That's definitely not an official list, just what's been reported on Twitter and other internet sources. It's very likely that the Celtics have worked out other prospects as well.

Yes, that's true. But this is a pretty big list - I can't imagine we brought in many more guys than this - especially since the team's focus is on winning a title right now and we only have 1 pick in the draft and it's the 53rd pick. I'm thinking if there's anyone else we worked out, it's only 1 or 2 other guys.

I don't get it. Why don't we get the draft on NBA league pass? There is no legal way for me to watch this.

It's ridiculous. I've had the same gripe for years.

This is the worst draft I've seen in years. There isn't a wing player I feel comfortable drafting in the top 10. Jabari Smith is the only stud in this draft.

I massively disagree with all 3 of those statements.

I still really like Michael Foster Jr. at #53 if he's still there. To me, he's the post player most likely to develop into an Al Horford-type in the NBA (strong, active PF who can dribble, rebound, pass, and hit open outside shots).

IDK, his shooting is pretty questionable and he's one of the worst defenders in the draft.

I probably wouldn't take him - maybe as an UDFA..

Never been an issue for me before because the draft is always during early midsummer celebrations, meaning I watch it later. Too old for that now so I crave a live draft badly. Do you find a way or is the studio-only shows on youtube and whatnot more realistic?

He shot 75% FT and 31.3% 3-PT in the G League this season:

Not great, but pretty good for a 19-year old 6'9 PF right out of high school. He's definitely way, way ahead shooting-wise of where Al Horford was in college.

Foster Jr. also shot well in workouts and NBA Combine scrimmages.

I know I posted before how I didn't want a wing, only a 4 and/or a 5.

I've now shifted my stance.

I'm open to a wing. Why? Clearly we could use a solid wing with some size and scoring punch off the bench. Sure, maybe 1 of Hauser/Begarin/Nesmith/Fitts/Stauskus/Ryan/Thomas could be that guy but the fact is that Udoka as of now is not comfortable putting any of them in the rotation. Why not see if we can strike gold with a 2nd rounder?

Also, I'm willing to roll the dice with this pick on a true PG. Obviously when you watch the finals and you hear all the chatter, having a true floor general who can run the show, facilitate, direct traffic, find the open man, handle the ball is a need. Finding a guy like that in the draft is tough - finding it at 53rd pick is tougher.

I'm also still open to a 4 and/or 5!

Bigs
Yoan Makoundou (PF who can play small ball 5)
Karlo Matkovic (5)
Dominick Barlow (PF who can play small ball 5)
Isaiah Mobley (combo 4 and 5)

Wings
Jules Bernard
Tyrese Martin
Gabe Brown
Julian Champagnie

PG
Ziga Samar (very intriguing player. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being a solid starting PG in this league. Good size at 6'5", a true floor general. Pass first PG whose best skill is creating quality looks for teammates. Also shot over 40% from 3. Had a really good year with a really good assist to turnover ratio, at a young age while playing in Spain's top league which is considered the best pro league in europe. Is he the answer at PG for us? Maybe!)

Here's some reaches. Guys who I think will probably be off the board but definitely worth considering if they fall to us
Kennedy Chandler (PG)
Jabari Walker (4 who can play small ball 5)
Jaylin Williams (5)
Alondes Williams (potential to be a pure PG - probably THE best passer in the draft, but versatility to also play on the wing)
Gabriele Procida (wing)
Keon Ellis (wing)

Grab 1 of them with 53rd pick and grab another one as UDFA and call it a day.

Above all else, we just need talent. Clearly we really only have like 5 or 6 guys (maybe 7) with legit talent on this team who we can count on to win playoff games. 1 of those guys is 36 and only has 1 year left on his contract (al). So we just need to find talent. There is definitely hidden gems in this draft late 2nd round and for UDFA..just need to find them!

If I was the Celtics I would be trying to get Keegan Murray on the Celtics who in my opinion would be a perfect Al Horford replacement and a great team with Tatum, Brown and RW3.

I would be willing to move Smart, others and draft picks to get him.

Edit: At least until I change my mind

that link only shows his stats during the g league "showcase" which was a 13 game stretch towards the end of the season.

If you scroll down on this page you can see his full season stats, which shows 20% from 3 on just 1.4 attempts per game:
https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Michael-Foster-Jr/Summary/126844

Based on this scouting report, clearly defense and shooting are his weaknesses:

Horford is an outlier when it comes to his shooting development. He went from literally never making a single 3 during his first like 6 years in the NBA to becoming a 38% shooter from 3 on good volume. That's an outlier. It's like a 1 in a million case. You can't realistically project that on someone else..

He might be nice, but we need win now players. That should be the priority.

Didn't Brook Lopez have the same trajectory? Also P.J. Tucker attempted 4 threes in college.

Ok so it's happened a few times out of thousands of players. Not something you can bank on or project with any level of confidence.

And with Horford and some of the others who didn't develop an outside shot until 6 or 7 years in the league...but when you're drafting a player (especially a 2nd rounder) you're really only trying to project how good can that player be during their first 3-4 years in the league. Because beyond that, they're on their 2nd contract - probably with a different team..

What they say is that free throw shooting is a better indicator of three point shooting potential than the actual three point shooting %. Lamelo for example was utterly putrid from the three but shot decently from the line (77%) in the NBL. He is currently a superb three-point shooter.

I know we've talked about Barlow a bit, just watching his Pro Day workout vid again:

Man, this dude looks like a 1st round pick to me. The size (6'10" with a 7'3" wingspan) and ability to move as quick and fluid as he does, the ability to handle, drive, shoot. and he just turned 19.

The shot is a little weird looking on the form, but a) it goes in and b) it can be tweaked later on if need be, especially with how young he is. It might a slow-ish release but typically guys that big have more time to get their shot off than smaller guys..

Someone is gonna pick him before us I think. I think he'll go early to mid 2nd round.

But if he's somehow still there at 53, he definitely needs to be considered.

Makoundou and Barlow are my favorites as of now. Both could legit end up being really good NBA forwards.

Post#718 » by Hal14 » Sat Jun 18, 2022 3:26 am

Just watched this full game for Ziga Samar:

2:48 he's a scrapper! Gets in there near the basket, helps out on D and blocks the shot at the rim
3:13 wow, hell of a steal, just goes hard after the ball with tenacity and grit, gets the steal, takes it hard on the break (good but not great speed with the ball in the open floor), then scores at the rim for the and-1
7:07 this is nice. crafty move with the dribble to get into the lane, then he stops, uses an up fake to egt his man into the air, then leans in and makes the scoop shot with left hand
8:00 this is a little thing but I like how he is savvy enough to know JUST how physical/aggressive he can get right here without fouling - when he tries to steal it away from his man. I'm telling you. If he had been just a tad more physical/aggressive here, that's a foul. But if he had been any less physical/aggressive then there's no way he's getting the steal. Although he didn't get the steal on this play, if he plays this type of defense every time, he's going to get his share of steals, no question. I like the tenacity, really getting up on his man, pressuring the ball.
35:38 dude just makes really good decisions with the ball. After getting outlet pass, pushes it really hard on the break to try and get a good look in transition, then sees they don't have numbers so slows it down, then sees a potential secondary break opportunity in the low post, so he is looking at the teammate posting up but sees he isn't really that open while also seeing he's got a teammate top of key who's WIDE open so he quickly hits him with a good pass, and boom, the due nails the 3. Good basketball!
42:06 he's so damn scrappy. Look at him getting in there, going for the ball, knocks it loose and it goes right to a teammate for the steal
49:14 too high on the lob pass here, but I bet Rob woulda caught it!
49:54 look at the help defense here. He's on his man out on the wing, but sees the pass going to the open big man under the basket so he sprints like a bat outta hell to the big - even though Samar is much smaller, he is so feisty that he forces the big to kick the ball back out. It's then rotated to the corner, and Samar again sprints like a bat outta hell to get out there and contest the 3 - he contests it well, and the 3 is no good
50:16 quick pass to teammate who then makes another quick pass to the open shooter for a 3. Give Samar a hocker assist on that one!
1:10:45 beautiful play here. Gets them into their offense with good pace, comes off the screen and drives - then uses a nice hesitation dribble move to get into the lane, then just when the help defender commits (leaving the help defender's man open under the basket), Samar makes the bounce pass right on time and on target for the easy layup
1:27:30 game is on the line, other team up by 1 but opposing PG just goes at Samar, gets by him off the dribble, Samar gets turned around, busts his ass to recover but the dude scores on him at the rim. He's quick and scrappy but just now quite able to prevent this guy from scoring on him
1:29:09 oh man, plays the defense like a fiddle here, perfect execution on the pick n roll perfect pass to lob man for the bucket. This basket put his team up by 1 with just under a minute left!

Bottom line? Pass first floor general, sets his teammates up for quality looks. Facilitates, runs the offense. Pretty good for a guy who just turned 21 and is playing in the best pro league in europe. Scrappy defender. Shot 47% from 3. Could end up being a steal. The last PG to come out of Slovenia. You may have heard of him, his name is Luka Doncic. Not saying Ziga is the next Luka, no way. But has Ziga trained with Luka? Probably. Does Ziga have that same killer/fearless mentality? Maybe.

Most mocks don't even have him getting drafted. So we could possibly get him as an UDFA..

All are still eligible for the draft, except for McCullar and Wong who are returning to college..

Based on this list, it doesn't look like the Celtics are interested in moving up.

For Samar, I found it odd he left his name in the draft when he isn't projected to be drafted. Someone must have made him a promise in the second round. All it takes is one team liking you.
