My take on Danny in the trade market and Rondo's fate:
http://basketball.realgm.com/article/23 ... ndo-In-Tow I also put this in the Rondo thread but it covers other ground and I did not want to derail the Rondo discussion.

Elrod, I like your stuff so ima read it tomorrow at work.
I'm just over this Rondo talk. The media is just too much for me. Unless they're reporting just about done deals, or doing interviews, or giving us injury time lines, there no need for this.
Rondo was in a major trade rumor every year. I'm over it.
If it happens, it happens. I hope Rondo gets a great situation he's happy in & Boston loves their return as well. Chances are like 7% that Rondo's moved.

Just me but I don't want to see Jeff Green walk. He is no PP, just a great piece for the right team.
Great post elrod,

Eh good read on the link but i'd lean on us keeping rondo and signing him for less than max deal. Nothing on Dallas or Houston is better than rondo, in fact not much on any team.

I would trade(3 team trade) rondo/wallace/green or bass to the Piston and kings as long as we net
Mclemore and Monroe in return

tl;dr
Rondo's scoring is deplorable. Hence he will be traded unless he isn't.

excellent article pretty much sums up the sad situation.
i'll admit i badly misjudged rondo. i thought he could be our 2007 paul pierce, the guy who could centerpiece our rebuild. not only did he not step up to that challenge, he has actually significantly regressed this year.
this is a major failure for ainge. he hitched his wagon to the wrong horse. i'd say arguably this is his worst mistake as a GM so far; he has had many mistakes but they haven't been franchise-setback-several-years type mistakes. this one is. rondo had to step up for ainge's rebuild to succeed. ainge screwed the pooch on this one. i still believe in danny but this one hurts.
it's obvious we're at the end of the line with rondo. we might as well get what we can. he is still a good if mercurial player, he still has some value.
unfortunately the whole league sees what we see, that he isn't a franchise centerpiece, that he's maybe the 3rd or 4th best player on a championship team, just as he was when we were contending. in the right situation he could flourish, but he can't consistently lead teams to playoff victories night in and night out. but at this point i'm not even sure that rondo's presence attracts other superstars. he's been exposed.
as i said several weeks back, rondo has been the single biggest disappointment, by far, this year. i was fooled into thinking he could really be our leader and captain for the next 5 years. now he's not going to last 5 months in a C's uniform.

Now there are legit rumors. I think Danny's public response to Rondo Kobe meeting of "I don't like it but times are different" may have been a clue that his outlook was changing. I don't know if Rondo was sending a message but the message was received. The Dallas and Houston rumors might be more BS but they seem more real to me than those this off season.
As Danny is fond of saying, it takes two to tango and it looks like he is ready to tango.

Great article, Elrod.
I'm getting used to the idea the Rondo will either get traded for a somewhat disappointing package, or walk in the summer. Either way, his decline in shooting and free throw % make it hard to defend reasons to resign him.

Rondo with Dirk, Parsons, Ellis and a closer like Chandler makes them favorite for title if they can defend and stay healthy. Not happy with the return we would get.

Danny Ainge has no delusions of grandeur about Rondo, he always knew what he had, which is why he's always tried to trade him.
Danny Ainge's worst mistake to me was passing up on Giannis, it's the only thing I always think about consistently in terms of Ainge mistakes.

I don't see how Ainge has set back the franchise at all with Rondo. Rondo isn't stopping us from doing anything we want to do at the moment. He should/would have been traded no matter what, of course as you've mentioned, him playing bad means we won't get something too juicy in return.

Excellent effort Elrod....What you said makes allot of sence....It's sorta sad that Rondo has never been able to be an average free throw shooter.....If he was even remotely good at the line, he would be able to get there easily with his ability to penetrate defenses....
What is the kicker for me is outlined in these two paragrahs below...
"To put it another way, prior to this season, in the entire 69 year history of the NBA, not a single player who played 31.8 minutes per game has ever made as few free throws as Rondo is making this season. For a point guard, not to mention a superstar, this production is a farce."
"At this point, Rondo appears to refuse to initiate contact and draw fouls because he is petrified of bricking free throws. It means he has taken a major weapon he needs to be an effective player out of his arsenal. That makes it much easier for teams to defend the Celtics."
One other item that is also relevant here, is that Rondo seems unwilling to sign a contract extension before he becomes a free agent....Were he to do this, it would take some of the pressure off of his back IMO....
Wether that would mean that he could now focus on getting better at the free throw line or not is anyone's guess?....But I think if Rondo were signed for what he is worth and both he and the team were happy with that signing, the whole idea of Rondo leaving for places unknown would be replaced by a much more positive feeling that now we can forge ahead and get better as a team without all of the distractions....

Rondo + picks for Greg Monroe makes perfect sense... Rondo gets reunited with J.Smith,
Pistons finally gets a decent Ball handler... Boston a low post threat

Will try to read after work but I imagine it'd be along the lines of.
The Celtics suck
Rondo is old
Rondo is replaceable because he's not a franchise player on the level of Paul Pierce. Hell Smart could be on Rondo's level in 3-4 years if all goes well. But he has some value as at least top 15 PG so he's tradable.

Smart could be better than Rondo by next year or Smart could obviously get hurt himself or never develop that much offensively. Nevertheless, I'd much rather have Smart now than Rondo on the rebuilding Celtics just because of the huge contract advantage over the next 3 seasons after this one, youth is on his side and he has already proven himself enough to me on the defensive end.
Rondo seems like a very good fit in Dallas so for his sake I hope he is traded there.

rondo was supposed to be our franchise centerpiece to build around. if ainge knew he wasn't, he should have traded rondo a long time ago when his value was higher.
giannis... pffft, let him do something meaningful first.

First off - don't get me wrong Rondo can play much better then he has. But I doubt that Ainge ever thought that Rondo was a franchise guy. And the league has known this for a very long time. Tony Parker told the world that Rondo was riding the coattails of the big 3 and the only people to really dispute that were a few guys on this forum.

Some others who disputed that… Kobe and Lebron and Danny Ainge, and Paul Pierce and KG…..
But that was then and this is now….. and now is that Rondo is a complimentary star who cant absorb contact at the rim or beat everybody off the dribble anymore. If you can get 15 assists with 9 reb from a pass first guy and you have Ellis, Parsons and Dirk to pass to then he is going to look like a superstar again. Oh and if Tyler Zeller can finish Rondo's drives for him…. what is Tyson Chander going to do? Have a field day… that's what.
