Lets talk about the Trade Exception acquired

I'm intrigued about the 12.8 mil trade exception that The Celtics acquired from this trade. Who can we acquire with this. Who's got that type of contract and when does it expire?

It's $12.9 Mil, and we can obtain a player up to $15 Mil with it. It expires one year from it's date of origin.

I think one of these two options are the most likely:
1) It is used as a salary dump for somebody during next year and Cs get a pick for it
2) Wallace + sb (if anybody) is traded for equally pointless contract(s) that lasts until June 2016 after August 1st 2015. Cs get it extended through 2016 free agency
I would be absolutely surprised if Cs used it on actual player that could improve the team (well, maybe somebody like Lance Stephenson).

I was under the impression you couldn't go over the actual value of the exemption??

I thought of Andre Iguodala personally. Not that I'm specifically advocating him, but he is a guy who seems to be overpaid and GS might have regret enough to deal him next offseason/season for the cap relief.

You may be right. In any case, $12.9 Mil is a good amount.

We are already slated to have $30m+ in cap room from now until forever, so it doesn't mean much.
We could conceivably use it at the deadline, or to preserve exceptions and Bird Rights in the offseason, but chances are that it will just expire.

I seriously doubt that Danny will let that TPE expire, with his current track record of using them up.

I know. It sucks that Rondo is gone!
I fully envisioned him and Bradley doing good things. Now, I'm not even sure about Bradley.
But, the game must go on. So I change my avatar, reluctantly.

Yeah man. Well it's a good one. I think good things are ahead for both of those guys.

What it means is that we can sign free agents up to the cap this summer, then add a player worth 12.9 million.
It also gives us a ton of flexibility in trades. I'd be looking at New Orleans and Indiana- we have expirings, a huge exception, Jeff Green, Gerald Wallace- would Indiana give up their lottery pick this year to have David West and George Hill taken off their hands? Can we do TE for Ryan Anderson and Green/Bass for Eric Gordon/1st? Flip Anderson to the Kings for Mclemore, Gordon to Indiana.. You can get creative if you're willing to play with some bad money.

In offseason, disgrunteled star and 3 draft picks for the TPE. That's how it happens.

Two most likely scenarios:
1) Salary dump like perhaps Iguadala as mentioned above. If it sounds unlikely, remember that our 2015 draft picks are going to be worth almost twice as much as they are now once draft week arrives. If the GSW or other teams are somewhat reluctant to just dump the salary of an ill-fitting star, a first round pick will go a long way come June.
2) Similar to our deal with Cleveland last year. A team with little cap space REALLY wants to sign a superstar free agent, perhaps even LeBron or KLove, and they give up a decent asset and pick for our trade exception. Well worth it for both sides. Lots of teams with clogged up cap space for us to help out/exploit.

No trade exceptions do not work that way. Here is the simple rule you cannot combine exceptions. The traded player exception is an exception so you can't combine it with 25% or 50% exception.
The exception itself allows you to acquire a player who makes 12.9 mil or less.

This is not accurate to clear the salary cap to sign FA's you would have to renounce the exception.

How far are we under the tax now?
I'd imagine Ainge will offer the TE around to take on a contract that brings us right back up to the edge for a minor asset.

My reading of the CBA is that a non-tax paying team sending out $9.8 million to $19.6 million can receive in return the amount of the outgoing salary plus $5 million. Is that incorrect when applied to exceptions?

we can use it in a sign and trade, I think we can go over by 100k in trades, don't know about sign and trades if it's similar.
