Celtics’ Jaylen Brown calls for investigation after controversial loss to PacersBy STEVE HEWITT | Boston Herald | January 8, 2024 at 11:48 p.m.
https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/01/08/celtics-jaylen-brown-calls-for-investigation-after-controversial-loss-to-pacers/Jaylen Brown did not hold back in his comments after the Celtics’ 133-131 loss to the Pacers on Monday night as he called for the league to investigate a controversial play in the final seconds that he felt cost the C’s the game.
With the game tied at 131 in the final moments, Brown pulled up for a potential go-ahead shot and was initially fouled by Buddy Hield. But the Pacers challenged the call, and it was surprisingly overturned even though it appeared Hield made contact with Brown’s head. Official James Williams explained that Hield hit the ball, leading to the overturn decision.
The Pacers regained possession and won the game after Kristaps Porzingis fouled Bennedict Mathurin on a 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds and Mathurin made two of three free throws. Brown was left fuming and ranted about the controversial call after the game.
“I think he obviously hit me in the head,” Brown told reporters in Indiana. “I think we definitely need to do some investigation, that’s all I’m going to say. I think that was an obvious one. Like I’ve never heard of (the) head (is) part of the ball. It doesn’t make any sense to me. And I asked him. I went up and asked … like did I get hit in the head? He looks me straight in the face, James, and he says, ‘No, you didn’t get hit in the head.’ And I’m like, ‘OK.’ Then you come down and make… on the other end. Like that cost our team the game, and you expect us not to be frustrated, you know what I mean? We’re trying to build great habits. We’re trying to win as many games as possible, and we just dropped one because of that.
“So, I feel like we got the right to be upset and the league should understand. Of course we’re going to say something about it after the game, so I don’t think there should be any fines. But I definitely think that one should be investigated.”
Brown said after the call was made, he went to Williams to confirm the official didn’t think he got hit in the head. He wasn’t pleased with his response.
“I asked him, did I get hit in the head?” Brown said. “Because that was the one question I wanted to make sure that we both… and he said, no. And I asked him again, are you sure? And he said yes. That’s what pissed me off. Because I know I got hit in the head. And then you see the replay, it’s pretty obvious that I got hit in the head, and then you look me in my eye and tell me that I didn’t? I think that needs to be investigated. It cost my team a game and of course I’m pissed about it.”
The league will issue a Last 2-Minute Report from Monday night’s game late on Tuesday afternoon which will reveal what the correct call should have been. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said that Hield told him that he did foul Brown.
“I can’t wait for 4 o’clock tomorrow,” Mazzulla told reporters, referring to when the Last 2-Minute Report will be released.

It’s time to call in the special investigator, also known as my doppleganger.

If I'm Buddy Hield, and my goal is to make Joe Mazzulla and the Celtics as upset as possible, I tell him I fouled Jaylen even if I didn't.

Good point lol. He did 100% hit him in the head though.

This 100% should be investigated but it won't. Adam Silva doesn't want to question the "integrity" of the game, but he has officials making terrible calls at the end of games that affect the outcome. They had a video replay and still **** up the call. The NBA will sweep this under the rug and act like nothing happened per usual.

Celtics will get a sweet whistle tomorrow night, 10000% guaransheed.
What’s an investigation going to do? They blew the call, which happens on a pretty consistent basis.

I want some accountability. James Williams saw the replay and still **** up the call. He told Brown he didn't get hit in the head.
What replay was he watching where Brown didn't get hit in the head? They added challenges to make sure these calls were right, and they still messed them up. If I'm a casual viewer at home, and I can see he got hit in the head, why is an NBA official or someone in New York not able to see what I'm seeing?
I guess I just want James Williams to come out and say sorry, I **** up the call my bad lol.

I’m still waiting for an apology from the NFL about giving the Chiefs a game against the Pats in Brady’s last season here. Especially because they apologized to the cowboys literally the week before lol.
I think even if just because refs are human and reactionary, Celtics probably get an awesome whistle tomorrow night,

What's annoying is this controversy is preventing the players from reflecting on the actual reasons they lost, giving up a 40 point quarter and 2 additional 30 point quarters.

Oh, being a fellow ref high school level, I get the refs are human, but the fact he still got the call wrong with instant replay is laughable.
The one-time N'Keal Harry does something...

L2M report will come out in a few hours and say the contact was incidental and the overturn was correct and that will be the end of it. They better move on from this, it is what it is

What are the actual details here? Obviously hit his head but did he hit the ball first or not? And does that excuse the head contact or no?

So is the one ref make the ultimate decision maker?
There are two other refs, shouldn't one of them gave said that is a foul? Regardless the ref is clearly a pacers fan and should never ref one of their games again.

Watching the replay, I think it was a ticky-tack foul and I would have been okay if it wasn’t called. That said, there is no way they should have overturned the call because he clearly grazed his head before hitting the ball.

It wasnt ticky tack.
that was a hit to the head. No room for gray space there.

Well look on the bright side, the refs only called it a turnover for Brown. If the same exact situation happened with Tatum instead of Brown the refs would have probably call Tatum for an offensive foul. Tatum pushing off with his head

The officials involved should all be canned, really, at least whichever one(s) were responsible for that.
Should be an investigation in addition.
Honestly, if that stuff doesn't happen, we should take drastic measures in whatever manner we can practically do so.
