Celtics eyeing Italian forward Gigi Datome for next season

Post#1 » by Gant » Sun Mar 10, 2013 1:49 pm

The Celtics' overseas scouting department continues to drink lots of espresso...

Boston Celtics among NBA teams interested in Gigi Datome

The Italian International forward will move overseas next season?
Gigi Datome, captain and star of Virtus Roma, may sign in the NBA next season. The forward of the Italian National team is having his best season in Serie A, where he scores 17.8ppg with 5.8rpg shooting with 53.9% from two and 46.1% from the arc in 21 games played.

Datome, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, is drawing interest from at least three NBA teams and one of them are the Boston Celtics.

The contract of Datome with Virtus Roma expires at end of the season and NBA is one of the strongest options for his future.

Recently, Datome changed also his agent moving from Side by Side (owned by Toto Ricciotti, former agent of Andrea Bargnani) to Sigma Sports of Matteo Comellini.

'I am sure he can have a future in the NBA' said his teammate in Roma, Jordan Taylor. 'He is a great shooter and player. Several teams may need a player like him' added former Wisconsin PG in an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

If this happens, I'll be rooting for us to trade for Mario chalmers as well.

Apparently Luigi can do more than just shoot from long. Here's an 18 second clip of him slamming on everyone's favorite Turkish Celtic, Semih Erden. The word "schiacciata" translates as "flattened" or "squashed."

Datome is very long and can really get some sky.

I watched that clip Gant, and I am against this interest. I cannot bring myself to root for a dude with a ponytail.

The Celtics interest in Lou Amundson would indicate they have decided as an organization to table all ponytail concerns. As for myself, while respecting all opinions, I would sign a guy with antennas if he can play.

Besides, I don't think that's a ponytail; I think it's a back up battery.

I completely agree. This is the type of thinking we need more of around here.

By the way, did you turn up the audio on that clip? Great call by Italian Mike Gorman.

If nothing else, I've always thought that there haven't been near enough Gigi's in the NBA. Further, I do love any name in the consonant-vowel-consant-vowel (Jiri being a personal favorite), so, frankly, I hope this happens.

I dig the Mario/Luigi pairing, but how about digging up Wang ZhiZhi for the Gigi/ZhiZhi front court?

Also, sad to hear the stance on ponytails, Bad-Thoma, 80% of my pre-draft love for Anderson Varejao (fun fact - for those new to the forum, he was a very popular fellow on this board among the draftniks back in the day. There was a minority crowd [myself included] who similarly may have been a bit too in love with Tiago Splitter. Regarding notable misses, there was a fair amount of love for NBA name hall of fame inductee, Sophocles Shortsightedness (something like that) was attributable to his glorious main.

Just like AB's tenacity invigorates the team, so does a mane as it flows behind a graceful, yet equally powerful cut through the lane. Don't overrate the influence Bird's mullet had on the success of the 80's era Celtics.

ETA - Oh my goodness yes did I ever enjoy the Italian Mike Gorman's call!!
You gotta make it sexy! Hips and nips, otherwise I'm not eating.

i"ll take him if he's cheap lol.

I still don't get why we traded Semih smfh. Idk how but Danny & Doc did a pretty damn good job of brining in scrub bigs & making them useful.

Oh don't get me wrong, if it's a Celtics ponytail (or antennae for that matter), I'll come around. Besides, with the salaries in the NBA I am sure he can afford a personal grooming coach.

Would not mind signing this guy. Looks athletic and can obviously shoot.
Good assessment:

Some decent video on him here. Even dunks on a guy. Clearly can shoot though.

pretty athletic guy, could be a good sign but i dont see him at the 4 honestly with his current body frame, neither at the 3 because of green+pierce....

Pierce is no spring chicken.

He may be gone in the offseason.

If Blake Griffin did that, the video wouldve gone viral.

No I'm serious. Dead serious. I hate people with pony tails as well as people with 6 fingers on their left hand and people with brown hair that have between 3 and 5 red hairs in their beard.

Actually schiacciata simply means "dunk". Anyway he's a great player, and he's having a dominating season here in Italy this year, he deserves to be in the NBA. Even though it may be a problem to play him as a 5, as it was for Bargs in Toronto.

In America he would play mainly as SF, but in the current NBA he can also play some 4 in small ball, like here in Italy and Europe.

He needed some years to fully develop, but right now he's having a breakout season, after the already good last one.

He deserves definitely a NBA chance.
