OT, but I'm joining the MLE Harry Giles For 3 Years club.. even if Kanter opts in and stays, there's room to develop him as a 4/5 with the Williams twins.. Sacramento made a mistake.

MLE for Giles? He hasn't done anything in this league besides get injured. He'll get like the minimum on a one year deal from some crappy team that can give him minutes maybe. He's not nearly the same athlete that flashed in high school. He's had like three major knee surgeries and he's probably toast.

Develop him too. I’m with Andrew and I’m still captain of the Harry Giles bandwagon. He’s still only 21, has range out to the 3 point line, can rebound well and pass well. Foul trouble is absolutely a concern but he’s well worth a MLE flyer next year as Christian Wood prices himself out of MLE contention

Then how about Theis? Is he gone at his bargain $5M? I'm thinking it's crowded as it is if Tacko takes Vincent's role. I think Semi at his super-bargain $1.7M would be more valuable to this team than Giles, too.

Why would he be gone? Kanter is likely gone as he’s probably priced himself out of Boston with his play this year

OP had suggested a scenario where Kanter returns.

I still sign him. Kanter and Theis aren’t long term pieces here. Perfectly adequate stopgaps but their time will come and go

I think they'll be intent on avoiding the tax (assuming line's at $142M) next season to avoid paying the repeater tax in 2022. Much of this depends on what Hayward decides to do. Then what we do with the 3 FRPs.

If Kanter leaves, Hayward opts in (hopefully agrees to an extension), we'd be able to bring back our top 6 -- Kemba, Tatum, Hayward, Brown, Smart, Theis -- and our youngins -- Romeo, Carsen, Grant, Rob -- plus Poirier without a hitch. If we sign our own 1st rounder, there's room for an MLE big for around $5M. 13 guys just below the tax line. Signing more 1st rounders would complicate things.

I think Kanter probably opts out - but could be to take a raise from us to full or 3/4 MLE - he’s been a great fit so far, and only gets more valuable as he grows up on defense. I’m just assuming there’ll be a roster spot and money for Giles, and we can sell him on our developmental environment.

Specifics? I think Poirier and/or Edwards could get dealt with picks to trade up or out - we can’t use three 1sts again. Wanamaker or Waters could be gone. And I love Tacko, but Giles is better - he’s finally had some playing time over the last couple of weeks and his offensive awareness and passing are.. he’d deserve a roster spot.

Legalized sport gambling is a game changer. I totally expect the NBA salary cap to go up. Way up. This is going to make the recent re-signing of JB a steal.

Example of how the league could make money (this article is dated June/2018):

https://www.sbnation.com/2018/6/12/17372548/integrity-fee-legal-sports-gambling

I hear Massachusetts is pushing legislation on legal gambling. About 20 states has legalized gambling and 10 others are thinking about it. And why not? States love another income stream to tax. It is happening and professional teams are going to ring the cash register. (Daryl Morey can keep his job. Just put a kibosh on the tweets). This is going to be a GREAT time to be the owner of a sports franchise. And this is one of the many reasons why I think arguing about the limitation of team payroll is no longer significant.

Kanter's tweets about how much he loves it here make me think that he's thinking of sticking around.

I guarantee he loved Portland. And New York. And OKC, too. To me he's a lot more than an MLE kind of player, was really surprised Boston was able to get him this year even, especially after how he performed in the playoffs last year (with a **** separated shoulder).

He was publicly unhappy as a Knick. (They cut his playing time.) But in general you have a point. :)

If I recall they just lied to him about his playing time. So yeah, just Knick things. Fizdale was clearly an atrocious coach, but at least he has a hot wife.

Why would Kanter ever opt in?

I mean, there is absolutely someone out there who will give him more than what he will make. Someone will give at least full MLE, which would double his pay.

Return to Boston Celtics
