Juancho Hernangómez on Celtics

I have just watched a Juancho Hernangómez long interview in Spanish. Since the Denver Nuggets have finished the season weeks ago, Juancho is already back in Spain and he was speaking about his rookie season in the NBA.
The best moment in his rookie year was the 27 points he scored in the 132-110 win against the Warriors...

But when he was talking about the day of the draft, he told something interesting:

He was told that he was going to be picked by the Boston Celtics at pick#16, but then, the Nuggets picked him at pick#15, when he actually knew nothing about Denver' interest on him. Also, according to him, looks like the Celtics were thinking about leaving him one more year in Europe. He also told that playing for the Celtics and living in Boston would have been great.

So, the Celtics picking Yabusele in the 16th pick was a last minute move, I guess.

What do you think about this? Are you glad that we picked Yabusele, or had you prefered picking Hernangomez instead?

(sorry my english)

That is pretty interesting. Feels like Ainge just had a list of stash prospects ready at 16 and was going to take whoever he felt was BPA from that list.

That's exactly what I think happened and I'd much rather have Hernangomez over Yabusele.

Kid can really shoot the ball. But we should give Yabs a chance to show his stuff before we call this a loss.

Confirms what one of our insiders (bfb?) posted on draft night. I was bummed, but fully ready for Yabs.

Me too. Happy to wait and see how Yabusele works out as a consolation prize though.

Yes, this was reported on draft day. Ainge really liked Hernangomez.

I do not think Yabs is NBA material, so I am disappointed Denver stole him....

Ouch. This mean's Yabu was 3rd on Ainge's list of draft and stash players. I believe he also wanted Papagiannis, who was taken by the Kings at 12.

Every team ranks draft prospects 1-60, and crosses them off as they are selected. Yabu was next on the list (assuming the reports are correct that Ainge would have taken Hernangomez).

And I doubt if Ainge was focused on "stash" candidates. You can stash an NCAA player too, it just becomes a little more difficult.

Too bad Ainge didn't take his older brother Willie in 2015 when he had the chance, instead of RJ Hunter or Jordan Mickey.

What NCAA prospect could they have taken at 16 and stashed in Europe/China? Name me one American-born player who was drafted in the top 16 and didn't immediately sign an NBA contract.

Cool to see the innuendo that was posted on here confirmed by Juancho himself. Would have preferred him to Yabusele. Hopefully Yabs can quash any regret with his play on the court.

In 2016, none. But there were none worth taking. The only players drafted after Yabusele who did anything in 2016 were Brogdon and Labissiere (after Boogie was traded). Caris LeVert looked ok, but even he barely played 20 minutes on the NBA's worst team.

RJ Hunter looked like a keeper at first. I have my doubts about French SUlly but if he can hit the boards and hit the 3 and doesn't suck too bad on defense he should be able to make the team and actually help. I don't like the fact that he's another undersized player for his position but its hard to argue with Danny right now given the turnaround after the first two bulls games. Look at what houston did to San Antonio last night and what GS has done the past few years. As long as the 3 is falling, life is good.

McCaw had a comparable rookie year to Jaylen Brown, as did Luwawu. Korkmaz or Zagorac were possible stash candidates.

Taking Yabu is a defensible move. Trading #31 & #36 for a late first (likely a 2nd, given the protections) is not, especially when the likely ROY was available at those picks and Ainge was reportedly itching to select him.

As a UVA fan I love Brogdon but I think it is well worth passing on him to get a future first. May not pan out but fortunes change and future picks sometimes surprise. Brogdon is a quality player but his ceiling is pretty low.

Scale has said this a dozen times starting on the night of the draft.

I agree he's not likely to be a future star, but he's a cheap, cost controlled asset comparable to our best 3 role players (Smart, Bradley, and Crowder) and he would have filled a position of need better than Rozier, Young, or Green.

He may work out, but it always seemed like Yabs was not Ainge's first choice at 16. What I don't get is why he didn't take Zizic first and Yabs later. Both were apparently stash-agreeable, and almost all the draft gurus (on this forum and off) had Zizic rated much higher. He certainly seems like the stronger prospect at this point also. Glad he was there at 23.

OK so the plan was always to draft international players and stash them. NCAA players taken before like pick 50 are never stashed and alwasys sign NBA contracts immediately. I bet the last top-16 NCAA player who didn't immediately sign a contract was Larry Bird.

Josh Huestis was drafted in the first round out of Stanford and was stashed in the NBADL for a year before signing with OKC.
