Trade Ideas Thread
So in the trade board I had two Celts fans respond to a thread I posted. Out of it, this trade was born, and I want to hear what you think. Please understand, if you find this to be a very unfair trade, I probably don't understand that, and would appreciate if you could explain why, as I'm only interested in exploring trades that actually seem realistic.
Celtics Send: [Green or Bogans]/Faverani/[Sullinger or Olynyk]/[Pressy]/Babb
Blazers Send: [CJ McCollum or Thomas Robinson]/Freeland/Wright/Leonard/[Claver]/2015 Protected 1st
The 1st will likely be around 25th or so, but just in case, these are the proposed protections:
2015: Top 16
2016: Top 14
2017: Top 10
2018: Top 6
2019: Unprotected
Different Versions: There are several players that are in square brackets here. That is to signify that there are several slightly different versions of this trade that depend on what Boston finds best.
If... Boston sends Green Portland sends Thomas Robinson and gets back Olynyk as well.
If... Boston sends Bogans Portland sends CJ McCollum and gets back Sullinger as well. In this trade, Portland keeps Claver and Boston keeps Pressy to make salaries match.
Pressy and Babb are included to make the roster slots work correctly for Boston, and would likely be waived by Portland.
So... what do you think?

Not a fan of either. Feel like we lose the best player in both trades (Sully and KO respectively). Additionally, Green is an asset for us. Not a salary dump. Maybe a bigger asset to us than other teams, but an asset nonetheless. I do think when he is in the last year of his contract (season after next), he will be a GREAT value for teams. This is just my opinion though. Thanks for sharing.

Sully is definitely the best name in this list, but I'd prefer TRob over Olynyk personally. The only reason I included Sully was because Bogans for CJ and a 1st is a HOT MESS from Portland's perspective.
What do you want to achive with this trade?
Trying to put together about 80% of a championship bench.

Ok, that makes sense. Problem is Boston gets quantity instead of quality. Boston needs a dollar not four quarters, therefore it's a no from Boston as long as Sullinger or Olynyk is included.

Re: A trade question from a Portland fan
Celtics are only making moves that net them a specific role:
i.e. Starting Center / Starting PF / Starting Wing (whichever James Young isn't) / backup SG / backup C
If the Celtics take on an undesirable contract, it's for a draft pick deemed sufficiently worthy.
The Celtics are not overturning their roster and chemistry for a pile of ?";'*@! !! !!!

Re: A trade question from a Portland fan
To be honest the player you guys should consider is Brandon Bass. Only one year left on his deal at reasonable money, and he is a solid all round player, great individual defender, solid shooter, great foul shooter, playoff tested, good locker room guy.
The Celtics are in a position where they should be giving all the minutes to Sullinger and Olynyk so Bass doesn't really fit this team anymore.
Probably too much to give up for Bass but maybe Robinson and Leonard?

Re: A trade question from a Portland fan
If Portland wants to do a salary dump of all the trash on its roster, the Cs could easily accommodate.
The Cs could trade Bogans, Babb, Johnson and Pressey for Freeland, Wright, Claver, and Leonard.
All the Cs players have completely unguaranteed deals, do they can be released immediately and the Blazers get immediate caproom, enough to sign a free agent at the $10 million range. That ought to be enough to get a very good player or players.
The Cs get a lottery protected first round pick in 2015. The pick is unprotected in 2018. All the guys the Cs get are only guaranteed through 2015. So the Cs take a hit for one season

I'd imagine that this type of deal would be done either late in free agency or at the trade deadline when the Celtics can't trade for a star player, and they do this in the context of a three team trade so that Portland can trade for a big?

No it's not. Bogans has a fully unguaranteed deal and can be waived for his full $5m+ for immediate cap space.

I mean I LOVE the idea of adding TRob but Green and KO for basically just him is kinda crazy seeing how he shows flashes but is a high paid defensive specialist at the moment. I still think TRob will be a better player than KO say 3 years from now but looking at right now KO did more offensively at almost half the cost as TRob did defensively over the last 2 seasons. So to take him on would be a risk due to him being on his #5 pick contract and yet to produce. Green is a walking 17pts-4Rbs on a cheap 8.7M and like a said KO was efficient on Offense and a no show on D but is also a cheap 1.9M so that isn’t happening.
However, Bass and Fav for Myers and TRob is something more appropriate. Bass is an upgrade off the bench, has defensive flexibility for 3/4s, and playoff experience. While Fav is a slightly cheaper version of Leonard which is to say neither is that effective. Probably even throw in the rights to the 76ers pick (1st in 2015 lotto protected).

There's just no way that Portland would trade TRob for Bass without also fixing the rest of their front line. Having Bass would make us significantly less able to deal with not having Aldridge or Lopez on the floor. Bass for TRob just doesn't actually solve any problems for Portland, it creates additional ones.
Green is NOT cheap. Matthews will give you more stats more efficiently, and costs about 30% less.
If Boston isn't interested in getting away from Green, there's not really much point. Both CJ and TRob can easily be developed in Portland, it will just take some time Portland may not want to spend.
No it's not. Bogans has a fully unguaranteed deal and can be waived for his full $5m+ for immediate cap space.
Which does jack for Portland, since we already have an MLE.

That would be REALLY interesting if Portland has a specific target for that $10 million. It would have to happen in the next 24 hours though, otherwise the contracts become guaranteed once they are traded.

Couple things:
Wes Matthews is indeed better, cheaper, and more efficient than Jeff Green but he’s more the exception rather than the rule. Wes and Afflalo for some reason are much underrated in terms of efficiency/salary and kudos to the Blazers for having one of those guys. I would love to trade you Bass and Green in one fell swoop for TRob and a protected 1st but the cap on your end says no thanks. Alternatively, Bass, Green, Chris Johnson, and Babb for TRob, Freeland, Wright, and Leonard works in the trade machine so that’s a possibility.

Re: Trade Ideas Thread
*unrelated to the above line of discussion*
One thing that I think we sometimes forget is that no matter what scenario we go for - stand pat, minor moves, trade Rondo, something crazy, Josh Smith - we have more draft picks than we could ever use. We're not drafting and keeping 8 players in the next two years, and 13 in the next 4. Some of these picks, or the players they turn into, are going to be dealt, no matter what else you're assuming about our intentions. And really, you'd rather exchange quantity for quality anyway.
What I can't figure out is how to turn some of those picks into something else we'd actually care to take back.
An impression I have is that the cluster of 2015 Boston 2nd, 2015 Philly 2nd, 2016 Philly 2nd ought to be able to be a component in some sort of trade; they all may very well wind up being practically late 1sts, and pay off in the near future.
Perhaps something like:
Boston Out:
- Bradley signed and traded
- those three early 2nds
Boston in:
- a bleh contract
- something of quite nice value?
