I dunno why ratings are down, but maybe the NBA really needs its own slot and going against football season is death. Basketball in June gets great ratings. In early October? Maybe not.

Same reason Baseball, Golf, Tennis and Hockey are down similar amounts. Bars generally aren't open, TV users are shrinking and sports are all competing now.

Weird how one group of people only point out the decline about the NBA. I wonder if theres something different amongst the people who play in the NBA vs the NHL or MLB. Or Golf. I wonder if its related....

Stanley cup finals averaged under a million viewers I believe. But politics.

Why I hate LeBron outside of the game? If you have to go on national tv after winning a championship and demand respect, you don't deserve it.

The Owners have been wanting to move the season to a Dec 25th start, for a few years now.
This is their chance to test it out.

The only thing that they risk is International competitions, like the Olympics.

This! The dude is so insecure and self unaware. What is more concerning is that so many fans and apparently players too don't see this at all.

I realized most of my posts today have been kind of negative. I think LeBron winning another title -- even more than the Lakers winning it -- is really pissing me off. Which kind of surprised me. At this point in my life sports rarely brings out my anger. There's just more important things to worry about.

But I have to admit that I blame LeBron James for the current state of the league. The guy has manipulated his way to the city and players he's wanted in a way we've never seen before. He inspired other stars to start doing the same (KD --> GSW, AD --> LA, KD/KI to BKN, etc...) and, IMO, we're going to see more and more of this going forward. I mean even when LeBron retires, Klutch Sports will still be there, pulling this ****.

Ugh.

couldn't quote from the other thread, but disinformation said this, and I want to agree with this 100%

Yup i agree! Lebron is just a drama queen that is really bothered by what others think of him. He keeps saying things and contradicts himself all the time. He said he doesn’t care about mvp’s no more, and yet got hurt and mad he didn’t get it wtf! He says he doesn’t care about legacy, and yet declared himself the goat
He even said he should have won both DPOy and mvp the same year, just because Giannis was primed to win both. What a phony queen!

Its legitimately everything:

NFL down 10%:

NHL down nearly 30%:

US Open [Tennis] down 45%:

US Open [Golf] down 55%:

MLB WildCard games struggle to get 1M viewers, was above 4M previous years:

https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/two-of-mlbs-first-four-wild-card-games-drew-under-a-million-viewers.html

Yankees playoffs game down 40% year over year:

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2019/10/mlb-division-series-ratings-yankees-astros-dodgers/

Hell, even the presidential debates were down ~15% from
2016 [from 84M to 73M]:

Pretty much, only the NBA gets criticized. The same people started to with the NFL, but it became pretty obvious that they were wrong so they dropped that one quick.

Theres only one reason that people single out the NBA for its ratings decline while failing to mention its happening legitimately everywhere else...

Ratings down. 5.6. The football game did twice the number .

No, I’m asking why you’re calling him Lewoke. And I hope by saying he broke the nba, you mean by having AD force his way there.

I'm personally partial to LeMao or Qing James, but that's just me.

The NBA did go against the NFL twice so yeah they are going to lose that night every time. The other 4 games had no competition and the ratings still were not great. Regardless the rating are down for all sports.

As for the NBA. I think it is because of a couple of things:
No one wanted to watch a series where everyone knew the outcome before it started. Plus the series sucked.

No one cares about Miami. Hell their own fans don't. Lets not forget, the first year this team had Lebron, Wade and Bosh, the heat had to start the embarrassing fan up campaign telling people how to cheer and get prizes for getting to the game on time.

Team Lebron has been in the finals 9 of the last 10 years. People are sick of him(or maybe I would like to think that)

To be fair, NFL dominated the NBA Game 6.

I think the bigger issue for ratings is people don't want the Lakers to win and the reffing is sooooooooo bad. Like, reviews and terrible calls every second make the game unwatchable at times.

Everything is down. Some less than others, but everything is down, including the political debates.

It isnt due to politics. Its due to too many competing sports happening at once and football trumps all. Bars across the country are generally closed which also greatly hurts the numbers.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I think politics was not the major issue at all.

I think the factors were covid and it's effect on ratings for sports (like having no crowds), partially people are tired of seeing Lebron and the Lakers in the finals, partially the finals was considered over when Miami's injuries happened which didn't help, and the reffing is just awful. I'm telling you man, people don't want to watch refs control the game and calls for reviews every 5 seconds.

you're in a NBA related sub and thread. Why would people talk about those other sports in here? Outside of the NBA bubble people ARE talking about lower ratings and reasons for it. And those other sports, like the NBA, also got political and pissed off fans who just wanted an escape. Maybe getting lectured by hypocritical millionaire athletes rubs fans the wrong way? It's not the whole reason but pretending it's not A reason is being disingenuous. The victim mentality is such a weak look btw

Cable is dying 150 for **** you don't watch? Also every thing is down especially when you can just get an app for whatever network you want I have PS4 I watch my Celtics games for free 50 for internet cut off cable and phone and Haven't looked back since. Also like or not trump decided to take on every sports Network and anyone else his blind followers took it to heart, examples: I ain't gonna watch racing no more without my Confederate blanky.. pence leaving a game cause of kneeling, his tweets etc.. dude sucks and unfortunately has a decent amount of followers. But older people regardless of trump fan or not don't like politics in sports or movies because of a system of the upbringing these people already think they get payed to much anyway. Unfortunately I believe we need to see blm on everything candy wrappers, commercials, billboards, hash tags etc
. I'll leave with not thinking bostoncouch is racist but older perspective. But digest this fact since 2012 98.3% of cops that have killed have gotten off with nothing. Over 11,000 deaths of white black Latin and your going to tell me less than 2% get convicted or even a fine? That is denial that is systemic. And all trump does is fan the damn flame. Every female, every minority and every veteran should vote against him because he has attacks those 3 with ease and arrogance. So yeah a combo of all that is why ratings are down.
