Year-end awards (2022)

Post#1 » by Fencer reregistered » Mon Apr 11, 2022 6:50 pm

I think we should have a mega-thread for year-end award discussions, whether or not the mods deem it appropriate to merge in the existing one on DPoY and the All-Defense teams.

Anyhow, the CBS guys have published their opinions. Celtics angles include:

-- Booker commonly over Tatum for top-5 MVP.
-- Smart with a lot of support for DPotY, followed by Bam. Little support for Gobert.
-- No MIP or 6MotY support for any Celtic.
-- Little CotY support for Ime. Overwhelming support for the top 2 Western Conference teams' coaches, followed by a fair amount for Miami's.
-- Lots of support for Brad as EotY.

CBS also did an article on award teams.

They made the obvious choices for All-NBA First Team, including Tatum. On second team they put all of Steph, LeBron and KD. Given that, the rest of the choices aren't too surprising. (CP3 and Siakam are the two 3rd-team choices that could conceivably have gone differently, but nobody jumps out at me as having been robbed.)

Their all-defensive team selections, however, were a little weird. Overall they had 6 bigs, 2 SFs (Bridges/Thybulle), and 2 guards (Smart/Jrue). Timelord was on the second team. So was Giannis.

I'm expecting the C's to finish top 3-5 in several individual award categories but not actually win them.

Tatum has been #4 on the NBA.com MVP Ladder but he's not going to win. Ime will prob finish around 3rd for COY. Smart and Rob will get a lot of votes for DPOY but probably not win (although I'd love it if one of them did.) Brad will get votes for Executive but not win. Etc.

But JT has a chance at 1st team All NBA. I have him 1st team but I'm kinda expecting to be annoyed when he's 2nd team. And maybe JB sneaks on to the 3rd team but there's a lot of competition.

Smart and Rob will def be on All Defense, whether it be 1st or 2nd team.

My prediction.

Tatum first team, and 5th in MVP.
Smart DPOY.
Rob 2nd all team defense.
Brad 2nd in executive of the year.
Ime 3rd in coach of the year.
Celtics 1st in our hearts.

If your team is not a top 20 team you should be disqualified from all nba teams. I generally wouldn't want to punish a player for the work of the GM but in this case the player (LeBron) is the GM so I'm fine with it.

I would remove LeBron from the all nba teams and add either Bam or Middleton.

Not for nothing but many act like Jaylen will never make all nba. He's already owned Siakim in the playoffs and I'll take him over Trae 100 times out of 100 because defense matters. He's closer than many give him credit for.

had we held onto the #1 seed I think we would've gotten a golden shower of awards (CoY, Tatum 1st team and top 3 MVP, DPoY etc.) but it was a brief moment of flying too close to the sun for Rob's meniscus to handle, so honestly:

I'll be psyched if Marcus wins DPOY.
That would honestly make the whole team and whole city proud.
**** everything else. Give Marcus his trophy and get the **** out of this team's way.

I agree.

And if it doesn't happen that way, it will be close. Inclusion on the 15 Greatest Coaches list may help Spoelstra in this year's CotY rankings. Attention to the excellence of other Celtics players might help Booker vs. Tatum among MVP also-rans. Etc.

Rob should be eligible at forward. Indeed, that's the position at which he starts the game on defense, in reality. But I didn't know he was.

Given that he is, I think his chances of making a team are excellent. Gobert, Bam, Giannis are probably ahead of him in the voting among bigs. Bridges probably is too at SF. (Edit: Bridges is also eligible at guard, and I bet that's where he will be selected.)

That leaves Rob contending with JJJ, Draymond, Embiid, Thybulle, etc. for what should be at least 2 spots, and he has a better narrative than most.

Not sure of validity of this but if true, as expected, Jokic looking to win MVP B2B.

I want Tatum (1st or 2nd team), Rob (2nd team All-D), and Smart (DPOY and 1st team All-D) to win. Ime, Brad, and others will garner votes but not enough to win.

Award or not, I think Horford's impact has been overshadowed and is underrated.

I just hope Smart winning a somewhat narrative driven DPOY doesn't deter voters from giving Rob the much more derseved DPOY awards he will inevitably be deserving of down the line. Would the voters be unwilling to give the award to someone who has a teammate who's won it previously, despite being the best defender on the team?

I sure hope not. Cause Rob is going to be a defensive super star like Rudy.

Best defender on the best defense should be DPOY and first team. And that's Rob.

Not a big problem. There's a narrative that Smart's defense is up and down from year to year. That can be exaggerated if need be. Also, Rob is younger than Smart.

I love how a shooting coach puts forth shooting skills as 'basketball'. Not 'boxing out' or 'taking a charge'...lol

Lots of NBA dudes failing his free throw qualification...!
