I am thinking the tandem of Theis and Kanter is okay at center. Not great but okay and improves with the return of Williams. But we don't have a real power forward. Looking at who is available. How about:

Smart, Poirier to Orlando for Aaron Gordon.

Gordon is have a down year but is a stud and only 24. (Younger than Smart). Golden State passed on Gordon for Russell so their price should be lower. Ainge might even be able to extract a second rounder in the deal.

I'd rather keep smart than Aaron Gordon but I agree with the center spot being just ok. Nobody has what smart has so to me he is off limits unless a huge upgrade

I'm legitimately curious, what does Capella do that is that much of an upgrade from Theis? Can he defend Embiid / Giannis / Davis / etc better? I was on board the Capella/Turner/etc train for a a while, now I'm not so sure what the real upgrade is, esp when you consider cost. But, I haven't watched him play but once this year, and that game was underwhelming, so small sample size and all.

But, overall, I think I'd rather upgrade with a tall swing player than a true center.

Yes, he’s significantly better vs Embiid. Here are there last three matchups:

1/2/20, PHI @ HOU

Embiid: 20-12-3-2-1 on 7-17 shooting, -4
Capela: 30-14-1-1-1 on 12-16 shooting, +10

10/30/17, PHI @ HOU
Embiid: 22-9-5-2-1 on 9-12 shooting, +17
Capela: 12-15-2-1-1 on 4-6 shooting, +6

10/25/17, HOU @ PHI
Embiid: 21-6-3-1-2 on 8-13 shooting, -1
Capela: 16-20-2-1-4 on 7-9 shooting, +9

He is a massive upgrade on Theis. Massive.

Not saying you are wrong, because i'm nearly 100% sure you are right, but why would a team trying to win a championship this year trade the much better player for 2 much worse players and a middle to late round pick? It all doesn't make sense. What motivation do the rockets have?

For a package centered around Smart and a pick I might be able to be talked into a Capela deal but I'm not sure.

Agreed there— the theory is that they desperately need a wing [RoCo] and that Theis+RoCo > Capela. Personally not sure if I buy it.

It'd be super interesting to see. Basically, is an adequate center enough, if you have enough stud wings/swings? I'm just not sure RoCo is good enough. That to me is more the problem, not the dropoff from Capela to Theis. I still feel like you need a little more height, but skilled height. Swap Roco for Siakam and you're in business - not that you could get him for anything the Rockets would give up.

That said, I would probably still do that Capela trade as well since we do have the wings/shooting.

Curious how that deal would look.

Edwards, semi, poirier, boston first, houston first to minny

Roco and theis to houston

Capela to boston?

Sign water, use buyout market i guess for a backup pf?

Kemba/wannamaker/waters
Brown/smart/langford
Hayward/green
Tatum/grantw/
Capela/kanter/robwilliams

Well short on qualified pfs and a good backup sf and pf still.

For Houston? Covington/Theis probably is better than Capela..

For us, is Covington/Capela better than Hayward?

Edwards, Semi, Poirier, Theis, 1st for Capela? I don’t like it. Take out Edwards, Semi, Theis - put in Kanter and Wanamaker - does that work?

I was listening to Nate Duncan's mock trade deadline. There was a convoluted 4 team trade (which is probably just too hard in reality) but for Boston, the takeaways were;

Out : Theis, Sex Pants, Milwaukee 1st rounder
In : Capella

Yay or Nay?

Would toss in the Mem pick too, to be honest

There was a small amount of discussion around our pick, but no one seemed to think the Memphis pick would be needed.
Still, get your point, in terms of how you value this.

It was complex. Minny, Houston, Boston and OKC all involved.
Minny ended up with three (crappy) firsts. OKC got some cap relief. Houston got under tax, swapped Capella plus expirings for Theis and Covo. They'd also then have 4.5 million to spend on buyout market.

They were also factoring in a desire by Houston to get under the tax, due to management. (Nene and Green were also outgoings).

Ultimately in terms of on court it became
Theis, Covington and a 4.5 million buyout slot

Whether thats better than Capella is eye of the beholder I guess.

We literally just lost Theis, Poirier and the 1st.

Semi was mentioned, but not included.
Four team trades never happen, so take it with a grain of salt, but the Boston part of the premise was pretty interesting.

Oh, that was the whole deal? Tempting definitely. Theis’ three-point shot goes a long way to make him valuable, and he’s actually got a higher block percentage than Capela.. he’s also a better free throw shooter.. and has good chemistry with his teammates. I guess I’d rather have Theis, Rob Williams and a 1st than Rob Williams and Capela..

Hayward+ late first for Gordon/Bamba if Orlando wants to get out of contract is a good trade for both teams - assuming Celtics fear Hayward opting out and want to strengthen PF position. I think Hayward is better than Smart but Smart contract and age is better fit. Orlando gets best player but rebalances it’s roster and probably solidifies at least 7th spot in playoffs. Celtics downgrade in talent now but get security of players under contract for 2 years and also rebalance roster. Gordon could be amazing as 5th starter without burden or need to be a scorer.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Aaron Gordon and Mo Bamba contribute nothing to the Orlando Magic. Nothing. Why is it a good idea to bring them to Boston? It isn't.

not a fan of either player. Bamba I'd take a chance on if the price was right. his length is freakish. if he can develop even slightly he could be a difference maker. worth a gamble.

That franchise BTW (Orlando) is so poorly run. Not trying to sound like an arrogant A-Hole, but in knowing somewhat what goes into the job, I'm fairly certain I could do a better job getting that team back into contention then what is in place. they need to tear down hard and fast....

Vuc....gone. Gordon gone. Fournier gone. Fultz gone. etc etc. get on the phone, bring in expiring deals, young players, and as many picks as possible.

I wanted Gordon at one point (never Bamba). The idea of him playing under Brad, without the other bigs in the way was intriguing. But, then I happened to watch 3 or 4 Orlando games and he doesn't impact the game at all. Just no way I would trade anyone on our team that matches salary for him.
