The Boston Celtics are hiring former WNBA and Olympic champion Kara Lawson as an assistant coach, league sources tell ESPN.

Lawson, an ESPN analyst, also has been a television analyst for the Washington Wizards for the past three seasons and has contemplated several different coaching opportunities in recent years before landing with Boston now.

Lawson joins a growing group of women's coaches on NBA benches this season, including San Antonio's Becky Hammon, Dallas' Jenny Boucek and Cleveland's Lindsay Gottlieb.

Awesome! Great seeing women get opportunity in the NBA. Won’t be long before we have a female head coach.

What? A girl who never played in the NBA? Some unknown college coach from Rhode Island and now this? What is the Celtics coaching staff coming to? Fire Stevens immediately!

Wish Celtics were first team to hire a woman just because of franchise’s history of being out front. That said I like this hire - she is charismatic, is a winner, and learned from one of all time best college coaches.

Kara is legit. Super nice in person. Very knowledgeable about the game. We Wiz fans were very lucky to have her call the games the last couple years. She was stepping into a legend's shoes (Phil Chenier) and did a great job.

Yep, she and the other new guy could both be very good. But where is the NBA vet (and especially big man!) player or coaching experience that IMO should really be added to his staff? And yeah, should probably be another African-American, too.

Perk would be good as a Big's coach.
Not sure they have to be African-American, though.
