Smart is going to sign the qualifying offer and give it another shot next summer.

I don't expect the results to be that much different for him a year from now.

Naw, I would not be surprised to see Danny offer the same contract as last season.

Kind of like, its ok young fella, you messed up last time, but I am still here for ya.

You don’t have any cap space. You’ll have the MLE regardless. You’re not gonna have any cap space in the next several years. Your core is set. Your team is virtually set.

So unless this is about the luxury tax, which it could be, I don’t see why you don’t just sign the guy for 4 and 12mil per

He turned that down to go to RFA and reportedly now that the reality has hit him that he isn't going to get anything close to that on the market he is "hurt and upset" that the team didn't wildly trump that offer on the first night of FA. He is reportedly not responding to the team's efforts to sit down and talk right now.

This is all just "reports" but there is actual video evidence of Danny and Brad reaching out to Marcus directly in Vegas while he was "meeting with other teams" who didn't offer him anything.

I don't think the issue is the team being willing to sign him to the 4/48 contract (until we hear otherwise) I think the issue is Marcus accepting that. To be fair an additional issue is that he immediately becomes trade bait as soon as he signs that deal (at least in December).

If Marcus signs our Qualifying Offer, we would retain his Bird Rights next summer when he's an Unrestricted Free Agent, right?

Can’t set a precedent like that which can hurt future negotiations with other players. Not in best interest of Celtics.

I wouldn't be so sure that 4/48 is on the table (or that it was actually even offered last year). That puts the Celtics in luxury tax immediately.

Last year perhaps with Hayward Ainge thought Smart would break out finally and play well as a role player.

But that was last year, instead in his contract year he didn't do much different from the previous 3 seasons besides break his hand because he has mental issues.

Ainge has Irving and Rozier coming up next season and has to think of the future. Why wouldn't he want Smart on a 1 year QO as someone who is only really good for a team as a defensive specialist off the bench.

Maybe Ainge wants some Irving insurance in case Irving walks or someone offers a S&T for the injury prone star and Ainge feels good about a Rozier/Smart PG situation going forward.

Maybe Rozier gets the full max from the Nets next off season after they strike out and suddenly Ainge is willing to instead move forward paying luxury tax on a 14 mil a year Smart contract instead of a 20ish Rozier one after Irving resigns.

Or maybe he feels like even next off season Smart won't receive an offer about 9 million and he can resign him for a reasonable deal while easiely avoiding the tax this year.

Ainge could make the bet Smart breaks out again, but he'd have to do it at the expense of taking options out of his hands or if he truly believe Irving and or Rozier is gone regardless of what he does (which in that case he should work to trade them).

This is classic Danny Ainge.

Ainge is going to offer Smart a multiyear deal at a team friendly rate that he knows Marcus Smart won't take. Marcus Smart will take the 1 year QO at $6 million and become a UFA next year. Ainge can then either try to resign Smart or use one of the potential 4 first round picks to replace him. All this while staying below the tax line this year.

It isn't textbook Ainge. Textbook Ainge is to get Marcus to sign that 4/48 he offered a year ago. Looks like an overpay and then two years later it is a bargain when the cap goes up. That is what he was able to do with Bradley and Crowder. The other textbook move would have been to have traded Marcus at the trade deadline but whether injury or lack of interest could not get done. On the QO Marcus is a zero asset, a waste and that is an unfortunate outcome for the 6th pick in the draft. I think Ainge would prefer a S&T deal with a modest return than a disgruntled Smart on the QO.

I think the opposite

Danny is reoffering the same contract as before. Right now Smart is thinking he has to take the qo and try his luck at next year. No doubt he though his phone would be ringing off the hook.

Everyone expects Danny to stay at the qo.

But he instead offers more years and more money.

Ainge always wanted Smart on the QO this off-season

I think marcus signes 4/48 and morris gets dumped.

A 12 mill a year contract is very valuable to have for potential future deals.

I don't think the lux tax is as big of an issue for the team as we act in discussions it is a thing but that is what it is. The team will pay it if it has to when it has to.

More important is managing assets. It is pretty clear Ainge offered a deal approaching 12 mil per season it may have been structured in a way that allowed the team avoid the tax this year and it may not have. Marcus is toast once he signs the QO as an asset.

Sure the team can lower the offer and great if he signs but the team kind of needs contracts, everyone is either on a minimum salary, rookie deal or max salary it makes it very hard to make trades.

If Smart goes for the QO I expect that Ainge will offer the same 4/48 to Rozier, which if he takes it will likely diminish Marcus' role on the team significantly.

LOL glad Danny is in charge of this negotiation. Circumstances have changed since last year. There’s no reason he’d offer the same contract.

No other team on earth wants that trash n they just gifted him eleven mil per. Just like that. Exum’s done nothing in this league.

Exum is awful and signing him to a 33m contract is insanity. But you are right. Smart sees Exum making 11m and I bet he is thinking "If he can make 11m when can't I make 15m?"

Smart needs to fire Walters. Happy Walters seems to be great at telling his clients they can get more if they wait which is what I am guessing is going on here. I mean Noel reject a 70m dollar deal? He made 4.1 last year and is getting the vet min this year which is what around 2M?

At the end of the day though there was money to be had and despite all the rumors of the kings offering him money and sign and trades not a thing has happened. He should have taken that 4/48 deal least year.

Yup. Shoulda even taken 4/40 if that was offered. My guess is he’s not gonna even land that next year even with all that cash rolling around the league. He would have to crush it next year on offense. And we all know as marcus’s Shot becomes worse somehow his other stats go up. Anomaly

All this 4/48 stuff is just fan shorthand, too.. the actual numbers come out much more thinly sliced.. like, it could be 11, 832,500 in year 1, with 5 percent annual raises etc.

Wonder what our number is.. think how much room we have before the tax threshold, about how much Jabari will take on a non-guaranteed deal (Nader, Semi money), and how much is left for Marcus.
