From an outside perspective, I often associate American food to burgers or steak.

Technically the right answer.

I voted for the hotdog, hotdogs are fairly prevalent in American culture, and I feel like they tend to be more specific to American culture than other options.

Culturally beef for sure. Realistically chicken in terms of pure volume.

From another outsiders view, it has to be burgers or hot dogs.

Don't shoot me, but half of the options are Italian or Mexican. Plus a Chinese one.

I forget most things from heavy drinking nights in my youth but I remember a group decided it was baked beans one night. You’re all welcome.

Native Americans were first, everyone that came to the US after were all from other countries. Therefore, we have a great blend of many amazing dishes from many great cultures. So to say hamburgers and hotdogs is kind of insulting.

There's a logic to that, but when I read the question before looking at the enumerated choices, "hamburger" immediately popped into my said, so that's what I went with.

You can say America has the greatest food, which it does for the reason you gave -- in what other country can you walk down a street and be able to indulge in cuisines from a dozen different countries/ethnic groups? -- and also acknowledge that a McDonald's hamburger is just about as American as anything there is. It's not insulting, it's reality.

I was going to choose "Apple Pie". But the "Hamburger/Cheeseburger..." option, just jumped out at me.
Speaking as an American (1/4th Native). That's gotta be it!

America is a melting pot. So, American food mostly comes from other countries.
Hamburgers - Hamburg Germany - But I think the Bacon Cheese Burger is an America invention.
Hot Dogs (frankfurters ) - Frankfurter Germany.
Fish Tacos I believe are an American twist on a Mexican dish.
American Chop Suey is an American invention.
