For me, its just a gut feeling.

Look at Haywards career path. His rookie year he averaged less ppg in about the same amount of min per game on a team that won a lot less games. That's why we aren't trading our assets for more picks. You have to wait 4-5 years to hope they may be a star.

the other guys this applies to: Paul George and Jimmy Butler.

It's all about timing though. What timeline do we want to build for? That's what makes this bizzaroworld right now. E.g., can we max out Hayward and then trade him in two years if we decide Jaylen or Josh Jackson are ready for his spot? Should theoretically get ok return on that, just have the risk of something going wrong with a max contract and getting stuck with it.

The history of high profile FA signing in Boston has been a disaster. I feel like Al Horford might be the first successful big time FA in any of the major sports. I have to be missing someone but it has just been really bad.

Revis succeeded here?

Hayward wears #20 in Utah...the last Celtic to wear that number--?

Ainge at least has this up his sleeve for GH

I knew there was one. Man Ram was legit. I thought Revis was a trade but I think you are right he ended up getting waived and then signed as a FA.

Revis was 12mil after Tampa cut him -- kind of a weird situation and only lasted a year.
Manny is the one big $$ savior that's worked for the Sox, though the Josh Beckett signing was plenty successful too, but then again I wasn't going to get into this.

I was rooting hard against Utah in the playoffs. Glad to see a Golden State sweep to erase any thoughts that Utah can compete in the East. Getting Hayward for no assets would be a great move no matter how the ping-pong balls fall

We can give him the same money 1 less year, yea? I mean he's taking a 2 year deal with a player option regardless of where he signs so it's all good.
Good assessment:

Can teams sign and trade these guys if they want to leave in FA to give them the full max? In other words, could Utah agree to sign Haywood knowing he's leaving anyway to grab some assets rather than lose him for nothing or do they have to wait 3 months before they can trade him?
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

yep. this.

Hayward will be the starting SF for the Celtics on opening night 2017. I know Ainge tried like heck to land Durant/Horford last offseason and nearly pulled it off, but it's the summer of 2017 where Ainge is best positioned to knock it out of the park.

Draft lottery will play a big role on whether Ainge drafts a player VS trades for another star caliber player.

I love the little run this team is on in the playoffs right now, but when it ends, I'll sleep alright knowing that this offseason is where Banner 18 will be born.

Add Fultz in the draft and we're super small. Wont need/have to make decision on Bradley/Crowder until deadline or in the summer of 18'.

I don't think we got cap space to do this?

Based on the last time I looked at it, we just have to get off Rozier(now looks like we'd get a nice future pick in return) and keep Yabu out another year and we're close enough to get it done if we did no other moves.

If the cap is at least 101 mil, we can field this team and be just under the limit:

Player 2017-18 salary
Avery Bradley $8,808,989.00
Jaylen Brown $4,956,480.00
Jae Crowder $6,796,117.00
Al Horford $27,734,405.00
Terry Rozier $1,988,520.00
Marcus Smart $4,538,020.00
Isaiah Thomas $6,261,395.00
Abdel Nader $815,615.00
Ante Zizic $1,645,200.00
2017 # 1 Pick $7,026,240.00
Gordon Hayward $30,300,000

Thomas / Fultz* / Rozier
Bradley / Smart
Hayward / Brown / Nader
Crowder
Horford / Zizic

I assume we would then try to condense some of our guard/wing depth in a trade for a front court player to pair with Horford. Would be a bonus if we could save some cap space while doing so, in order to bring over Yabu as well. Fill it out with veteran minimum guys from there (hopefully some of our own guys-Johnson, Jerebko, Green). Olynyk is the big missing player here, probably need to trade a guy like Bradley or Crowder & another piece (Rozier?) for future draft picks if we want to retain him. I don't know how likely that is.

Doesn't work, cap factors in 12 roster slots, you'd get whacked with a ghost cap hold putting you over the limit. One of Smart, Bradley or Crowder is likely going to have to go to make it work
