5 reasons this team has the potential to surprise many this year!
1. New players haven't learned Brad's defensive/offensive schemas yet -
50% of the team has been replaced. You could tell yesterday was a free for all. It will take at least till all-star break to gel on defense and offense. The finished product will be frightening to opponents.
2. Our depth. Top to bottom, our team is one of the most talented young teams in the league -
I'm not saying we can beat top heavy teams like Lebron/AD, Khawai/George, Giannis/Middleton, Westbrook/Harden. However, we can come at teams in waves, and depending on who is hot, give them more minutes.
3. The Celtics finally seem to like each other, have good chemistry, body language, good leadership -
An with good leadership comes listening and respecting what Stevens has to say, maximizing your effort each night, and training hard to get better.
4. Steven's advanced analytics team doesn't have any data yet -
It will take at least till all star break to collect it, and make it useful. For example which line ups play well together against certain match ups. This is part of the reason every year post all-star break our team always elevates their play.
5. We are the **** Celtics! Respect! -
Make no mistake, tempered expectations or not, we are going for a hail mary, we are young, and we have no ceiling. The only ceiling is the one this young Celtics group places on themselves.

Did Brown and Tatum look happy? Did they look like they were a part of the good body language? I thought Tatum was amazing but he looked like a lone wolf out there to me. Brown looked like he forced his own game to detriment of team at time - but overall looked pretty good. I think this is an obvious and overstated concern but it bears watching especially with a hungrier Hayward looking to reestablish himself as an all-star talent.

That starting five hopefully isn’t our starting five because it’s five guys who want to score, and four of them in the same ways.

can't believe the rebuild and "asset" gathering resulted in Kemba Walker and Enes Kanter

um, what? the asset gathering yielded tatum, brown, and to a lesser extent smart and langford. we didn't spend any assets on kemba, we basically just traded him for kyrie via cap space.
please try and understand just a tiny bit about the celtics before coming and posting on this board.

1. No moody, enigmatic Kyrie. No more eggshell-walking and jerk-pleasing.
2. Related to #1: Brad can coach again the way we know he can. Think Isaiah days.
3. No more excuses for Gordon to not be more aggressive, although people underrated his impact last (regular) season.
4. No AD trade/pursuit hanging over everyone's heads, including/especially Danny's.
5. Tatum, Timelord, Tacko. Betting my left nut the first comes up with an All-Star type season. The second one growing into a valuable contributor is more of a fantasy that maybe has a chance to become a reality post-ASB. Well, the latter you just gotta ride that wave, baby. From a fan support and team morale standpoint, having Tacko on the team can't hurt.

"Hail marry"? Aren't Gordon and Daniel the only married C's players at this point?

They are the same person, not married. You got it wrong.
Good assessment:
PLO wrote:Tatum played OK - took advantage of a few mismatches - decent on the defensive end. He is what we thought he was going into the season - a technically very proficient player operating close to his career ceiling as a rookie.

I didn't know that. They make an adorable nontraditional couple, IMO, although between them there is a bit of a melanin-deficiency.
hope that chemistry translates to the court.

Re: 5 reasons this team has the potential to surprise many this year!
This whole offseason has been cluster of either too optimistic or too pessimistic. Our fan base can't seem to find the middle sometimes. And i'm not arguing against anything in this thread, just the forum in general. I got blasted for saying we were an 6-10 seed when Kyrie and Horford both announced they were leaving and the sports guys were saying Vuc and Rozier to replace. Then we signed Kemba and Kanter which I had no idea we had a chance for until reload said it. I then said 3-6 seed. And people blast that because "our defense will be so bad we will win 38 games".
I mean, both extremes could happen. We could have it go all wrong and be in the lotto, and it could go all right and be the 3rd seed, but the most likely outcome is 4-5 seed and 45ish wins.
Brad missed the playoffs 1 year with a crap of all crap rosters and still couldn't get worse than 6th worst team and made the playoffs the next year as a 7 seed before any free agents signed with us. Our team probably has the talent of a 6th seed but likely end up at 4 with CBS.

We won 49 games last year. This year Vegas has us at 50 over/under. Im in the minority maybe but I think we have a better team this year than last.
Irving is addiction by subtraction, Horford was getting older and really was a perimeter player, Hayward wasn't 100%.
Now Brown/Tatum have more experience. Lots of youth and depth like Grant Williams/ Edwards. If Tatum turns border line all star, and Hayward rebounds watch out. We could go on run.

Yup, all that can happen. Most likely though is 45ish wins and a 4-5 seed.

I don't know if they are going to "surprise" us this year, but if they "entertain" us (provide us with a team that is actually "fun" to watch), it will be a much better year than last year.
Make the team fun to watch first, then focus on winning. Besides, teams that have fun playing together normally play at a much higher level.

Re: 5 reasons this team has the potential to surprise many this year!
I still think people are overreacting to the hole at the starting 5. I think Ainge/Stevens let Rob/Pourier/Theiss show what they can do in the starting 5 until December and if none solidifies themselves as the defensive/rebounding anchor we need, a guy like Nerlens Noel should be available on the cheap and would be the perfect fit on both ends in our starting 5. I love our 4 starters and their upside, and I think our bench is going to be great.
All we need to solidify our rotation is a defensive-oriented big like Noel (or potentially Robert Williams once he gets comfortable with a bigger role and the speed of the game). Kemba is an All-NBA caliber player. A healthy Hayward is an All-Star caliber player. Tatum has all-star upside and seems like he’s on the path to reaching it sooner rather than later. Smart is one of the best defenders in the game while Jaylen has the potential to be as well on top of having untapped offensive upside.
Grant Williams looks like a day 1 impact player. Carson Edwards looks like the microwave scorer and bulldog defender we expected Rozier to become. Ojeleye is another versatile top-flight defender off the bench. Langford possesses substantial 2-way upside as an insurance option. Kanter has his flaws, but he will be surrounded by talented defenders off the bench and will feast offensively and on the boards against bench bigs. Theiss/Pourier/Rob give us several decent depth options at the 5 if none takes the necessary steps to earn to the starting nod.
Also, our chemistry seems to be spot on and the locker room issues that plagued us last season should be a thing of the past. Considering traditional rim-protecting big men are always available on the FA/trade market and the fact that we’ve got spare assets and tradable contracts, I think we’ve got a lot more upside than most fans seem to think.

This is likes the most silliest measure of team's happyness, chemistry I've seen. "Hey, Brown and Tatum looked at each other and smiled. Look, The bench cheered after a good play. The vibes and chemistry is so much better than last year." As if last year we didn't have all the videos of good vibes from training camp and players cheering on the bench

Not later in the season. There are actually video clips about Irving's facial expressions from beginning of year smiling, to neutral mid year, to scowling by end of year like he didn't want to be there.
Even Scal said, what i want to see is when a team mate falls down, if they run over to help them up not because they have to, but because you can tell they care about their team mate.
Words, are just words, but when you see something in action you can easily tell if their is good chemistry or not.

Didn't know we are in later season. Let's see what will happen when some losses start to pile up and frustration kicks in. That's when leadership, chemistry is tested. As I said, it was also all smiles and happyness early last season.

Need to trade for Adams or KAT and it will put us over the top in the East. As it stands, we may crack top 4 but without a true BIG to slow down Giannis or Embidd, there's zero chance we battle for the East
