I saw Star Wars the other night. I understand the criticisms on the script and they are justified, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. There was enough good in there for me to not worry too much about the bad. I liked what Johnson did with Episode 8, the story needed to have some originality and new direction to it. But it does seem they caved somewhat in Episode 9 to the overly vocal internet crowd that pissed and moaned endlessly about where Johnson took the script on Last Jedi.
It's like "The Force Awakens is just the same as A New Hope - wah wah wah". And then it's like "The Last Jedi is not a real Star Wars movie, that's not MY Luke Skywalker - wah wah wah".
Hopefully they start making some more original stories that have nothing to do with the Skywalker story line now. I saw a tweet or a comment somewhere ages ago, probably in the lead up to Episode 7, that pretty much sums it up for me. I'll paraphrase it slightly, but basically - light sabre duels and space battles are cool, trade federations, politics, midochlorians and battle droids are not. It seems pretty simple really.
I liked Episode 7,8 and 9. I liked Solo. I really, really liked Rogue One. The Mandalorian has been good too. They are enjoyable, they are well made, they look amazing, they actually built sets and models and shot on location. I am happy to be see good quality new content being made in order to ease some of the pain associated with the prequels.
