If you’re looking for something to kind of blend you from another genre and into rap you can’t go wrong with The Score from the Fugees and also Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Lots of 80’s and 90’s rap sampled some of the old old soul, R&B, and funk classics (and lesser known songs from those genres too. De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Boogie Down Productions (and KRS-One then as a solo artist) are probably my 3 favorite from that era. The Roots are amazing at this too but more in live instruments and musical blending instead of as many samples. Black Star as well and Mos Def is my fav out of that duo.

Newer style… I don’t really care for most of it. He’s not new anymore but “newer” I do like Anderson .paak a lot and Malibu is a classic album. I like Ventura a lot too and no complaints about Oxnard either.

One even more obscure recommendation for me is K’naan (dusty foot philosopher probably my fav album of his and the live version too) and K-os (Atlantis is my fav album of his.

Didn’t really list too much stuff I figured you probably already heard lol but if you just want general hip hop recommendations then Jay-z, Biggie, J Cole, old Kanye, and Kendrick Lamar are musts without going too far back in time.

Kanye’s first few are works of art in my opinion, but I can’t listen to him anymore. When I know something about people, it’s hard to listen to their stuff, knowing that it will be supporting them. I know he has mental health issues, but he doesn’t need more money he needs more help. Dang Kanye!

I can usually separate it as I still listen to MJ lol and I know there’s tons of people I listen to that aren’t saints (just maybe aren’t as high profile as Kanye) so have a hard time distinguishing between the sins I’m ok with and those I’m not. For me it’s more his style changed too much. Too many collaborations with new rappers I don’t really care for either.

"The Rub" from Brooklyn Radio is a fantastic hip hop resource. They are a couple of DJ's that put together mixtapes for each year from 1979 onwards. I downloaded this stuff years ago, and I am happy to see that it is still available. It looks like they have stopped at 2017 (though I never bothered downloading any of the ones after the year 2000 to be honest).

You can stream them directly from the website or download the mp3, the problem with the download option is that once they get to the late 80's onwards, the mixes are usually 2-3 hours long without individual track breaks (so you basically download a 3 hour mp3 for a lot of them).

1987 to 1993 is perfection. They do East Coast and West Coast tracks too, which is good.

I wouldn’t say go to, but my fav is really 90s music (mainly R&B), from many genres! Go to artists are Patti Labelle, Prince, and Teddy P. What I listen to depends on mood, what I haven’t heard in a while, or my favorited songs (mix of any and everything)!

Honestly, I listen to something different throughout the day. Mostly songs I know, but it can be from any time. I can go for hours on favorite artists here and there, but mainly it’s some of this and that.

I don’t know what happened to me but after 2010, I started listening to fewer news songs. If TikTok or IG isn’t pushing it in the background, I would know little new stuff, except for artists that I already know and like. I am going in on Rap but I’m choosing to do that, forced myself to try it (enjoying it, wth was I thinking!).

Edit: I hope I explained that it’s not go to in that I play it all the time, I have many playlists but I really listen to the favorites/liked playlist, I think that’s what they’re called, I just say echo/Siri play music I like.

Even if you only end up liking a few artists or songs in the end, worth it lol. You might find out you like specific producers even like Quest or 9th Wonder. Some have r&b influences, some jazz influences. There's just so much, you're bound to like something. You don't even need lyrics to enjoy hip hop.

While I primarily listen to pre-2005 hip hop and fairly extreme and progressive metal, two bands that I have loved pretty much my entire life are Queen and Van Halen. They were my first two favourite bands when I was probably 6 or 7 years old in the mid 80's, and have remained two of my favourite bands to this day. I went down a YouTube rabbit hole while procrastinating from work the other day, and found two of my favourite live performances that I used to have on VHS, and hadn't seen in ages.

5150 was the first album I ever bought with my own money. And this version of the title track is fantastic, I wish the Live Without a Net concert was available as an audio album to buy/stream.

Other than Under Pressure, I could never really get into any of the tracks off Hot Space, which is really the only Queen album I could say that about as I love pretty much every other album. But this live version of Staying Power is about a hundred times better than the album version as they ramped up the tempo. It is rocking and funky as hell.

So this YouTube rabbit hold got me thinking that if Doc Brown gave me the Delorian and I could go back and see any live show, which ones would I pick? These are a few that came to mind:

Van Halen - the 5150 tour above from 1986. My favourite Van Halen album, Sammy Hagar fit the band like a glove after joining, and Eddie was probably at the peak of his powers.

Queen - any tour from the early 80's, but being at Wembley for the Magic Tour shows would probably be the pick

Megadeth - Rust in Peace/Countdown to Extinction era, the best line up the band ever had, and my two favourite albums

Beastie Boys - Ill Communication/1994

Wu Tang - Forever/1997

Pink Floyd - early 70's, Live at Pompeii era (1972 maybe?)

Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same (1973 maybe?)

A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul - 1996

Live at Pompeii is a definite. And I would love to have seen the Doors before Jim went too far off the rails. The Clash late 70s, early 80s and I have seen Adam Ant 7-8 times, but never Adam and the Ants.1980-81.
