Game 2: Fort Wayne @ Maine | Monday 4/10, 8 PM ET, Facebook Live
Game 3*: Fort Wayne @ Maine | Wednesday 4/12, 7 PM ET, Facebook Live

*If necessary

SERIES PREVIEW

In a league where rosters shuffle year after year, these two teams have managed to instill a winning culture. Both teams are making their fourth postseason appearance in five years, though the Mad Ants have a title under their belt while the Red Claws are still searching for their first playoff series win.

The common thread between the two teams this year is NBA talent. Celtics rookie Abdel Nader has a strong case for NBA D-League MVP while spending the entire season with Maine. Guerschon Yabusele, Boston’s No. 16 overall pick this past June, recently joined him in the frontcourt, and guard Demetrius Jackson has also played much of his rookie season with the Claws.

For Fort Wayne, the NBA talent comes in the form of veteran Tyler Hansbrough, who has been a double-double machine since joining the Mad Ants last month. The veteran squad also features NBA vets Marquis Teague and Travis Leslie in the backcourt as well as intriguing rookie Ben Bentil.

FYI: The Magic haven't picked Lakeland. That was an erroneous report.

Also, I highly recommend reading Chris Reichert's article if you care at all about the D-League and a full minor league. He did a great job with it.

Where are you getting your information from?

This was reported on August 11, 2016, by multiple sources.
Steve Kyler is the only one to wobble on it. And he's more NBA, than D-League.
Unless D-League Digest, and all the other sources, rescind it, then we should count it as valid.

The Orlando Magic are finalizing plans for Lakeland, FL as the site of their future D-League affiliate, league sources tell D-League Digest.

The team will play at The Lakeland Center and is expected to be in place for the 2017-18 season.

Lakeland was one of eight locations targeted in the Magic’s original proposal. The two finalists were Lakeland and Kissimmee as reported by Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel.

The Magic themselves came out and said they hadn't finalized anything and that Lakeland and Kissimmee were both in consideration. And Steve Kyler is in Central FL same as me and we both have some connections to the franchise. The fear is that Lakeland won't draw as well as Kissimmee. But Lakeland has a better arena, so that is what is holding things up.

I wouldn't call a fan twitter account any sort of proof. And you saw the same tweets I saw from Steve Kyler. And that came direct from the team. Steve is VERY tied in to the Magic. They didn't issue anything, because there was nothing to issue.

D-League Digest is a great site, but they aren't any more dialed in than local reporters who are with the team all the time.

If you need more: http://orlandomagicdaily.com/2016/08/12/report-orlando-magic-honing-d-league-site/

Phillip is as tied in to the Magic as any and he has the same report as I did and quoted Steve Kyler.

The team has said they won't issue any sort of release until they have picked a site and have more details to share. I don't have any way of sharing that because they didn't tweet it or post it on their team site. I heard it through the team directly in a presser that wasn't related to the D-League at all, but the question was asked anyway. I mean, if it would really hep, I could tweet it and then quote my own tweet. But that would be redundant with what Steve already tweeted.

It is starting to get a little old being questioned on everything. Especially something as stupid as the site of a D-League team that is completely unrelated to the Celtics. Ridiculous.

NBA roster and stash expansion should be next. Teams should be able to stash 5+ guys down in the D league, make it a true farm system

Agreed.
At least 5 guys. With Direct Contracts to the Parent team, not the general D-League, as it is now.

Increase the D-League pay to a percentage of NBA contracts. Ex: Start at 20% of Rookie Minimum (About $110G). Up to 100%, or higher for a budding star.

I also think that the D-League could go over the amount of parent teams. Ex 30-40 Teams.

Not sure it will play out like this, but these aren't bad ideas at all. D-League reform, to make it into a real minor league, is very high on the list to be addressed with the new CBA.

I really want some form of the 5 guys you mentioned. My idea is to give them a good chunk of pay (maybe a % of the minimum works), but it doesn't count against the cap as long as the guy doesn't play in the NBA at all.

That way you give guys in the incentive to play in the D-League and stay connected to their NBA franchise, while also giving the team more incentive and control.

I'll do you one better.
NBA teams need a whole separate Cap. Solely to spend on D-League teams. Maybe make that a percentage of the Regular Cap, as well. 10%? Even 2%, would be something.

Hopefully Michele Roberts and Adam Silver, make this an integral part of the new CBA, as you state.

NBA Invites with D-League in Mind
By Eric Pincus | September 1, 2016

http://www.basketballinsiders.com/nba-invites-with-d-league-in-mind/
The following list includes players with partial guarantees, who may be D-League candidates, along with NBA teams and their minor league partners (which is well-illustrated on the D-League site):

Boston Celtics — Maine Red Claws: Ben Bentil ($250,000 guaranteed), Marcus Georges-Hunt ($25,000)

Brooklyn Nets — Long Island Nets: Yogi Ferrell ($100,000), Beau Beech ($45,000), Egidijus Mockevicius ($100,000)

Charlotte Hornets — Greensboro Swarm: Mike Tobey ($75,000), Treveon Graham ($75,000)

Chicago Bulls — Windy City Bulls

Cleveland Cavaliers — Canton Charge: DeAndre Liggins ($25,000 — Sioux Falls has returning rights)

Dallas Mavericks — Texas Legends: Dorian Finney-Smith ($100,000), Nicolas Brussino ($100,000), Kyle Collinsworth ($70,000), Jameel Warney ($20,000)

Detroit Pistons — Grand Rapids Drive

Golden State Warriors — Santa Cruz Warriors: Elliot Williams ($250,000 — Santa Cruz has returning rights)

Houston Rockets — Rio Grande Valley Vipers: The Rockets reportedly have deals to sign Gary Payton II, Kyle Wiltjer and Isaiah Taylor, but the deals are not yet official.

Indiana Pacers — Fort Wayne Mad Ants: Alex Poythress (guaranteed TBD), Julyan Stone (guaranteed TBD)

Los Angeles Lakers — Los Angeles D-Fenders: Zach Auguste ($60,000), Travis Wear (guaranteed TBD), Julian Jacobs

Memphis Grizzlies — Iowa Energy: Troy Williams ($150,000), Tony Wroten ($25,000), D.J. Stephens ($35,000 — Canton has returning rights)

Miami HEAT — Sioux Falls Skyforce: Briante Weber ($218,659 — Sioux Falls has returning rights), Rodney McGruder ($150,000), Stefan Jankovic ($100,000), Okaro White ($100,000)

New York Knicks — Westchester Knicks: Ron Baker ($75,000), Chasson Randle ($100,000), J.P. Tokoto ($100,000 — Blue have returning rights)

Oklahoma City Thunder — Oklahoma City Blue: Semaj Christon ($200,000)

Orlando Magic — Eric BayHawks

Philadelphia 76ers — Delaware 87ers: James Webb ($65,000), Shawn Long ($65,000), Brandon Paul ($155,000), Cat Barber (guarantee TBD)

Phoenix Suns — Northern Arizona Suns

Sacramento Kings — Reno Bighorns

San Antonio Spurs — Austin Spurs: Ryan Arcidiacono ($75,000), Bryn Forbes ($125,000), Patricio Garino ($100,000)

Toronto Raptors — Raptors 905: Fred VanVleet ($50,000), Jarrod Uthoff ($50,000)

Utah Jazz — Salt Lake City Stars: Marcus Paige ($125,000)

The Nets, Bulls and Swarm are expansion teams. The Suns and Stars have recently relocated, moving closer to their parent franchises.

A number of players headed to training camp, without any guaranteed salary, may still end up in the D-League as affiliate players, like Keith Hornsby of the Mavericks, Wayne Selden of the Grizzlies or Yanick Moreira and Drew Crawford of the Raptors.

The Wizards, who are one of the eight teams without an affiliate, are paying market value to bring players to camp like Daniel Ochefu ($50,000 guaranteed), Danuel House ($100,000) and Sheldon McClellan ($50,000). Washington won’t be able to hold onto their D-League rights.

Similarly, the Trail Blazers guaranteed Tim Quarterman $75,000, the Hawks guaranteed $50,000 to Matt Costello and the Nuggets promised D.J. Kennedy $50,000.

They need to totally change this around.
NBA teams should Keep the Rights of Affiliates.
Sign up to 5, Two-Way Contracts.
Increase the D-League pay.
Etc, Etc...

The NBA D-League isn’t that far away
from being a true minor-league system

But to get all the way there, it’ll need the NBA’s help in a few key areas
By Tom Ziller | Sep 15, 2016

Image

http://www.sbnation.com/2016/9/15/12913288/nba-d-league-development-adam-silver
One unaffiliated team, the Bucks, is on track to create their own D-League squad in time for the 2017-18 season. That would bring the D-League to 23 teams. The Timberwolves are considering proposals from local groups to open up an affiliate in Minnesota. That’d make 24. A group in Omaha is trying to start a new D-League team so it can grab an affiliation, possibly from the Nuggets or Pelicans. That’s 25....

But for the D-League to become a true farm system for the NBA, a few other things need to happen. Reports suggest the NBA will look at boosting D-League salaries in the next collective bargaining agreement from the current $25,000 (at the most — most players are actually below that number) to something more competitive with European and Asian leagues. That’s part of it. But to really turn the D-League into a farm system, the NBA will need to tweak roster size rules.

Right now, NBA teams contending for playoff spots have little roster space for developmental players. As such, fringe prospects get waived in training camp. While they might then end up on the same NBA team’s D-League roster — if they don’t bail for Italy or China -- the NBA team doesn’t hold any sort of exclusive rights. Any ol’ NBA team can pick them up. So resources spent on developing players might not benefit your NBA team as it currently stands.

Carmelo Anthony Advocates for D-League Overhaul as Part of Next NBA CBA
By Adam Wells | Featured Columnist | Oct 18, 2016

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2670382-carmelo-anthony-advocates-for-d-league-overhaul-as-part-of-next-nba-cba
In terms of actual proposals Anthony has to help create additional jobs in the D-League, Shelburne noted he is discussing two-way contracts in collective bargaining negotiations that allow players to play on a D-League team and an NBA team.

Anthony, who is [a] vice president of the National Basketball Players Association, is also discussing increasing pay for D-League players and adding language to the collective bargaining agreement so all 30 NBA teams have an affiliated D-League club:

I'm a big advocate of developing our own players. If you look at soccer, for example, a lot of those clubs have top-notch academies. ... By me being in soccer now, I've started to understand the dynamics of developing your own players. We've got to keep our players here. We don't want them to have to go overseas.
