Smart garnered the most number of 1st place votes and most overall points.

The last time Cs had multiple All-Defensive team members in the same season was 2011-12 (KG, Rondo).

TD Garden better be louder than usual when they're presented with their award then sustain that throughout the game.

Bam basically exclusively plays C and shouldn't be eligible for Forward votes

Al Horford is not only a former 1rst Team All-Defense, but also a former 1rst Team All-NBA (voted one of the 5 best players in the League, albeit a while ago, which Tatum has yet to achieve in the eyes of fellow players and the Media). So, Al's gotten a lotta luv from the League and Media in the past. And he's upped his game the most of any Celtic in the playoffs. Factoring in defense, he's been the Celtics 2nd best player thru 13 playoff games. Although Smart just blew the roof off in Game 2 Against the Heat, when Smart played like a 1rst Team All-NBAer (Tatum did as well). And that ain't easy to do against a good defensive team like the Heat. The Heat really pressure the ball and the passing lanes.

Smart's been on everyone's radar for years. I'm really happy that Rob Williams III was recognized. Tatum is an underrated defender but he's just 24. He may make All-Defense yet, but it's hard when there are two guys on your team already hogging votes. However, it's certainly possible, the 70's Celtics had four players on All-Defense (John Havlicek 1969-1976; Dave Cowens 1975, 1976, 1980; Paul Silas 1971-73, 1975,1976; 6'5" SG Don Chaney 1972-75, 1977)

6 different Celtics got votes. (Starters plus White; Grant did not.)

I was surprised Al only got 1 vote. Likely the same person who gave him his one vote for DPOY.

League-wide, 6 guys were on >90% of the ballots: The first team plus Bam, who was only 1 point behind JJJ but go more first-place votes.

Timelord was a clear 9th overall, and 5th among bigs.

As expected, the teams overall featured 6 bigs, 2 SFs listed as guards, and 2 true guards.

Thybulle has made all defensive team coming off the bench.

But it is rare and much harder for a bench player to get it.

Also Thybulle stands out more on defense cause there's so many players on the sixers who are not very good defenders.

Harder for Grant to get votes when he's on a team loaded with other standout defensive guys..

Also, while he has definitely stepped his defense up in the playoffs, during reg season he was kind of inconsistent - had games where he was awesome but also had times where bigger guys would score easily on him inside and times where small/quicker guards would beat him easily off the dribble.

Horford should be getting a lot more credit for how this team defends. Smart and Williams no doubt deserve their awards, but Big Al should be getting props too. We give it to him as fans, but I don't think he's getting that outside of the fan base as much as he should.

Yes, well deserved. I wonder if they should have a "Team" award.

Lol who voted for Jaylen Brown.
I guess it's only fair for blind people to be able to vote, too.

And big congrats to Smart and Robert Williams the Third!

Well, he did get a single vote for DPOY. :) Second place IIRC.

Presumably the same person who voted for him for all-Defense. I conjecture that person just voted for the whole Celtics starting lineup.

I would have voted for a non Celtics as DPOY since IMO Smart played better defense in 2016-17 when he didn't even making 2nd team all defense. Not saying Smart didn't play excellent defense this year but these awards all too often are too much based upon reputation and how an overall defense does. How an overall defense does should be looked at but only in context of that players teammates. I'm not opposed to a guard winning DPOY but I think realistically speaking the guard has to be at the Michael Jordan or Gary Payton level and I don't think Smart or any other guard in the NBA this year really came close. Jordan was just insane the year he won it with 3.2 steals and 1.6 blocks per game while also playing great man to man/team defense. I don't begrudge Smart winning it since he was robbed over 5 years ago from making an all defensive team when he deserved it IMO over former Celtic Tony Allen playing less minutes form Memphis.

In terms of defensive value this year for regular season, I would have gone like this in assessing the 5 best defenders on the Celtics.
1) Horford
2) Smart
3) Tatum -- case can be made for him even higher because of minutes/games played.
4) Robert Williams -- played only 61 games
5) Derrick White -- gotta give him credit for games played in SA as well.
