Good deal, good player, good value. Good negotiating by Ainge.
I am getting annoyed at the “leverage” people, because they don’t know how to negotiate. You don’t abuse people in negotiations. The object is to make both parties happy and satisfied.
Why? Because that way you can get more deals done. You abuse another Party in negotiations, they won’t deal with you again. Also, they may feel cheated and not honor the contract.
Take it from someone who negotiates. You have to create value on both sides. Ainge does that in all his deals.

SMTBSI wrote:Darth Celtic wrote:SMTBSI wrote:As I've said a bunch of times in this thread: totally possible. I actually think we're more likely to be buyers at the deadline than sellers.
But why close off options?
Because having a 3m contract to trade out to be buyers with at the deadline is more important than a small chance to save a few million and giving up an asset to do it and nobody is worth signing in the buyout market.
Salary dumping with this team, and what it is, makes no sense. Even if you feel T Zeller is better than Yabs, it doesn't matter. Think of Yabs as a 5m (value you can trade him for, more even i think) trade exemption instead of a raw project big man then.
You're suggesting a false choice. Paying Smart 300k less in year one preserves both of those options. There would be no need to choose, until it's actually the deadline and we know what we want to do.
I am not arguing that we must move Yabs. I'm saying there's no reason to intentionally reduce your flexibility earlier than you have to. We have easy ways to be buyers at the deadline. It's just common sense to also set up some easy ways to duck the tax, if the first half of the season goes in such a way that we decide we want to.
And we were so close to being able to do so organically. It wasn't like we had to go way out of our way to do it. We were sitting right on the threshold either way.
FWIW, I don't think every single deal Ainge makes is with tax in mind. He did what he had to do to get Smart signed. If ducking tax is so important, he'll find a way. But we are contenders, so paying some tax to take a shot at the championship isn't that out of question. Besides, we still have plenty of time to get under the tax limit, if that's so important to the ownership.

When IT was forced to sit out against the Cavs in last year's ECF, he tweeted that Lebron beat the Celtics so badly that he had made IT quit. I tweeted back at him and told him that was a bad take, and his reply - "The teams that you root for looks like you've got Tourette's Syndrome".
When word leaked about how bad his injury was, I wanted to throw it back into his face.......and then I realized I had unfollowed him immediately after that tweet.
Amin El Hassan hates Boston and will always imply that it's a racist city to live in.

Now that he's back and we can move forward...
why is no one really talking about the weight clause, besides about him being able to save money if he fails to hit the mark? I went through a lot of mini arguments with people who kept telling me Smart is the hardest worker on the team. I kept insisting that I don't think that's true. I started the arguments before the "new me" body but I later used it to add onto what I had been saying for a while. I think if Smart worked as hard as guys like Tatum and Brown (AB at the time, I argued), then he would probably be a better shooter and be able to get to the rim better (dunk more). I thought he really got lazy after his rookie season, where I believed he worked hard so he would get minutes and because he wasn't set into his role. I kept saying he coasted off his natural instincts/abilities but people kept saying I was wrong.
I want/need Smart to be the best he can be but in order for that to happen, he really does need to become the hardest worker or even one of them. I hope him getting paid doesn't give him the rope to let himself go again, he won't get bonuses but hell, he's still getting 50m regardless.
I won't hold it too much against him this offseason because of his mom but I need Smart to grow up and take care of himself because he STILL has the potential to be more (not a new player but refined) if he works as hard off the court as he does on it. I just imagine how much more improved he could have been had he worked like he did for his "new me" contract body, his entire 4 seasons. I don't care what stats say nor some people, outside of shooting, I saw improvements from Smart, especially early season (his best conditioning). It showed me that he has it but he has to have the drive to achieve it. More than that, his body will fail if he doesn't take better care of it, he's young now so his body bounces back, but if he keeps on that path his back may not be too kind to him if he isn't kind to it.
Now, I don't blame him for doing enough to get by, he's young, rich and talented but as a fan of his and the Cs I want him to be his best. Gotta get it together off the court. Y'all go on and on about little stuff when it comes to Williams while Smart largely gets a pass (not talking haters because everybody has them, gotta ignore that outrageous stuff). I'm glad DA and Co. are trying to keep him on the right path with the bonuses, they know he can do it but a lil extra green can give him an extra boost.
Kyrie even talked about learning to work hard after his knee injuries. Sure, injuries aren't always preventable but some of them come from not keeping your body in tip top condition. I thought maybe Smart learned that after his back issues prior seasons but apparently not if they had to put in the contract.

I think that Marcus does work hard, but he doesn't work......wait for it....SMART. I have no doubt that the guy plays a ton of ball in the summertime, but I also think that he probably parties really hard and doesn't watch his diet. His body type reminds me of Pierce in his early days, before KG and Ray got here. There are numerous stories of Paul partying it up during the offseason, and heading straight from the club and into the gym at 3-4 in the morning. Hopefully Marcus is able to realize that he needs to take better care of his body, especially with how hard he plays.

You can play ball all year and still not be a hard worker. I don't doubt he does all the things you mentioned but I still don't buy that he works hard. Just listen to the things he said in some of the new me videos. You said PP was in the gym at 3-4 but in one of the videos Smart said he started doing stuff like that offseason. He pretty much said that he hadn't worked as hard b4, what more do we need to hear? I'm sorry, he is a classic coaster. Love him for his on court work, but like Shaq, they do just enough to get by.
Edit: there is hard work to be a player in the league, that's not what I mean. I think most players in the nba have no choice but to work hard to stay. I'm talking about the hard work to be your best. In case I wasn't clear. I'm not talking about Sully level, people. Lordy.

Great. Antoine Walker 2.0, here we come...
Hope I am wrong, but I won't be the least bit surprised if the next time he comes to training camp in great shape is September 2021. I love the weight clause, but it should be 50% of the base contract, not a nominal amount.
