Looks like this is how we're rolling for bigs this year.

I like the signing but I see all of them as mostly centers. Is there a power forward in the bunch. I know most nights Hayward/Tatum will be the four but what if the Celtics need to go big?

I expect to see a good deal more of Semi at 4 this year.

I'm thinking Tacko's expectations may have Fallen with these signings.

Senegal isn't one of the seven options for Diplomacy. :)

Boston Celtics branded Diplomacy.
Mind you, it worked better with Baynes in the mix.

Adam Himmelsbach has an article up about Poirier:

Celtics forward Guerschon Yabusele, who is also from France, said he has known Poirier for about 10 years. They have faced each other several times, and Yabusele said Poirier’s improvement in recent years has been obvious.
“He got stronger,” Yabusele said. “He has better hands. His confidence is different. He sets the screen and rolls fast to the rim, he has the capability to grab rebounds, and is a good shot blocker. He’s able to finish at the rim strong and all the little things we can use. He played this season in Euroleague and he was playing really good, too. So I know he’s more mature, more prepared, and definitely better. So I really think he can help the team.”

Celtics representatives saw Poirier play in person more than 10 times over the last two years, including when his team matched up in 2018 against the Turkish club Fenerbahce, which then featured Wanamaker.
One league source who is familiar with Poirier’s game said he did not start playing basketball until he was 17 years old, and acknowledged that as recently as four years ago “he was not that good.” But since then he has combined his obvious physical tools with a better understanding of the game, and he has become more of a force.

He is a good rim runner and is active in pick-and-rolls, and he should give the Celtics some of the rim protection they will be losing with the departures of Horford and Baynes.
Poirier is officially listed at 6-11, but in Europe — unlike in the NBA — those heights are usually measured while not wearing shoes. In the US, he could be listed at 7-1, a source said.

On Tuesday, Yabusele’s eyes went wide as he considered Poirier’s imposing size.
“He’s a tall guy and he can jump,” Yabusele said. “The way he finishes at the rim sometimes, the way he’s strong with the ball, it’s really something that not all the big men have. To be able to be really tough with the ball and finish strong and go to the line and make the free throws, it’s a plus.”

Man, that measuring players height while wearing shoes is the dumbest thing. I'm surprised they don't measure players weight while they're carrying their gym bag.

Maybe in some different sort of reality, Yabs will show some improvement? And together with Poirer actually help anchor our second unit?

We can then call them "The French Connection"!

Get your capes out super hero fans.. :D

I hope “the French” isn’t code for can’t play in NBA.

Theis has turned into a quality rotation player addition for low cost. I doubt Poirier lights the world on fire, but is it really that much to ask to believe he can replace Baynes' line of:

16 MPG, 5.6 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 0.7 BPG, 47% FG%

I love Baynes but that's not a high bar to hurdle over. I think our bigs as a whole this year will be stronger, hit the glass more, finish at the rim better, but probably give up a fair bit relative to last year defensively and as passers.

Overall, I think we have a number of NBA guys who can fill in at the 5 now. Brad will mix and match like he did with Zeller, Sullinger and Olynyk prior to Horford's arrival. That doesn't sound sexy but it can get the job done.

America need to realize quickly that any player playing the Euroleague and performing as much as Poirier did is enough to never thinking about making him play SL!
The level of competition that he's used to play is 100 times better than the best G-League team has.

But the reason why he will not play SL is because he will be playing the World Cup with France this summer and the groupe stage before the competition starts soon
Lol ok. If you say so.

So does this mean Robert Williams is back to the end of the bench as a third string center? Wished they signed a true 4 instead (Jamychal Green), but maybe this could turn out to be a pleasant surprise ala Theis.

The problem isn't the "french" part but being compared to someone else. Remember Harold "Baby Jordan" Miner?

Kobe Bryant did not make it until people stopped calling him the "next Jordan" and instead started calling other players the "next Kobe." When you're being compared to any player, even a hall of fame player, it means you don't have an identity worthy of being taken at face value yet.

TP started the hype in 2001, then Bobo and Pietrus in 2003, then Turiaf, Beaubois, Mahinmi, Batum.
We had a hype, but the last ones were not as promising as the ones cited before !

Next generation is gold : Hoard (2 way contract with the Blazers, should have stayed one more yr in WF), Pons ( a physical freak from Tennessee), Maledon (top 5 next yr), Hayes (top 10 next yr), Cazalon 1st round next yr), ....
Its just starting for real for us now we know the path, and the passion and the players are here

Showing me what? You called out American/other basketball fans for being idiots for thinking that a 25 year old guy who has played summer league TWICE WITHOUT making an NBA roster is above playing summer league.

Now I'm not saying he has no talent or that he might have not improved since his previous summer league experience but for you or anyone to say hes above summer league play...that's nonsense

Not even close. Pekovic was heavy, slow, not really mobile, but with great hands and really good post-up game, really old-school type of player. Poirier is not even close to him in terms of post-up skills and touch around the rim but he is way more mobile, a far better athlete and a much better pick and roll target.

The only similarity is that both are European bigs who are only efficient close to the basket, but other than that-not really alike.

They both look a bit like General Zod.
