot of time for some players.

I'm having a hard time understanding why you really want a player included in a deal for another player who might not be ready to help your team from the start. Unless Ainge is mainly doing so to take the contract off of Portland's hands. Because I haven't read anywhere that Portland is insisting that a team take on Przybilla's contract in addition to acquiring Fernandez. So why can't you try to get Fernandez by himself? I think the answer has more to do with Portland than Boston.

For instance, what's wrong with Oliver Lafayette, Tony Gaffney and a first round pick in exchange for Rudy Fernandez? It works financially.

I've to believe that Portland must prefer to trade Fernandez in a three team deal.

It's debatable if Joel Przybilla will even play at all next season.

Fwiw, I asked about the timetable for Pryz' return on a Portland board and got this response. Of course, we'd only want him if he could actually play this year. The salary savings do nothing to help us win more games:

Originally injured on Dec 22, 2009. The time table at that time said he would be ready for fall camp to begin.

~March 7, 2010, Joel slips in the shower and re-injures his knee.

The latest info I've heard is that he will be able to resume 5 on 5 drills by late September / early October and be available to play by mid to late November.

If a team keeps Joel on the inactive list, because of his injury (i.e. 13-15) on Dec 22, 2010, then his insurance kicker comes into play and a team that owns his rights will get reimbursed for one year of his salary.

Essentially, Joel's remaining 2010-2011 salary will be covered. So Joel's contract is also very attractive in a team essentially getting a top 20-25 center in the NBA for free this year.

The reports I read that were dated the end of May that he was on the bike and probably wouldn't be ready for the start of camp but the start of the season which would put his rehab at about 8-9 months which is what is expected.

Return to Boston Celtics
