So the league wanted to stop excessive spending and promote a balance, but when does that become a detriment? Bad teams with cheap owners and weak GM's will always be around. So what's wrong with a team becoming a dynasty for a few seasons? The Spurs are a solid organization with a great player. Wouldn't the league want them to eventually become the face for a few years? They need to focus on curbing the egregious tanking that takes place each season by the same culprits. I wouldn't want to play for the Wizards or Pelicans if I was Flagg, but that's because they put themselves where they are each season.

The C's are the closest thing to a home team that Flagg has. So by LBJ's theory, the league will find a way for him to be drafted by Boston.

Silver believes NFL-style parity will lead to higher TV ratings.

The worst thing for the league would be contraction, if some small market teams can't make it financially.

It wasn't that long ago that some teams were in the red.

Stern was the opposite. Starting with Bird and Magic, he wanted dynasties, especially by the big market teams and superstar rules for officiating.

Small-market teams wouldn't be shut down, but they might be sold.

"He lived with a Melrose Place star while the show was becoming a sensation. He learned teamwork from a soccer legend. He was knocked out of soccer’s Elite Eight by Rutgers and Alexi Lalas.

A look back at Bill Chisholm’s Dartmouth soccer days helps to explain why those within the Celtics consider him a natural cultural fit.

Richie Graham calls him Billy.

The good news is it sounds like Chisholm is a guy who wants to win. We just have to hope he takes this personally.

Wyc Grousbeck says ‘former partners’ will be involved with new Celtics ownership group
"We've got more capital coming in than we even have room for."

Wyc Grousbeck, the Celtics’ current governor and front-facing owner, shared that “former partners” have recently joined Chisholm’s ownership group, including “most” members of the current ownership group.

“I think this can be a really positive transformation. It’s going to happen this summer, but it’s definitely going to happen,” Grousbeck told WBZ’s Dan Roche. “We’re like, oversubscribed. We’ve got more capital coming in than we even have room for. So, an appreciation for all of those people who are believing. A lot of former partners are coming in now, which is a new change and that’s great. So, it’s the old and the new coming in, mixing together.

“But there’s a lot of new energy and excitement. We’ve been in 22 years, my group, and now most of us are going to be in going forward, including me. I’m doubling down on all of my stuff and putting everything I’ve got to stay in for a while.”

Grousbeck didn’t share which other members of the current ownership group would be involved with the new ownership group, but there is one that’s already known. Granite CEO Rob Hale will remain on board when Chisholm takes over, after he reportedly showed interest in purchasing the team.

As for which other current investors might stay on with Chisholm’s group, co-owner Steve Pagliuca indicated that he wasn’t going to be a part of ownership moving forward when he lost the bidding process.

Hey that’s great I’ll take it.

Also people can see my posts earlier in this thread, Chisholm is probably putting a lot less into this sale than is usually discussed.

If people remember, the non-Grous portion of the team was going to be sold at an even higher $7.1B valuation, which at this point is a smaller proportion of the team being sold with many of the non-Pag minority owners coming back.

So presumably the people who sign up to be part of the ownership group would have to know going in that the Celtics will maintain a high payroll and pay hundreds of millions a year in luxury taxes for a year or two?

Because that would be part of the financial due diligence a big transaction like this would require.

Fans see how much all these rich people are paying, $6 billion for the club. But some of these rich people may only sign on if it makes financial sense, not just out of fandom, wanting to keep the team in the contention window, regardless of how much it costs.

What did the current owners pay for the team some 20 years ago? A fraction of this proposed sales price, resulting in a 30x appreciation in franchise value as determine by this sales price.

It's unlikely that 20 years from now, any NBA franchise will be worth 20-30x what it costs to acquire. Maybe not even 10x or 5x.

Of course, you might have said that 20 years ago but here we are.

The Celtics sold for roughly 14 times what they were bought for, and there was nothing close to a 2nd apron back then. So we're in uncharted territory.
A few days after the sale, quietly, Wyc gave future cover for the Bill Chisholm group saying, "Nobody will. I predict for the next 40 years of the CBA no one is going to stay nobody is going to stay in the second apron more than two years.”
Grousbeck cited the basketball penalties for keeping together as a bigger problem than the financial penalties. IMO the Celtics will try to sneak below the 2nd apron and it will involve Holiday or Brown.
Brad Stevens on fans who want the Celtics to tank: "I don’t think they’ll like me all that much then."

this is posturing during the acquisition process -- remember that the proposed sale structure hasn't yet been approved by the league. Wyc and his finance bros would like it to sail through

once it goes through and everyone is in for what they are going to be in for, that's when they start tracking their investment and we have to worry about The Apron boogeyman costing us a rotation player or three
