Rookies rarely have that sort of impact. If it happens it will be a nice bonus. But I would not count on it.
Yeah, he'll have done a lot if he even cracks the rotation. Tough for a rookie wing to not be a major liability and he'll have the added obstacles of no summer league and a condensed season/training camp.
To me it's about balancing the lineups. A 3&D rookie will be much more successful in a lineup with Smart/Tatum/Brown/Theis who already know what they're doing out there. He can focus on spacing / shooting / D and that's it. If he's out of place on D, they'll help him, etc. Then keeping Grant or other options on the bench help that unit as well. Having all new guys, rooks and sophs in a lineup would be rough. Obviously, you can stagger, but if you're starting the 5 that most know what to do, you're creating holes in the bench.
It doesn't seem unrealistic to expect a lottery pick to be able to get 10-12 mpg (total - small stretch starting each half) and just shoot the thing and stay in front of his man.
