OT- thoughts on Bobcats changing name to Hornets?

So if you havent heard, the Bobcats are going to change to the Hornets now that NO isn't using the name. I was wondering what you guys thought about this.

My gut reaction is to not like any team name change, especially when one team is taking another teams name, has this ever happened before? (I'm not a big NFL fan but did the Browns do this?) But A always liked the Hornets as a kid and they had pretty cool colors/logo so I think I actually like this. Maybe it is better to get it right, after all no ne will really think about the weirdness of it all in a few years. It will just seem like its always been the Cha Hornets.

Now if we can just have the Wizards change back to the bullets.

I think they are just taking their rightful name back.

Now... "The Pelicans" - ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? No, really. Is this for real? It has to be a bad joke? Worst team name ever. If I were a player I would HATE that and if I were I fan... just ICK. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

It doesn't even roll off the tongue... New Orleans Pelicans. What? Piss poor. Is this truly the best they could come up with? Wow. Just wow.

Both the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers were previously the Washington Senators.

Both the second Cleveland Browns and second Washington Senators were created as expansion franchises; they weren't name changes from something else.

For that matter, the team we root for isn't the first one to have been called the Celtics.

Yep. Now generally referred to as the Original Celtics.

It rolls off the tongue if you pronounce New Orleans correctly. The "leans" in Orleans rhymes with the "cans" in Pelicans

Agreed - glad to see the 'Hornets' returning to its rightful home. 'Bobcats' is alright for a middle school team name. The only notable thing about it at the pro level is the 'lolcats' variation, which I guess I'll miss a bit. But honestly for the last 6-7 years as closely as I follow the league I've always felt like I had to stop and think: 'wait, which crappy team is this again?' when dealing with NOH and CHA.

That said, 'Pelicans' is a remarkable leap of .. faith? It seems like total and complete crap but we might as well see if they can pull it off. But I mean, to shorten it (for newspaper headlines etc) what are they going to call them - the 'Pels'? The ''Cans'?

The New York Yankees were originally the Baltimore Orioles. No lie.

As for the Browns, even though theyre technically an expansion team the Ravens let them have all of the Browns records and history. Basically we're supposed to pretend that none of it ever happened.

Yeah never got that about the Browns. I guess if the Kings could have/do go to seattle ad become the sonics it will be weird too.

If the Celtics moved somewhere else and then a few years later we got an expansion team called the celtics in boston who would you root for ?

I don't think it's the same thing, "Celtics" are a an ethnic group present in different areas of your country... Lot of "Celtics" in NY and Bos, other ten Dublin or Glasgow... Hornets are all over the world...

Tough question.. Me not being in Boston would probably continue to cheer for the original franchise... But probably no one would ever do that, democracy in the US would be strongly at risk...

No. It wouldn't be the same team, period. I am a proponent of picking one team and rooting for it. If your loyalties can switch just like that, you are nothing more than a casual fair weather fan, or the equivalent IMO. It would be different if the real Celtics no longer existed.

I still don't understand why Utah kept the name Jazz when they moved from New Orleans to Salt Lake City. Salt Lake seems like the least Jazzy city in US

I actually like what happened with the Browns, and if I lived in Seattle I sure as heck wouldn't be rooting for OKC, and sure as heck WOULD've supported the Kings coming, being renamed the SuperSonics, and getting all of the former SEA history.

We can't just pretend that it's the city and it's people and some pro athletes in some magical relationship bequeathed by God. The owners have a pretty big role, and sometimes some of those owners **** things up. When they do, I'm all for trying to put things back together again.

OT a bit but how many of us were rooting for SAC to move to SEA? I was. SAC's a backwater and had their fun, but the northwest needs/deserves more ball. Bummer it fell through.

The name "Hornets" actually does have some history behind it. There was a quote from some British general or something during the revolutionary war that called Charlotte a "hornet's nest" because of how big of a pain in the ass they were for the Brits to deal with. Sort of a badge of honor for them.

"Louisiana Pelicans" rolls off the tongue nicely. If they are going to use New Orleans then the team name is going to have to start with a vowel.

I like it. Its more marketable. Could end up seeing knock off ads similar to Larry Johnsons, etc. Better unis. Fresh feel to that organization. No brainer for that franchise to switch back to Hornets

Did they predate the NBA? Was it the NBL?

Also didn't the Celtics do a "franchise swap" with...I want to say Buffalo in the late 70s, so we could keep Red and get rid of John Y Brown (which makes it seem like Red fired the owner which is awesome)? I guess technically if you want to root for the original NBA celtics or you were rooting for the Celtics before that transaction, then you should be rooting for the ...Clippers? Personally I'm rooting for the Boston Celtics, the Boston and the Celtics go hand in hand to me. If an owner moves a team there is most likely a breach of the relationship with the fans, I don't think that is fair weather if you don't want to support a team like that.

Regarding the Hornets back to Charlotte I also think it's a no-brainer. Bobcats was kind of awful especially referring to the owner. Also I must be the only one who likes "Pelicans." Lol
