FWIW I'd be willing to wager our interest in this guy dates to when we were potentially reloading this summer, not rebuilding with 20 guys already under contract.

Datome will sign a 3yrs deal worth $490.180(per year) with the frachise from Massachusets. The #13 from Rome it's a rookie and a freeagent by NBA rules so he can sign for any team but is not conditioned from salary limitations imposed from the NBA's years of experience. The Celtics already have 73mill of salaries so they can only sign minimum contracts. This year Datome earned 250.000 euros (330.000$) after tax. Basically he is goin to earn the same salary but in the NBA, unless the Celtics don't use a salary exception on him, unlikely. The "Azzurro" will renounce to the last year of his deal with Rome, worth 500.000 after tax, betting on himself and in a long career in USA.

Boom! Italian Guy! Adding shooters.

I agree with you, there's no ponit in bringing in one of the best player in market when you're rebuilding...

Ya euro-sarcasm!!

I will be stoked if they sign this fool. You want to build a new, winning culture? Take established players with great pedigrees. Regardless of impact, this guy has played in big-time situations and will be instrumental to raising the "compete" level of this squad.

not to derail the thread, but i could definitely get behind getting those two, and dealing w Demps we could get them cheap. There may be several bargains available after teams finish reshuffling their rosters.

Love the Datome signing as well, not clear to me that it is official yet however

If it is a rookie free agent deal most are 3 years, but years 2 and 3 are not guaranteed.

Not to temper the Gigi enthusiasm, but this article was posted on page 4 of this thread just about 3 weeks ago. That being said, I still believe Gigi will be ours. Just waiting for trades to go through/roster spots to be cleaned up.

I know I didn't post it as new but as a response to how much he was reported to be paid.I then posted again saying it was old

Gotcha fellah. I can't imagine that Datome would actually be signing with us for the minimum, which is another reason why I don't expect this to be formalized for some time, but I would love it if the cited article becomes reality.

I was going to come on here and call him the next Jiri Welsch but i just got done with a youtube video on him and he's tall as hell and can shoot the ball. He's mobile as hell. Very interesting. I'm quite shocked actually. Looking at his build and length, he reminds me of a Tayshawn Prince body type but who can actually shoot the ball. he may be a hair taller.

i have to say im thrilled at the prospect of getting a player like this for cheap. his euro clips remind me of Duke days of JJ Redick when the dude could score on anyone.

Thanks Justin33, I hadn't seen that and stand corrected. I'd still bet we have too much consolidating at this point to do any adding, but we'll see.

Is it fair to say "thats where the comparison ends"?

If he could play like Melo, we would really have something!

Anyway...I'm all for having the token Euro player here in Boston...Who knows maybe he emerges into a poor man's Mano Ginobli?

That would give Sir Charles Barkley a new battle cry!...... Gigi-Datomi! :)
