SI.com Hayward #16, Irving #21, Horford #30

Post#1 » by KGboss » Wed Sep 13, 2017 5:05 pm

Sports Illustrated is doing their annual top 100 list and it's awful.

Irving at 21?

Hayward better than Irving?

HORFORD I agree with but damn, sports illustrated is a joke.

They have Lowry and Conley ahead of Irving.

Perplexed.

I don't think those ratings are crazy.

Biggest issue is Al. I'd have Horford 6-8 spots higher.

Irving could be a spot or two higher.

Hayward is about where he belongs.

But it's not nuts.

Kyrie at 21? I can't think of another PG I'd rather have in the league. And other than KD, I can't think of another closer I'd rather have.
These idiots will declare Kyrie as a top 10 player by May and top 5 by June.

I don't have a huge issue with those ratings, though when I look at it Lowry/Conley/Lillard/Wall all being ahead of Irving is pretty dumb - the only one that's even arguable is Wall and he's going to continue to disappoint in the playoffs until he becomes better in the half court. If you look at 50-100 things get really absurd. Avery Bradley is like 40+ spots ahead of KCP, and I consider them to be fairly close.

The biggest issue is they don't even explain the criteria. If we're talking about who's the best right now, then why is KAT as high as 14? If we're talking about the best players projecting into the future, then he should be much higher.

The ratings are solid. Danny is gambling that Kyrie and Hayward can and will each improve under Brad, and rate higher a year from now. Al is what he is.

The last time I read Sports Illustrated was probably 1996. I've rarely ever clicked on their website, either.

Which is why Kyrie had to leave. People can't mentally separate how good he is from Lebron because most people didn't watch the Cavs until Bron came back.

There aren't 5 players in the league I'd rather have in the Finals let alone 20.

I'm fine with it. Hayward was a much better all around player last season. Kyrie has a lot to prove.

Since the Irving deal, the impact of Hayward, now the C's best all-around player, has been understated.

And Stevens is going to know how to get more out of him still.

Beyond shocked that they ranked Horford so accurately, possibly even generously? Where Jokic in comparison?

Damian Lillard has proven he can lead a team and run an offense more than Kyrie at this point, very similar players though. Kyrie has a lot to prove this year, I'm fine with people ranking him lower than I personally would.

As for Conley, he's more efficient, better at running an offense/passing/defense. Not saying that I agree with SI's conclusion, just that he does have advantages over Kyrie.

Kyrie was young. Lillard proves he can carry a team alongside CJ McCollum to low 40 win seasons and getting bounced in 4-5 games in the first round. Kyrie has shown a lot more than Lillard ever has in big games. And no before anyone brings up Lebron, Kyrie was dropping 30-40 purely on isolation plays against teams like the Warriors. Mike Conley is someone who I always found overrated, he has some advantages over Kyrie for sure like defense but he to me is a safe player where you can't count on him to have huge offensive games to help push a team over. He's a solid all star at best imo, not someone who is a top 15-20 player in this league.

Sports Illustrated............the only thing keeping them alive is their Swimsuit Issue. That's pretty much the only issue I ever stop to look at while I'm at a newsstand. Other than that, I feel like they're kind of irrelevant nowadays.

One thing being overlooked here is Smart should clearly be in the top 100 over guys like Lou Williams and Elfrid Payton.

But how do guys like Simmons and Fultz make the list when they have yet to play a single game?
