NBA MVP straw poll: Luka? Giannis? Tatum? 100 league insiders make their picks

Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, who is averaging a career-high 30.2 points per game, claimed 47 first-place votes and was on 98 of 100 ballots cast in the 2022-23 debut of ESPN's NBA MVP straw poll, which was conducted from Sunday to Tuesday.

Tatum led the way with 759 total points, followed by Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (36 first-place votes, 687 total points) in second and Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic (10 first-place votes, 392 total points) in third.

Rounding out the top five behind Tatum, Antetokounmpo and Doncic were Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (six first-place votes, 250 total points) and Denver Nuggets center (and reigning two-time NBA MVP) Nikola Jokic, who had one first-place vote and 195 total points.

Tatum, Antetokounmpo, Doncic, Curry and Jokic were the only five players to receive a first place vote.

Others receiving votes included Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant (sixth), Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant (seventh), Williamson (eighth), Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker (ninth), Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid (10th), Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell (11th), Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis (12th), and Gilgeous-Alexander, who, with a lone fifth-place vote, rounded out the poll in 13th place.

I posted these a couple of weeks ago, but obviously it changes constantly. I just it posted in the MVP thread on the GB, but it’s insane so doing it here too.

This is the Celtics net ratings with these players OFF the floor. Not only the fact that a team this talented struggles so much without Tatum, but a gap of 6 to the next closest player is ******* absurd.

I got curious about MVP candidates On/off net rating in general, so i looked up some of the leaders using Bb reference:

Jokic: +23.1
Curry: +18.2
Tatum: +15.1
Morant: +11.8
Zion: +10.3
Davis: +10.2
Embiid: +10.0
Doncic: +7.6
Giannis: +3.7
Booker: +2.9

Jokic really should be an MVP front runner right now. Maybe not the favorite, but up there.

I said it to a few posters earlier, but Jokic has been the best player in the league, again. Him only getting one first place vote in that mvp straw poll is ridiculous lol.

Those look like net on/off numbers to me, ie, compared to the overall team performance. +/- Jokic is +10.5, Tatum is 10.8 (and also plays a lot more minutes).

Edit - never mind you said they were net (my bad), nevertheless the big distinction is Denver is not that good behind their top guy.

And he’s actually having a small dip in production compared to years passed. I think that on top of winning two MVPs without a conference finals appearance hurts where he stands in voter’s eyes but man he’s amazing.

Selfishly hoping this is Tatum’s year (especially since he told Embiid he better win MVP last year, because the future is all him. Hope he’s right!

Cs now 1-8 when they get outscored with Tatum on the floor. Undefeated otherwise.

Wait. If Tatum commonly flips with Brown, and has a huge on/off, does that mean he's a vastly better player than Brown? :)

All the more since Tatum plays with some reserves-heavy lineups.

Tatum averaging 1.39 ppp (96th percentile) on post-ups albeit on fairly low volume of 1.3 per game.
As for volume 1.3 per game doesn't seem too low. Pretty much what lengthy perimeter wings average. You gotta get to the Jokic, Doncic, Embiid, etc. before players start averaging 4 to 5 post-up possessions per game. Even Sabonis only averages 2.

It’s not a slight against Jaylen though, MVP level players have a pretty big edge over anyone.

Tatum starting to really grow into his athleticism out there, whether it’s taking it strong (sometimes, but a growing % of the time) or making athletic plays on the defensive end.
Paul Pierce appreciation society.

So we’re more than a third into the season, and dude is averaging 31/8/4 on a 61% TS, while once again being one of the handful of biggest impact players in the league.

God damn.

30 ppg, 8 rpg, 4 apg, 60% TS% in NBA history:
• Kareem (1972)
• Jordan (1989)
• Lebron (2022)
• Embiid (2022)

Doncic, Embiid, Tatum on pace to join the list.

One thing I noticed was that Tatum has seen a huge surge in assisted baskets, both 2 pointers (51%) and 3 pointers (68%), this season. The last three seasons, when Tatum was hovering around league average or just above it, he was being assisted on between 38-42% of 2 pointers and 46-52% of 3 pointers (the lower limits both coming in that awful 2020-21 season). Tatum himself made huge strides in his game but have to credit Joe and his teammates minus Jaylen Brown for getting him better looks, and Brad for getting him some better teammates who can handle the ball.

That was filthy. Great contest by Giannis too.
