Thought the first year salary would have been a little lower or a little higher, either would be in Boston's self-interest. Unclear where they go now. Don't know their internal projections for the cap and tax increases, or their revenues.
Marcus Morris is good enough as a veteran to pay a little luxury tax - being about 3 million over means about 4.5 million in tax payments - going by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxury_tax_(sports)#National_Basketball_Association_(NBA) - at the end of the year - but it starts the clock toward paying the repeater tax a year early. He can help us win a championship - so moving him to save money would depend on the value coming back in return.

This works in a vacuum but I don't see Morris being happy being the 4th wing on the depth chart (which doesn't even include developing Semi). I think he actually said earlier in the off-season that he was concerned about this. I don't see him being someone like Baynes who is happy playing 30 min one night, 5 min another and taking 2 shots total. If he is fine with it though, then that would be great.
Considering I was amazed at the fact that 80% of the time he touched the ball, he shot it, I wouldn't mind letting him go. He's not nearly as good as he thinks he is. A salary dump followed by Bird signing would be awesome.
Good assessment:

It's up to Danny, as I wrote a few times already, wouldn't mind developing Bird and Semi instead of keeping Morris considering he's gone at the end of the year. Wonder what DA is thinking about it.

A little more context. This would make Marcus the 105th highest player in the league right between Zack Randolph and Patty Mills. According to HoopsHype
Jordan Walsh > Lonnie Walker and Charles Bassey

Surprised we paid this much. Could mean one of Terry or Kyrie is gonzo next offseason.

Great day! Marcus Smart is worth every penny of this contract. Danny said it all: Smart's toughness and intensity are unmatched and unwavering. He is a key player in the Celtics' inexorable march to banner 18.

They must have a reason to do this. It's a tiny adjustment to make for absolutely no reason.
There's got to be some way it fits in with either something they plan to do, or how the other salaries on the team change in the coming seasons.
Crap. I've got some work ahead of me.
Fark.
As of right now we're over the tax line by 3.047746
Rozier makes 3.050390
That can't be it, but it's quite coincidental.
We’re not trading Rozier.

Great to see smart extended.
If he signed QO he would definitely get more next season from some desperate team...
Remember posey and TA? We were too cheap then....we are a contender, cant afford to lose key role players...
Posters saying you dont overpay roleplayers? That is true if you are building a team, we already have our stars, now we need to keep the team intact...
Besides just trade yabs and Nader with a 2nd rounder and cash to team under cap and we are under tax...

Morris is a very good player, to be clear - very good defensively, and he joined the team late and had some injury issues that probably screwed with his offensive judgment and timing. He also chucked shots sometimes because he was playing with teammates who needed someone to chuck shots. How he sees himself at this point, I don’t know - he could be back on a Baynes-style deal - a couple summers back, he looked like the kind of role player who would get a fat raise in salary. Now with the market tightening and correcting, he looks like he deserves Baynes money. But I could see him liking an opportunity elsewhere..
They could wait to see how the team gels in preseason, and how much Yabu and Williams and Theis are able to contribute as frontcourt players, Jaylen, Jayson as scorers at the 3/4.

explain how I'm wrong, so far you've added nothing.tombattor wrote:captain green wrote:Valid wrote:Yeah because I'm sure you know more than the best GM in the league. lol.
I know it's a bad deal don't have to be an expert to know that. What is the upside to overpaying when we had leverage? Where is the upside to losing depth? Where is the upside to being a tax repeater now ? And finally what is the upside to his game improving?
Because everything you said here is wrong.
