Shane Battier?… Imma need half a cup of context.

Simons is a rhythm scorer. Once he got to Boston, Mazzulla told him right off the bat that he's going to have to come off the bench and focus on his defense. Probably the first time in his career he's heard it lol and there's some merit to it. We do have a certain brand as a top defense. That's not Simon's main issue though. Pritchard was promoted to starter. That put Simons in a position where he was expected to get buckets off the bench on demand, and as a rhythm scorer, that's not easy. Especially when you're expected to cut to the wing/corner and play off ball for the first time in your career. He's had to make a major adjustment as a scorer while learning Celtics defense and finding his way around off ball. It's a big ask for a guy that might've been brought in for money reasons alone. We're kinda nerfing his career imo.

Based on what I've read on the board, it sounds like they want Simons to play the Shane Battier role and play it passably. A true reinvention of himself as a player at 26 years old. And that seems to be Mazzulla's expectation as well. It's even more complicated for Mazz though. So if Simons was brought in for largely money reasons, if Simons isn't going to be a primary offensive weapon for us, if Simons can't play Battier lite playing solid d and maximizing his minutes, well then you have to look at his minutes as interfering with our young bucks. (Not to mention Pritchard and White kicked the rust off and have been much more inspiring in their minutes than earlier in the season).

Minott, Walsh, and Hugo are all meeting or exceeding my expectations. There's no way I want to take minutes from them in a season that JT is out injured and Simons wasn't a planned pregnancy (figuratively speaking). It is of the utmost importance that we develop them so they're ready to compete for a title next season. We're not getting our money's worth from Simons unless we make him 1B. Or at least 1A on the second unit lol and we haven't even given him the key to that obvious role. Otherwise, even a big Simons fan such as myself looks at Minott, Walsh, and Hugo and thinks they're scoring well and can already play defense at a higher level than Simons. And they're all capable of playing with a Battier like all around performance. More dangerous off ball.

Like, to sum it up, it took Simons 12 games to set a franchise scoring record. He's got the record for points off the bench in one half with 25. He got the record in a revenge win against the Magic. But you know what's funny? He was benched the entire second half lol. We've only let him play that freely in a few games. And never a full game lol. It's unheard of to bench a player in that situation. There's a mild sense of exclusion. It just leaves me scratching my head.

The young bucks can't score like Simons, but they can score the way Mazzulla wants them to in our system, they can do it as well or better than Simons, and they can do it while guarding multiple positions.

This is a fantastic breakdown. I think your point about Simons as a rhythm scorer is so on point. That tho is always the problem with his game. Whether start or off the bench, if he can't get that rhythm going, he's kinda useless on the floor. He doesn't do anything else good enough to justify staying on the court.

The Simons experience the Celtics are seeing is what he was in Portland. I think him learning under Dame really was a detriment to his game because he does share some skillsets with Lillard, but he never had the PnR game and playmaking Dame did. Dame could will himself into a rhythm in a way Simons can't. He's either got it on a night or not. That's just a hard dude to play on a team consistently. If he's starting, there's nights he's just gonna give you next to nothing or be hurting your team because he's trying to start an engine that's just not gonna start. If he's off the bench, he's not gonna play enough to get good stats because a coach will just pull him within a few min after they see it's not there.

Replace Reed Sheppard with Simons and the Rockets will be better.

Maybe? He's just kinda a weird fit player.

Because the Rockets are a big team, Simons' size and not so good defense will not be that big of a factor.

Simons can just focus on offense.

I see the logic, but if he's not hitting, the Rockets are playing 4 on 5 when he's on the court.

Top current season 3pt percentages, all in the 44-48% range, are Gonzalez, Scheierman, Walsh, Minott, and Garza (in declining order).

Next, all in the 33-38% range, are Simons, Brown, Hauser, White, and Pritchard (in declining order).

Below that it gets ugly. ;)

The guys leading in overall FG% are Queta, followed by the five leaders in 3pt%.

The guys ranking high in 2pt and 3pt FG% alike are Walsh, Garza, and to some extent Minott.

White, Brown and Pritchard lead in assists/game, very close in the 5.0-5.1 range.

Simons is next at 2.4 (n fewer minutes), followed by Queta at 1.6.

Looking at assists/minute elevates Harper and to some extent Minott, but otherwise doesn't change the picture much. Baylor is low even by that metric, and Walsh is lower yet.

The Celtics just finished a 12 game stretch with 10 games against playoff teams above .500. They went 9-3 despite missing Queta for two games, Brown for two games and White for one game.

vs ORL (Win, 138-129)
vs DET (No Queta) (Win, 117-114)
at MIN (Loss, 115-119)
at CLE (B2B, No White or Queta) (Win, 117-115)
vs NYK (Win, 123-117)
at WAS (No Brown) (Win, 146-101)
vs LAL (B2B) (Win, 126-105)
at TOR (Win, 121-113)
@ MIL (Loss, 101-116)
vs DET (Loss, 105-112)
vs MIA (Win, 129-116)
at TOR (B2B, No Brown) (Win, 112-96)

They now play 7 consecutive games against teams with a win percentage below .450. None are higher than a 10th seed. Granted the stretch does include their longest road trip of the year (5 games) and West Coast trips are always tricky. Still, they have a chance to stack some wins.

12/22 vs IND
12/26 @ IND
12/28 @ POR
12/30 @ UTA
1/1 @ SAC
1/3 @ LAC
1/5 vs CHI

The Celtics next game is on 12/22 then they don't play against until 12/26. That game will be the beginning of a 25 game in 48 night stretch leading up to the All-Star break. The cup scheduling has given everybody a bit of a break, but the schedule is about to get real dense.

So far the C's have played 19 games (11-8) against teams at or above .500, the most such games in the league. But things start to ease up a bit now as the C's have the 3rd easiest remaining schedule by opponent record.

Hugo playing so well. Joe kept him in last couple of games over Walsh. I wonder if Hugo is starting soon?

I'm definitely a bigger Simons fan than yourself lol and I'd summarize his career and his skills much more glowingly lol.

Simons still farms a lot of respect around the league for his run when he stepped in for Lillard. Like I get that around here it's barely background chatter but amongst NBA players it's a memorable storyline that players look back on fondly in their careers.

You bring up an interesting point about him learning under Lillard though. He was very impressionable as a guy who played himself into the league the hard way. It likely did hurt his development off ball and as a distributor. He has a real knack for hitting a cutter. Probably could've been something more.

According to Tankathon we have the 3rd easiest schedule remaining.
Tatum or not this team is going to rack up some wins.

Yep that tank is blown up beyond repair.
If JB or White miss a bunch of time it just means more Hugo, and Hugo doesn’t lose.
(Maybe a bit hyperbolic with that last statement but still)

I expect us to get better after the break either way. As a team, and every individual player. Tbd who else gets better. We might still see Simons, Pritchard, and JB struggle adjusting esp Simons but the worst basketballwise is behind us.

Who's going to want us in the playoffs?

Imagine people complaining because the Celtics are the #3 seed in the East with the 3rd easiest remaining schedule doing this without our 1st team all NBA player instead of being the Washington Wizards

Don't have to imagine. Just read any message on this forum and there's a 50/50 chance it's someone being mad that the Celtics won't punt an entire year and light the winning culture of the organization on fire to be able to draft James Wiseman 2.0.

I think we need to take a step back and realize how good our talent is. The fact they Quetta is good, followed by Walsh and Hugo emergence has me thinking that 42-40 preseason pick is gonna be a big over.

I had the Cs at 45-50 wins.

Just have more faith in our players and coach.
