Maybe you can argue that's his peer group but wouldn't you rather have either than Evan? Galo has some injury concerns but is thriving as a stretchy 4 and Boggie has more upside than Fournier and has been great after a slow start too. They were also both overpaid by the same team with buckets of salary cap space to get rid of.
I take it that's Celts17Pride's point: we shouldn't expect Fournier to return on a payroll-friendly deal.

Reading the market, there’s significant competition at Fournier’s position. Both hardaway and Norman Powell are similar in age and type of player. Not a ton of teams need/want a slightly older decent shooting guard. Spurs I’d watch out for if they miss out on Collins or other rfa’s. Timing is on our side there. Also pretty clear Fournier wants a long term deal because of his family, seems to value stability.
I’d say somewhere around 4/60 or 65 seems reasonable

I think that it will end up being declining. But I'm thinking something more along the lines of 20, 19, 18, 17.

You might be right, especially if he keeps lighting it up at the Olympics.
However, I think a variable here is what other moves the C's make / what other moves the C's think they will make. Based on those moves, is Fournier going to be a no. 3, 4 or 5 scoring option? Is he going to start or come off the bench? That might play a factor in how much the team is willing to offer. Like if he's going to start and be the no. 3 (or at worst no. 4) option, then sure, $20 mil during the 1st yr is justified. But if he's gonna come off the bench and be the no. 5 option, then that would probably be overpaying for what you're asking him to do..

The Celtics would obviously love to have Fournier back after they used two draft picks to acquire him back in March. However, offering him long-term money would be an obstacle in getting another star in Boston via trade or free agency. The good news for Boston’s front office is that Fournier’s market is rather limited with just eight teams currently projected to have the ability to open up over $15 million of cap room.
The Celtics don’t want to lose Fournier as an asset for nothing so they could play this a few different ways. There’s the possibility of offering him a short-term contract that overpays him for one year or at least offers the team an option on year two. Fournier gets good value in the present and can hit the market with more suitors again next season while Boston keeps their door open for free agency.
The other options include signing him to a very team-friendly long-term deal that would be easy to move if needed or simply using him in a sign-and-trade and get back an expiring contract as a replacement. All of this will likely be dependent upon what Fournier’s priorities are heading into his free agency. Does he prioritize a long-term commitment over money? That answer will signal whether the Celtics can keep him for next year while also maintaining long-term flexibility. Fournier’s demand on the open market will play a major factor here.

i'm not sure if i want fournier back except if it's a cap friendly deal.
but i am sure that the olympics will have pretty much zero bearing on that. it's a different game. it's not like GMs are going to go, whoa, that 9-year vet is way better than i thought since he lit up a glorified euroleague tourney.

It depends on who goes where only a few teams have both 15 million in cap space and an interest in fornier, if the knicks for example sign powell or lowery he is not a fit. He does not seem to fit the spurs timeline, Heat maybe, but they have Hero/Robinson. Grizzlies and Mavs, maybe.
I say its 50 50, getting richardson for basically free is a little insurance. An eye has to be put towards next offseason though, I truly belive that the plan is to get to close to enough cap space to absorb a max contract so that it can be done cheaply with a sign and trade. Target is probably Beal, but might be someone else.

I hope you're right. If we bring back Fournier, add a vet in Richardson off the bench and potentially Payton taking a step forward which is very possible and Aaron continuing to develop, we should be dang great.

I'd be very surprised if we resign Fournier now. As I said I think if you give Romeo and Nesmith a chance to battle it out for Evan's minutes, you'll get similar overall production, especially if you take defense into account. Now we've added JRich into that mix too. I'm not worried about losing Fournier, he is totally replaceable.

I'm actually amazed how many people want to resign him. At the deadline people were furious that we only got Fournier for the TPE, now plenty of people are willing to give him a long term deal (albeit team friendly deal). Fournier is the defenition of stop gap filler, you have him for a year in hope of solid production and few mistakes, but you don't want to be the team who depends on him and sign long term.
Let him go get his paycheck, i don't want the Celtics to be the team who has $18 million on the salary sheet for 'OK' production. Because these dollars he gets will never be the center piece of a blockbuster trade, you have to pay to move a contract like this down the road. Just not worth it.
