Whether this trade happens or not I feel like it might be time for a quick check-in:

Damien Lillard was All-NBA this year as he was for the last 4 years in a row and 5 of the last 6 (only missing due to injury). He's a better player than Jaylen Brown right now, yes or no?

Lillard is the 11th best player in the league at worst. Better than Tatum.

There is no argument whatsoever to put Jaylen on his level right now. None.

Yes, and I expect him to be at least a level better for the next three years.

I have Dame at 9, personally. (Tatum at either 11 or 12).

Having two guys who will play like top ten players next year would give us a leg up on every team in the league with the exception of the Nets, and maybe the Bucks. Obviously need to see what the Warriors do with their chips, too.

Okay, I'm not goin crazy. Lately, it seems like there might be a question but I really didn't think there was.

On a related note, if we could get him without having to give up Smart, that would help. Then maybe re-sign Fournier.

Next question:

How would you defend a Damien Lillard/Jayson Tatum pick n pop with Smart and FournHub on the wing with either Al or Rob on the court?

You couldn’t. Dame and Tatum have been the second and third most dangerous pull-up from three guys in the league the last two years. So defenders have to play up on them 30 feet from the hoop (35 in TDames case lol), it would open up an incredible amount of spacing.

Then their gravity?

“Tatum has some of the best scoring gravity in the league, ranking in the 92nd percentile in rim gravity, in the 96th percentile in midrange gravity, and in the 98th percentile in 3-point gravity.”

https://hardwoodhoudini.com/2021/07/12/boston-celtics-jayson-tatum-improve/

Dame had even better scoring gravity lol, having those two would almost be unfair, offensively. Then Al/TL both bring them spacing in different ways, Al with the pop, and Rob as an elite lob threat. Then when the defense reacts to them, Smart/Fournier would be wide open basically non stop.

I need to settle down, getting too excited at the thought of them offensively.

I think Dame is better than Jaylen but between the contract and age it's not even close. Keep Jaylen and build with him and Tatum imo

Yes easily.
He is better than Tatum too.

Even as a guy who was out on Harden last year, there really isn't a question that you deal Jaylen for Lillard.

People can go around and around on it if they want to, but it's not a legitimate discussion.

Not just all nba; first or second team all nba for that period.

Right now using the 2007-2008 Celtics championship team as an example:

1. Pierce = Tatum
2. KG = Vacant (Celtics can fill this with a Lillard, Beal etc.)
3. R Allen = Jaylen Brown

Jaylen Brown could possibly be a #2 guy but he has yet to prove it. Has to improve in other areas of the game or he is just like Ray Allen, a scorer.
Comes down to is it easier to fill the #2 slot or the #3 slot. I think we all know the answer to that question.
That's how I see this.

*************************************
There is no KG - no big on his level is available, Beal isn’t it.

**************************************
Doesn't have to be a big. Pierce and KG were clearly #1/#2. Ray Allen was #3

***************************************
I don’t really think there’s a comparison there go be made. I get it, but it’s completely different circumstances and you’re neglecting fit for the sake of looking at scoring options. Ray is, after Steph now, the second best shooter of all time and KG is probably a top-5 all around defensive player of all that.

The 2008 team didn’t have options.. it had a team that just fit.

Lost the user tags, sorry. Yeah, it's great to have three stars. But KG wasn't just a big, he was a hall of famer at the tail end of his prime - right next to Tim Duncan as the best 4/5 in the league. If you could get a KG-caliber player for Jaylen, go ahead. Giannis, a healthy Anthony Davis, that's basically it. Garnett was really really really really. good - not just a "star".

I'm not even sure Lillard or Beal are as good as Ray, who was our third option. Neither defends as well as Pierce did at that point in his career.

I think this and the contract situation is what the "should we trade Jaylen for Dame" question comes down to.

Dame is actually signed for 4 years while Jaylen is only signed for 3. In today's nba, I feel pretty scared to just assume jaylen will stay here past the three years so if you work under the 4 years vs 3 years assumption, the chance that Dame is better than Jaylen the next three years is relatively high.

But the other factor is the salary difference. We don't know what ownership's limit on paying the tax is so without that information it's really tough to know whether the salary difference will have a negative impact on the roster building around Dame and Tatum if we trade Brown for him.

I actually think the "should we trade Jaylen for Dame" question might be the hardest question the Celtics FO has faced since the Nets trade. Not trading Jaylen or Jayson for rentals in the past were easy decisions. Trading for Kyrie knowing it won't cost Jaylen or Jayson was an easy decision. Not trading Jaylen for Harden (who had two years left) was probably a fairly difficult decision but trading 3 years of Jaylen for 4 years of Dame might be the hardest questions/decisions in recent team-building decisions for the Celtics.

There was an argument on why not to trade for Kawhi. Or AD. Or Harden.

There literally is not one valid argument for not wanting to trade JB for Dame. Its just people not wanting to trade their binkie.
