The Mazzulla defensive system is soft contests on midrange shots to encourage the other team to shoot from 12-20 feet so we exchange 2s for 3s.

The problem is against NBA shooters they can hit a ton of near-open middies if you are gonna defend so soft like that.

I think that we can play pretty good with 3 Starters, most nights.
Split them for Back-to-Backs.

Sure. Sometimes it doesn’t work though. And just in general some people are like, “defend to get stops not to suggest what shots the other team should shoot.” It’s kind of like how Bud didn’t guard Grant Williams in the 2022 game 7 vs the Bucks, he wanted to pick the shooter and it backfired. So it can work, it can not work too
