A wasted pick and a wasted 2-way contract
You can get his kind a dime a dozen in any basketball team

I don't get why pick him, and why promise a 2-way to a 57th pick

Good for Max. maybe he will surprise. for some reason the coaches seem to like the guy. let's see if he can shoot 40% from 3 in the g-league, then he might have a future.

I thought he handled PG duties pretty well, despite not hitting any shots hardly. Summer League he averaged 3.8 assts against 0.6 turnovers which I thought showed some poise. He also rebounded well in college.

Some draft analysts were high on him. Matt Powers of Swish Theory had him as his 25th best prospect in the draft. I think he has a chance to be an NBA player, as a poorman's cross between E'Twan Moore and Austin Reaves.

Is there someone you want to use the two way for rather than him?
Who should they have drafted at 57?

Maybe give him a chance?

He hasn't even played an NBA game yet. We likely won't know whether it's a good pick or not for at least a year if not 2+ years. Guys need time to develop, get acclimated to the system, to the NBA game, they need time to earn minutes and show what they can do.

A pick that late in the draft is a long shot..most of them don't make it. Not sure what you were expecting with the 57th pick, you're not getting a superstar that late lol.

Why give a 2-way to the 57th pick? Why not? Guys who get picked in the 46-60 range pretty much always sign 2-way contracts.

2-way contracts are all non-guaranteed deals, though. So a guy on a 2-way can get waived at any time with no penalty to the team.

So you lose nothing by signing him to it now.

If he hits, he could be kind of like:
-Donte Divencenzo
-Ty Jerome
-Brandin Podziemski
-Sam Merrill
-Taller Pritchard, shorter Hauser

Seems like someone who's worth a shot on a 2-way and with the 57th pick..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

This guy had Shulga ranked 22nd:

As I see it - you take a flyer on a player with at least one elite skill. Like Williams with his passing skill (he has the size)
I don't see it with Shulga. Mediocre all over
Maybe I am wrong

And the two-way - Bridges, Kendall Brown (I thought he played well in SL), Hayden Gray (one elite skill - steals) and many others
You swing for the fences with these picks (like JD with the elite athleticism), not get uncle Shulga

I think that they rely on their Scouts.
Cause, if a player was openly worth it, then he wouldn't be available at 57.

Celtics are taking a chance. They've done their due diligence and research.
We just have to see if he pans out, and that gamble pays off. If not, then what have we lost?

Of course they rely on scouting. If they don't rely on the scouting then someone needs to go.
What do we lose? A chance for a better prospect?

Off the top of my head, Sam Merrill was the 60th pick, Austin Reaves went undrafted (tho he supposedly turned down opportunities to be drafted), go way back & Steve Kerr was drafted 50th overall. Shulga kind of fits the same mold, I think he is most similar to Austin Reaves, but even if Sam Merrill, that's a score for 57.

It also wouldn't mean he's worth a salary in our situation, lets see.

I didn't no Reaves nor Merrill in Shulga
He doesn't have one great skill. Mediocre all over. Maybe I am missing something here
I hope he pans out, but I am skeptical ("What do you expect from a 57 pick" answers in 3,2,1...)

I expect a useful player that will actually get playing time and develop with time (Hauser, Queta and a bunch of other undrafted players all over the league)

You can't teach size for a PG, and Shulga has that. From what I've read and seen on videos about him is he's a hard worker. I see Divencenzo in him. I posted that well before the draft when I mentioned keeping an eye on him.

There's much more expectations on Rico and Oooogo' because their 1st rd picks with guaranteed bags. If Shulga can develop like Sam and become a rotational backcourt player I think it's a win. I want rotational players who don't hurt you when they come in. I don't see him as a player who will hurt you when he's in.

I'll be watching Maine games for sure.

Can't teach work ethic, or love of the game either. His last 3 seasons at college, he averaged over 30 minutes of playing time/game, and shot .388% from 3-point line. I think most expected to see more shooting from him during Summer League play, but clearly he wasn't being asked to do that. Instead, he was asked to play PG, and he did that pretty well. He didn't dazzle with playmaking, but made some nice dishes, and did not turn the ball over. His defense was decent, and I expect his shooting will come around. A season in Maine will benefit him.

Yup.

3 TO's in 5 games playing 20+mpg. I'm good with that.

I bet he'll show consistent improvement in Maine.

If you expect a useful NBA player with the 57th pick your expectations are out of whack. Only one 57th pick this century has turned into a legit NBA player (Marcin Gortat). If you expect something that happened once in twenty four attempts to happen again on the 25th you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

I was talking specifically about pick #57. Didn't think it was necessary to comb through every late draft slot to make that point. There's zero NBA rotation players taken #58 or #59 by the way. There's IT taken 60th you are right, and I'll even concede Merrill if people want to include him. Still that's like 3 out 100 guys. The point remains. I'm not sure how the expectation can be that something that 3% of the time is going to happen here.

The pool of player is huge
To find a useful player late 2nd and undrafted is really hard
This is why the scouts and GMs gets paid

I am a fan, not holding any position in the org. I expect the team to win the championship each and every year. I expect the players we draft and sign to be good. I can have unreasonable expectations :)

They also want to field a good team in Maine for the fans each season. :dontknow:

Return to Boston Celtics
