The Knicks were unrelentingly rugged last year, but last night were pretty soft. They were without Robinson and Precious, but the players they really missed were Hartenstein and Randle.

Here's the scary thing for NY. Last year they averaged 46.5 fg%. In the opener they shot 55.1% and doubled the Celtics' free throws. That was a well above normal offensive performance from them, and they still got dusted.

The prognostication that the new Knick wing defenders will shut down Tatum and Brown looks a little doubtful.

Gotham observers came into the season saying, "Now they have 5 defenders and can go five out." The problem with that is, it's not the same five at the same time. Meanwhile the Celtics can do simultaneous 5 out/5D, plus sub in two more and still maintain it.

The general consensus for this season is the East is led by Boston, with NY, Philly and Milwaukee in a clear tier 2. But the reality is probably a lot more muddled. The Knicks/Sixers/Bucks are all vulnerable, while Cleveland, Orlando, Indiana and Miami are potentially dangerous. Who knows who will rise and fall?

Back to last evening- the Celtics starters were blistering. Kudos also to Luke Kornet who had a real effect despite not putting up stats. Hauser didn't shoot great, but played strong D. Several times his man tried to drive by him, couldn't, and had to kick it back out.

The whole evening was wonderful. I wish someone from the 70s champions could have been there. Also, Satch Sanders didn't make it, which is a little worrisome.

Uncontested 3s via ball movement >>> forcing shots in the paint. Teams will almost always protect the rim first.

The 61 threes is a tad bloated too 'cos Cs bench were chasing after the record. Game was over by then.

Tatum's wrist being healthy and his shot looking good is the best-case scenario. Great fun last night.

Should also be a reminder that we're clearly above the rest of the NBA when healthy. That was with no Porzingis. Just gotta stay healthy.

Couldn't agree more. Knicks will be a good team, but it's time to pump the brakes on all this New York hype. If this is the best the Eastern Conference has to offer the Celtics, this season will be a cakewalk.

I wouldn't put any real judgement on the Knicks after that game. They were put in a bad spot against a team that already has chemistry. Championship chemistry at that. Not ready to judge them yet. They will take some time to get to their final form. Whatever that is.

Knicks will definitely get better, but when I hear people/media mention that about all of our opponents, why does no one mention that WE will get better?

I get it, we won the chip, in such an eye-popping statistical way that people probably assume that’s our best. We brought everyone back, so we don’t have anything new to hit you with. I’m here to say, they are about to teach y’all better than I can tell you!

sure the Celtics were really good last year and won it all, but "the rest of the [league or East] got better"

real NBA "analysts" get paid real money to say this on TV each summer
seems like the league should be pretty damn maxed out by now if it were true
I get that it's mostly a 'zero sum' game and resources get concentrated a bit more in different cities each summer, but come at me with your Karl Anthony Towns and old ass broke ass Paul George

It's just selling hope to fans of other franchises so they keep tuning in. Kinda like the draft where the floor of every guy picked in the first round is allegedly a multi time all star when we know half those guys are going to be out of the league by the end of their rookie contracts.
