The Team is shorter than last year

Post#1 » by Jammer » Sun Nov 22, 2020 6:42 pm

There is not much height at Center or PG. I'm waitng for the day Ainge has Tremont Waters jump center to start the game.

Starters (pre-draft measurement without shoes unless noted)
6' 8.25" Daniel Theis
6' 8.25" Jayson Tatum with shoes
6' 5.25" Jaylen Brown
6' 2" Marcus Smart
5' 11.5" Kemba Walker

Backups
6' 9" Tristan Thompson (says he grew since his pre-draft measurement of 6' 7.5" at age 20 + 2 months. I know his hair grew)
6' 8" Robert Williams III (Celtics website)
6' 6" Aaron Nesmith (Vanderbilt website)
6' 5.75" Grant Williams
6' 4" Javonte Green (Celtics website)
6' 0.25" Jeff Teague

Reserves & Two-way players
7' 5.25" Tacko Fall
6' 5.25" Semi Ojeleye
6' 4.5" Romeo Langford
6' 0.5" Payton Pritchard
5' 10.75" Carson Edwards
5' 9.5" Tremont Waters

I hope they can get smaller and faster yet. Bludgeon teams with those 6'8" wings and bigs and I will be a happy man. I could do without all the six footers, but I suppose they have a role in the regular season still.

Interesting though, I think they're going to go a little more 2 big man units this year than they have in years past. Will also help if Langford can show enough to garner trust as a ballhandler.
Thanks Brad for answering my ad,

But after KP, your C play? You broke my heart Fredo.

Thompson is 6'9 without shoes, remember they had to update the heights of everyone last year, he is 6'9

Comment accepted. Grew 1.5 inches after pre-draft measurement at age 20 + 2 months. Still think some of that might have been hair, rounding and/or agent pushing for higher height in program.

yeah but thompson and smart in the starting lineup bring a lot more toughness. and thompson is a much better rebounder than theis.

When do you think Thompson will be given a starting role? First regular game? Or is that something that he will have to earn? His payday suggests he's the opening night starter, but I question if he deserves that role without first proving himself deserving. Just wondering, here. Management of team relationships and personalities matter. Thompson obviously has already been told his estimated minutes and rotation position (earn it vs. specific answer of starter, backup, reserve) or he wouldn't have signed here.

i dunno about starter but i expect thompson will be the finisher. if not the first game then shortly thereafter. i expect he will earn the minutes. the reason is rebounding, and toughness to go against larger C's. regardless of who starts i expect TT to play more minutes than theis or timelord, though depending on matchups theis may do better.

Thompson is officially listed as 6'9". Shorter by an inch vs. Kanter.
Teague is officially listed as 6'3". Same height as Wanamaker.
If Nesmith is 6'6", then he's shorter by an inch compared to Hayward.

We lost about a whole foot going from Poirier to Pritchard.

I think Brown is at the very least 6'6 right now, I actually think he might be 6'7. Was that 6'5.25 from last year?
Good assessment:

Why the hell is Javonte a backup and Langford a reserve?
Robert Horry is better than MJ, because everybody knows that 7>6.

Jaylen is listed 6'6" in the NBA stats website. Same height as Semi and Grant.

Length, quickness and athleticism more important than height. Unless you are Tacko. 7-7 is a problem.

I do not care about height itself. I care about functionality.

Wanamaker and Teague are both listed at 6'3". But I felt comfortable with Wanamaker playing SG next to Kemba. I don't feel the same way about Tegaue. There's no difference in height, but we lost functionality there. I am ok with this because I wasn't a fan of Wanamaker offensively and would prefer not to use him in 2 PG lineups like that anyway. I like Teague's offensive initiation skills better and think that's our need.

Kanter is taller than Thompson so that is a loss on height. But Kanter was not defensively playable in the playoffs. Thompson will be. We lost some height on paper if you just list names, but in terms of functionality we gained another player capable of playing the 5 spot. This is a gain on height for me, even if it's a loss in raw data form.

Nesmith for Hayward is a height downgrade and I think it's somewhat relevant. Hayward could defend multiple spots, including 4s as needed. We lost some switch-ability here. I think we have other guys to line rotations up with that will make it work but it's a loss.

Going from Poirier to Pritchard is a huge height loss because just the way roster spots shook out we went from a 4th C to another guard. I don't really care though. Poirier never played. His height served no functional purpose to us.

All in all, I think the gain of Thompson as a defensively playable C outweighs the switchability loss with Hayward to Nesmith. So overall, I am not concerned with "losses" on that front.

Langford has not played much, and when he has, he has been pitiful offensively. His shot is broke, so even with a healed wrist, it may remain unreliable...

All fair points but he's still ahead of Javonte. They literally gave Langford playoff minutes while Javonte got none. If Langford is healthy there's no reason right now to have Green ahead of him on a depth chart. Maybe a strong camp performance changes that but none of us would know about that yet.

But Tatum is fast approaching Tacko’s height so we will be taller than last year
