But Begarin already has an NBA body. He needs basketball development, but not physical development. Madar needs both, although he is more polished than Begarin.

There are other undrafted players out there who are playing Summer league with teams that will not sign them. Yves Pons is an interesting guy, just to name one.

The Celtics can also have up to 6 Exhibit 10 players.

Pons signed with the Grizzlies yesterday:

But yeah, I get your point. We could always scoop up some other UDFA guy who doesn't get signed by another team..

Yes, you are right. And any amount over $775K would use up cap space or all or part of an available exception.

As for Pons, he has an Exhibit 10, so th3ey can either sign him or pay him the agreed bonus and let him go after training camp.

Jeez, sounds like a done deal that Madar is gonna go back to Israel.

Either:

a) he goes nuts in the last few summer league games to earn a roster spot (even then he still probably only gets a roster spot if Edwards, smart or Dunn is moved)..

Or

b) We could buy him out of israel contract, give him 2-way contract. The buyout is $700K, which is less than $775K (the amount where if we pay more than that it goes against cap space)..but this article also says that Madar can just pay the buyout himself or the team could pay a certain amount and Madar pays the rest:
https://heavy.com/sports/boston-celtics/yam-madar-loses-arbitration/

c) he goes back to Israel for 1 more yr

Option C seems the most likely at this point. We'll see..

If we pay the buyout, it is for a 15 man roster spot. You can pay up to 775k without it having an effect on cap space (dipping into the mid level), but you can't make the 700k payment and then sign him to a 2 way deal. It has to be a standard NBA contract.

Unless he has 700k lying around to pay himself, the only option is for us to clear a 15 man roster spot, pay the buyout, and sign him to a 2 year minimum deal. If we want more years on the deal (we usually do), we would have to use a portion of the full mid level and hard cap ourselves. If we did that, Schroder would probably be saying WTF?

I would be really surprised if Madar is with the Celtics this year.

I won't make any judgment on a player and his current ability until I see a bigger sample size. Most on here agree (not all) that PP doesn't need to play summer league anymore. I would really love to see Madar get a full 30ish min game. Let him get comfortable and get in a groove. Regardless of what he could or can't do, he needs to get stronger whether here or in Israel. But coming in for a few minutes is no way to make a proper assessment of what he can do.

This whole, he looks bad on a handful of possessions = therefor he must not be ready is a tough and unfair way to analyze anyone.

Agreed. The footage we've all been watching for the past year of his games in Israel = much larger sample size of 30+ games averaging 30+ mins per game. That's a much bigger sample size than 2 summer league games playing 16 mins a game with teammates he'd never played with, in a country he's never been in (other than a basketball camp a few yrs ago).

I agree that we should try and give him some more mins these next few games to get a better idea of what he can do and allow him a better chance to show his stuff.

Feel better now? Now that you trashed a 20 yr old guy on the internet, a guy who has put his blood, sweat and tears into playing the game of basketball and trying to be the best player he can be so he can try and reach his dream of playing in the NBA - a guy who's far better at basketball than you'll ever be.

I hope trashing him makes you feel better about yourself.

Lol it’s not that deep bro. Dude just basically said Yam is being overhyped and simply isn’t that good for the NBA. Sure he has worked his whole life for it and has a strong work ethic but shows how hard it is to be a player in the league

Yam is a nice player but doesn't move the needle.

47th picks have a very low hit rate for ever being even serviceable NBA players. i like that Yam has showed some things that make him serviceable. he is not physically outmatched in the nba, though he needs to get stronger. he has a decent shot, is a good defender, and seems to understand the game. he looks lost out there trying to run a team, but he's 19 and has been in our system for like 2 weeks. i'm not going to write him off because of that. he's never going to be an allstar but he definitely has a chance to be a solid nba rotation player someday. that would be a huge win at #47.

i wish he could do a 2-way to acclimate more to the US game and our system but it looks like that's not really feasible with the buyout rules. in which case going back to israel is probably the best option, especially since we signed schroeder.

There is no PT for him here with Schroeder signed and it makes sense cap wise to wait to bring him over, He has some nice potential to be a rotation player in the NBA, he needs to pack on some more muscle, he does have some nice upside a guy like pritchard who lacks due to his athleticsm. We will see how the next couple years go, no boston for him this year but perhaps next year when likley there will be some major roster shakeups.

2 summer league games where he only played 16 mins a game coming off the bench is not even close to a large enough sample size to come to such a conclusion.

Not to mention Madar is playing with guys he had only practiced with for a week (whereas some of them like Edwards and Langford have been playing together for 2 yrs) while playing in a foreign country, against players you've never gone against while at times playing out of position (sometimes when he was out there they had Pritchard at the 1 and Madar at the 2).

Still, out of the 2 games he's played, 1 of them he actually played really well. It's funny how everyone is just writing him off after a rough game vs Denver, completely dismissing how good and how electric he was in the first game vs ATL..

Whether Madar movers the needle or not, I think we can all agree that the worst thing for his development would be to spend a year as a practice player behind Smart, Schroder and Pritchard without getting any in-game experience (except occasionally in garbage time). If the D-league is out, the best thing is for him to return to Israel unless Hapoel Tel Aviv relents. And I don't see much chance of that happening since they went to court to keep him.

I think that Madar supporters will get their wish. He will probably get more minutes over the next few games. I am assuming that our goal in the summer league is to evaluate our potential talent. It would be be nice to win the whole damn thing! But, the evaluations mean more from my perspective.

90% of this forum is bashing 20-something year olds who are 100x times in ball than us.

Wait til GWill front rims his first layup of the year and watch me go innnnn!!!

Facts. Throwing him as 15th man on the roster is going to do nothing but hamper his development, for his sake and for ours, we don't need another wildly inconsistent player looking to make their way in the nba

Showcasing superfluous players is also a priority, sucks when they suck though.
