Celtic Rebounding thru 10 Games
Don't be Fooled. This could be a problem against the BEST TEAMS (Phili, Denver, Minnesota, even Milwaukee) down the line.
8.9 Jayson Tatum 36.2 mpg
7.3 Jrue Holiday 34 mpg
6.2 Kristaps Porzingis STARTING CENTER 30 mpg
6.0 Al Horford 24 mpg
5.2 Jaylen Brown 33.7 mpg
3.8 Derrick White 30 mpg
3.4 Payton Pritchard 20.5 mpg
3.3 Sam Hauser 19.5 mpg
3.3 Luke Kornet 10.6 mpg
Celtics Team Average is 48.2 rpg but they seem to rely on Gang rebounding rather than a dominant Rebounder. I've always had a liking for players who rebound.

Re: Celtic Rebounding thru 10 Games
Celtics currently 4th in the league in defensive rebounding % behind the Magic, Knicks and Kings.
Also on the defensive side of the ball, Celtics very good again at not fouling.
I do think that Tatum has really focused on the boards this year and that that probably does take some more of his total (albeit very large) bandwidth of what he accomplishes on the court.

Tatum's also bigger and stronger than he was.
The Celtics have played the hardest schedule in the league to date, and against some good rebounding teams. They rebounded evenly with the Knicks twice, and with Minnesota. Only the Sixers seriously outrebounded them. That is something to watch for in tomorrow's game.

Is it really essential to have one person grab all the rebounds rather than have several people grab their shares of them?

Only stat that really matters is this one. we're 2nd in the league right now in rebounds per 100 possessions.
1st in the league? The Knicks, which is why there were times in last night's game where our rebounding looked suspect.

Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

Also because C's aren't really the second best rebounding team in the league. They show up there that way because they are very good defensively at forcing tough shots (and therefore misses) so there are more defensive rebounds to collect.
It's splitting hairs but imo if you want pure rebounding performance rb% is better for that and other reasons.

As opposed to blocking out?

To the eye test, Tatum has been an outstanding defensive rebounder for a while.
He also hasn't played with an elite defensive rebounding big much that I can recall. Rob and Enes were great offensive rebounders, but merely solid on the defensive glass. And Grant of course contributes to rebounding only via blocking out.

Hah Hah. There was a time a few years ago that I started to think only us Old Timers had been taught to block out (definately 8th grade, maybe even 7th grade). It's a lost art to a lot of the younger players in the NBA.

I swear I read “rebuilding” and thought this is an all-time low for negativity on this board.

Perhaps it's time for Lasik Surgery or a new Eyeglass Lens Prescription.

No, it’s definitely not. But I think the implication/worry/fear is that if you rely on gang rebounding vs individual prowess at it, there will be certain matchups where the other team has a guy or guys who can just overpower you there. So it’s a potential flaw weakness that could show up at times.

The teams you identify as the BEST TEAMS aren't really that good at offensive rebounding, by the way. Philly was 26th last season in ORb%. Denver was middle of the pack. The Bucks were good but still only 9th in the league.
This season, Philly is 9th, the Bucks are 26th, and Denver is again middle of the pack. The Wolves, with their twin towers available, are no longer near the bottom but still only 20th.

Well we have done good to really good against teams that have players with outsized rebounding reputation. We played Bam, Embiid, Gobert, Towns, and Mitchell Robinson, and kept them to below their season average for Orb% except in the first Knicks game.

I was actually quiet happy with our rebounding this season? Not a go to guy but I doubt that's the direction the NBA is heading towards.

Re: Celtic Rebounding thru 10 Games
We were the nr 1 defensive rebounding team last too with only 35 games of rob. Idk why folks are surprised we’re good at this.

An alternative perspective:
The Celtics have actually been a really good defensive rebounding team for awhile now, and because the team is so big, offensive rebounding will be decent too.

Re: Celtic Rebounding thru 10 Games
Having a dominant individual rebounder doesn't guarantee having a great rebounding team.
Top 5 individual rebounders (per REB%, min 5 games, min 30 mpg) and their team's rebounding rank:
1. Jokic - 12th
2. Ayton - 18th
3. Gobert - 13th
4. Sabonis - 17th
5. Embiid - 3rd
Against the Cs, we're going to pull those guys away from the paint anyway. Celtics are 4th as a team with Tatum currently 15th (Porzingis 40th) on the list above.
And whichever name we can come up with who's a "dominant rebounder" (Drummond? Boogie? Dwight? Whiteside?) has to be good at the other things too so they can see the floor. Otherwise, it would be plugging a small hole to create a bigger one.

Re: Celtic Rebounding thru 10 Games
The last time we sucked at defensive rebounding was 21-22 with double bigs under Ime and that was mostly a result of our switch 1-5 scheme since it out the bigs out on the perimeter often. Last year and this season we’re doing far more switching 1-4 and just doing a better job of boxing out with our bigs.
