BOSTON - Bill Laimbeer is returning to the place of his birth, Boston, as the Celtics look to expand their coaching depth. A center with the Detroit Pistons in his playing days, Laimbeer is going to focus on helping the Celtics with their outside shooting and rebounding.
While Laimbeer was born in Boston, he would move west as a child and play high school basketball in California. Laimbeer said, "There was a period of my life when I hated every single person in Massachusetts. That period lasted fifty-eight years."
He attended Notre Dame, where he played four seasons before he was drafted by Cleveland. Laimbeer was asked about his journey from the Fighting Irish to the Celtics, and if he thought that Boston was similar in feeling. "I do see Catholics," he answered.
After being asked a question about what he could bring to the Celtics, Laimbeer provided his usual views on the world. "Coming from coaching in the WNBA, I am used to weak and stupid players," Laimbeer said. "When I look around the NBA now, I have to tell you, it is a disgrace. DeMarcus Cousins, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, they are all trash. I may hate Larry Bird and Danny Ainge but I can tell you I would rather have them on my team than fools like Carmelo or LeBron."
When asked about the current Celtics roster, Laimbeer surprised some with his remarks. "They stink. I hate them." Laimbeer then elaborated on his point, "When I played, I would have gotten them all ejected. An elbow here, a pinch there, and you know I don't mind getting into fights with little midgets called Thomas. But I do respect the tall one, the Canadian, I wish I ripped a few arms out of sockets when I played."
It was suggested to Laimbeer that past indiscretions may make him unpopular with fans in The Garden. Laimbeer disagreed with that assertion, "Time heals all wounds, that is what they say. But I also have something to say, if someone wants to boo me or challenge me to a fight I am not hard to find. The fan in the first row, the fan in the upper deck, Bill Simmons, Marky Mark Wahlberg, Wade Boggs, Rick Middleton, Greg Kite, the stupid Mayor, Gronk, the entire Kennedy Family, John Cena, Robert Parish, the fat guy on Cheers, if they want me they can find me and I will knock them out."
Laimbeer played fourteen seasons in the NBA, mostly with Detroit. He won two NBA championships with a team that included Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars and Dennis Rodman. Laimbeer has been an assistant coach in the NBA before, in Minnesota, and the head coach of the Detroit Shock and New York Liberty of the WNBA. The Celtics are coached by Brad Stevens. His assistant coaches are Jay Larranaga, Jamie Young, Jerome Allen, Micah Shrewsberry and Walter McCarty, and now also Bill Laimbeer. Details of Laimbeer's contract have not been disclosed.
