Tatum is the best Celtics prospect I have seen since Bird, and one of the two best Boston sports prospects I have seen since then. The other is Gronkowski, and that was only starting in his second training camp.

Barring injury, there is not one chance in one thousand that Ben Simmons ends up better. That's just free money. Will also be better than Pierce, Melo, TMac and Vince.

Coming from the ultimate realist, btw. Should have been obvious very early on. For his part, while I am happy with him as the 3rd pick in 2016 and happy with his progress, Jaylen doesn't even rate in this conversation.

Curious to hear your more detailed thoughts on Jaylen.

Do you think he's really not going to be that good, or do you just think Tatum is going to be SO good that it isn't even fair to compare Brown to him?

More the latter. No shame in not being a future superstar. That’s a short list. But Jaylen also doesn’t have the same tools in his box. Much more limited in his skill set, IMO.

And no shame in being wrong about Jaylen Brown.

Just like I was off in my assessment of Tatum being the 6th best prospect in his class. Never been so happy to be wrong about a prospect.

Larry Bird and Reggie Lewis. Let's hope Brown has a longer career than Lewis. RIP.

It's funny cause everyone wanted us to trade everything for George or Butler. & I think we wound up with our own Jimmy Buckets & PG13.

I know those 2 aren't a thing & don't have a name & are on separate teams, but just saying looking back it's funny.

Top 3 Picks Who Won with the Team That Drafted Them, 1990s and 2000s:

• 1997, Duncan (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014)
• 2003, Lebron* (2016)
• 2011, Kyrie (2016)
• 2016, Brown (2024)
• 2017, Tatum (2024)

*Lebron was a returnee.

It was more common in the 80s.

Only looked through post-merger era:
• 1979, Magic (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988)
• 1980, McHale (1981, 1984, 1986)
• 1981, Thomas (1989, 1990)
• 1982, Worthy (1985, 1987, 1988)
• 1984, Hakeem (1994, 1995)
• 1984, Jordan (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998)
• 1987, Robinson (1999, 2003)

.505 TS% and .535 TS% respectively in the finals, so make of it what you will. One of the two had to win the FMVP so it went to Jaylen but honestly they were both underwhelming. FMVP should've been Al Horford.

Jaylen is the least skilled of these 5 guys but is closest in talent level to Vince so I wouldn't dismiss him so easily until he plateaus. In the long run he could be better than Tatum because of his agility and strength and defensive prowess - I seriously doubt it but you never know.

That said, I knew Tatum was a grand slam homerun draft pick 5 minutes into first SL game. I said it here at the time and will keep saying it over and over. This guy is the future and the present. He is our franchise player. This great season we just had was all about Tatum from day 1 - he was an impact player even when he was marginalized in the offense.

This post aged better than most of mine.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."
