Theis is not really a 3 pt. threat as he shot 28% and 29% from 3 the last two seasons, which blows.
Well, Grant Williams, Nesmith (according to what they say about him in practice), and Pritchard are the 3 pt. threats who will now see time off the bench. White is basically a complete player minus the 3 point shot (31.4% is generally below what you'd want from a 3 point shooter). This could work. A lot is riding on Grant continuing to hit corner 3's while obviously expecting Nesmith and Pritchard to be able to deliver 3 point makes, and of course White "fitting in."

5 roster spots. Time to work your magic and find some roughies Brad.
One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.

The improvement is adding a 4th Big (Theis) so if one of Rob Williams, Al Horford or Grant Williams is out they still have some size and muscle (Kanter was a defensive liability for all his offensive around the basket prowess).
Also, Derrick White is an All-Around better player than Josh Richardson, although in the short time he was here I grew to really like Josh Richardson, who is a better 3 point shooter than Derrick White.

Best big man rotation since we had all of Horford Baynes and Theis?

Theis is a 35% 3 pt shooter playing with Tatum. That doesn’t blow. Nesmith is shooting 7% last 10 games and 20% for season with nobody trying to contest any of them. That actually blows.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

I like White. Wanted a something more than Theis for white but what are you going do with him and White. Later. Bench needs work. Need a shooter in the buyout market if there is any.

We know Nesmith has been a clear failure in his on court play. My statement above referenced his profiency in practice, for whatever that's worth.
As for Theis, you're ignoring this season and last season. So be it. I limited my comment to the two most recent seasons. We can always hope for a return to form.

Re: Official Celtics 2021-22 Season Thread, 2nd Edition
Whites must've been on the radar since the Team USA team. Love the patience. They really got THEIR guy at the deadline. A closing lineup of Smart White Brown Tatum RW3 is going to compete with anyone. The Theis heist is nice. Danny boy will back up the tRob protecting the rim, leading the 2nd unit defense and running the pnr. Pritch and Nesmith will finally get good runs as they did in the summer. I expect they'll be better. So the task is now to shore up the point, wing and front court with the right vets that want a ride on the C train. I stand by my preseason prediction of a 3 seed. And I'm upping it with a date in the ECF with the Bucks. Get it on!!!
That's the Way of the World

Don't forget about the possibility of Hauser from downtown. He could easily be a guy to come in and hit 3 or 4 treys a game.

So I like Derrick White but I also really like what Josh Richardson was doing for us....
And my honest question is how is Derrick White an upgrade over JRich....
and was that upgrade really worth a FRP
I'm really wrestling with that...Our bench is gonna take a huge hit without JRich.
Just not understanding. I'm not anti DW....really I'm not but how much better is he than JRIch if any

White is an upgrade over Josh because White is a better basketball player.
Let's just put it this way, Derrick White is an impact player.
Josh is basically a role player.

They both seem like role player/spot starters to me but I hope I'm wrong.
I do like how DW attacks the basket tho...
On a side note, unless Pritchard and Nesmith really step up, our outside shooting is gonna be really sketchy

It's always going to be sketchy as long as Smart is on the court.
Tatum, Brown, and White will not be left open because they can make shots from beyond the arc.
But Smart and Rob are not really 3-point threats.
Only way the outside shooting will be lethal is if the Celts have 4 outside threats and only 1 non-shooter on the court.

Re: Official Celtics 2021-22 Season Thread, 2nd Edition
So a lot happened today. When I first read the details of the trade I was kinda like "Huh?...that the deal?" It kinda felt lateral to me. Plus I was a fan of Josh. Thought he might have played himself into sticking around. Then again, considering we got him for basically nothing in the Moses Brown trade, flipping him here was always kinda "found money".
I don't know that they added the shooting in Derrick White specifically that people wanted but he was probably the best talent we could get for what we were willing to give up. Allan pointed out that his contract made him a bigger better trade piece that Josh and that's not nothing. It also potentially makes Marcus a trade piece as well. The general consensus around is that White is actually a better PG in terms of the duties than Marcus while also being a top notch defender as well. Perhaps in the future Marcus is the one who gets traded for shooting. It gives Brad options in this regard.
The Schroder/Marcus backcourt pairing never really worked out with Schroder being so ball-dominant and a ballstopper. The big thing to watch will be how a Smart/White pairing works out. To many Marcus fans (of which I am one), a big part of why we're seeing the best version of Marcus these days is because he was finally handed the reins and allowed to be the main facilitator (as much as he can be with the Jay's out there) after years of playing next to smaller PGs. White, at the same height and a better passer than Schroder (and perhaps Marcus too) now enters the fray. Even though he may not start, how these two mesh in crunchtime will say a lot about how this team fares right here, right now. Does Marcus take this move personal, or can they work out a symbiotic relationship? Him and the Jays and Ime all know each other from Team USA so there is familiarity there which no doubt played a big part in him coming here.
In bringing Theis back, it's clear Brad is trying to undo almost everything Danny did before he left. He clearly hated the mnoves Brad made. Theis is the backup for now but if Al is waived after next year and we're left with just his 14M salary, Theis assumes that role in the lineup. The War on Theis is back on baby! Between Theis and White, the onboarding during a condensed stretch run to the playoffs should be lessened and that's favorable.
Finally, clearing our Romeo, Dennis, and Josh give Nesmith, PP, and maybe even Hauser a REAL opportunity and pathway to contribute to this team. This is a huge vote of confidence especially for Nesmith who sorely needed it. If the additional shooting comes from one or more of these 3, that would be big.
We stay under the tax and we gave up some guys but I still feel like this shows a vote of confidence in this team. I think we are definitely a better defensive team now than when we woke up this morning. And that's good because Brooklyn and Philly made a huge move today. White's not statistically a good shooter though his in-between game is pretty good. I hope he can boost up his shot a little bit with the open looks he'll get. I'm not expecting much in the buyout market but we'll see what happens.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

Yeah, it would be interesting how the team plans against the eventual defensive strategy of the good teams to just pack the paint, show two against Tatum, and dare the others to shoot or drive into traffic.
Last season, White shot 37.27% on open & wide open shots. Not awful. He was 48.8% from the corners (this season it's gross!). 37% on catch-and-shoot. Again, not bad. But those numbers have gone down this season. Your guess is as good as mine as to why.
One thing I know that hasn't worked when teams defend the Cs this way is standing around the perimeter with little to no movement and hoping Tatum or Brown makes something out of nothing while taking late-clock contested shots.
